Recommended: Recent issues in street gangs

The Bandidos motorcycle gang has had a decades-long stranglehold on supremacy in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This gang has becoming an increased threat not only to Albuquerque, but the nation. Here in the five years I have lived here, there have been many issues with the Bandidos. Shootouts have occurred because other motorcycle gangs like the Vagos are threatening their turf. One member got shot like two years ago and the city was chaos because of threats and biker gangs came from all over for revenge. Could not really find out how one can be recruited into the Bandidos. Stealing bikes is a very well-known criminal activity they commit. Transporting and distribution of illicit drugs is primary source of income (Proctor, 2013). They do a majority …show more content…

They are a national gang. Of course, the gang is not as big here as where it originated in California. However, it is considered to be one of the largest gangs in the United States. That I do remember from gang class. Also, to be accepted into the gang, one must take a beating from members. This gang is known for violence and they do not hesitate to use extreme actions when protecting their turf against rivals or the police. They are big with the selling and distribution of crack cocaine, PCP along with other drugs. Other activities would be armed robberies, auto theft, assault and murder (Cruz, 2015).
Gang activity has increased greatly. New Mexico does not have enhanced drug laws so many gangs have moved to Albuquerque, there is now about three hundred in and around the area. The drug distribution of illicit drugs is main source of income for the gangs in New Mexico. Now, that competition has intensified gang rivalries, which these violent confrontations affect public safety.

The reason for this program is to use innovative approaches in developing programs, which will teach youth alternatives to violence, substance abuse, anger issues, low self-esteem, and the consequences as a result of making bad choices. During, the program non-violence, team building, leadership development and communication skills is promoted. A neutral and positive setting is provided for young people, so they are able to come together from different gangs throughout the city to work on their issues and programs together. When a youth is referred to the program they have an Intake-Assessment with the family. “Together, a Program Contract/Service Plan will be developed based on the individual needs of the youth/family. If the youth is on probation/parole all requirements of the courts will be incorporated into their contract.     Our team presentation focused on three Latino gangs, MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha), the Mexican Mafia and the Los Surenos gang. My part of the presentation was to provide information on the type of crime these three gangs are known to commit. A high-risk youth is defined as a male or female between the ages of 12-17 years old who has had some contact with the law or is at risk of becoming an offender. There is a lack of motivation in some high-risk youth to positively change their lives around. According to Stinson (2009), risk factors associated with juvenile delinquency include “poor academic performance, early childhood aggression, and hyperactivity; lack of parental involvement/interaction and inadequate parental supervision and monitoring; and community/environmental factors, including access to drugs and weapons, and lack of access to community resources due to poverty” (p. 11). At risk youth that engage in community based programs in Ridge Meadows, B.C. such as KidStart, Connex, Yardworks, Community Work Service, sports and leisure and counseling, are more successful later on in their young adulthood versus high risk youth who do not attend such programs. The KidStart program is a mentoring and one-on-one program that works with youth who are at-risk and experiencing difficulties in their lives. Although, school-based programs as well as community-based prevention programs may reduce gang violence, effective parenting stops gang involvement early on from childhood to adolescence.
