What do you think of when you hear and or say “gunpowder”? Well, you might say to make bullets heat or burst, but did you know it was a mistake when the chinese discovered it. “Gunpowder” was used to trade for different kinds of supplies. There has been numerous items,inventions, and ideas that have been traded along The Silk Road that affect our life today such as gunpowder,paper,and the compass. Gunpowder has several low explosive powders in it and the main powder is gunsand. Gunsand is used for when the guns bullet shoots out it’s to give it an extra boost.
The first gunpowder was black powder which is mainly saltpetre. Black powder is thought to be discovered in china. Without gunpowder we wouldn’t be able to protect our country or protect
ourselves. The gunpowder that the chinese made has been around for a long time. Some people in America make gunpowder for their own hands. The Chinese had also invented the compass the compass first started out with some water in the bowl but then the liquid made dry-card compasses absolute by the end of the 19th century. Some early compasses didn’t have water in the bowl.Compasses are attracted to the magnetic poles of Earth. The so called knight compass was widely used. During the 15th century people began to understand the compass needles. The compass needles did not point directly at the north pole.The compass was discovered in 206B.C and was used for sailor to find their way home. Paper was also invented during the time 206B.C. The United States has papermaking machines, but do you ever think about who made it first? Well here you go paper has a big history behind it. The paper was made by the ancient chinese. Although the United States makes paper they got the idea from the chinese trade route which is the Silk Road. The SIlk Road is a bunch of trade routes connected. Paper has affected our daily lives because if we didn’t have paper we would be doing everything on a computer and not learn anything except for typing. We have a lot of history behind our lives but have you ever stopped and thought of how we would feel and what we would do without our history? What if we didn’t even have history we wouldn’t be in school we wouldn’t learn anything. We wouldn’t have houses,doctors,nurses,ANYTHING without school. We would be watching videos and not even studying or doing homework would be a struggle.
The gas mask, ever wondered who invented it? If not, then what about the traffic light? Well, Garrett A Morgan invented both of them. You may not have heard of him simply because Morgan been buried under and never spoken of simply because Morgan was a minority back when racism and sexism were extremely common. So they basically never talked about him inventing anything, and now not many people know about him. Both of his inventions are one of the greatest inventions to date.
During the late 1800’s, there was a time of great change. This was near the end of the industrial revolution in America. Some of the greatest inventions were invented during this time. We still use most of the inventions today, they are just modified to fit the needs of America today. 3 of the major inventions and innovations that came out of this time were the telephone, typewriter, and the incandescent light bulb.
A popular weapon used by both sides was the rifle. Rifles were invented before the Civil War and were greatly used in the War of 1812. However, more types were built and a larger amount was used during the Civil War. Rifles added a spin to bullets for a greater accuracy at longer ranges. Using this weapon, soldiers could fire 400 yards away, as opposed to the average 80 yards (Robertson 50). Rifles were the fastest and hardest weapon of the time. Rifles allowed their bullets to be shot harder and faster towards its target. New inventions, used by the Union more than the Confederate, included Parrott rifles. They were composed of iron. Robert Parker Parrott, an American soldier and inventor, created these weapons, hence the name Parrott rifles. Despite its name, the Parrott rifle was actually a cannon. Its size ranged from 10 to 300 pounders. It was not favored by most because it was considered unsafe (“Civil War Artillery”). Wars have been around for centuries. A typical battle was fought on land. The infantry would line up and fire at the advancing enemy. World War I was first called "the Great War" because of the number of lives lost (Coetzee 11). There were approximately nine million deaths over the course of the four years the war lasted (11). World War I began because of the assassination of "Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne" (17). Tensions were high and war seemed the only solution (17). The alliances in Europe were well formed by the time 1914 arrived (17). "The Central Powers" were "Germany and Austria-Hungary" (Westwell 8). "The Triple Entente" were "Britain, France, and Russia" (8). All of the countries and citizens believed in the cause of the war from the very beginning (9). That enthusiasm would quickly change once the introduction of new weapons and strategies were revealed (9). Every country involved was seeking ways to improve on the resources they needed to fight, and hopefully win the war. None of the countries involved wanted the other side to have a military advantage over the other (7). World War I had technological inventions such as machine guns, poison gas, tanks and submarines, which changed the strategy of war. The outcome of these inventions resulted in more death and destruction than previous wars.
In all battles of the movie there are a few objects displayed incorrectly. The cannon is a piece of artillery that uses gunpowder or other propellants to launch a given projectile. The cannon was first used in China but was then incorporated in standard military by the Revolutionary War. The cannon’s effectiveness in battle led to its constant use in battle. The weaponry in all of the battles shown in the movie included the cannon; however in the movie most projectiles exploded at impact. By that time of the war exploding projectiles have not yet been invented; cannons at the time were used to mow through the ranks of the opponent. Due to this, it is impossible for those projectiles shot from the cannon to have exploded at impact. One other inaccuracy was that, in The Patriot, the continental soldiers were seen carrying the “Betsy Ross” flag into battle. In reality there was no standard-issue flag for the men to carry so flags with slogans and symbols relating to a region were carried instead....
This was the self contained brass cartridge. It contained an ignition source called a primer, an amount of powder and a bullet. Early cartridge guns were converted percussion rifles. The first repeating rifles were the Henry and Spencer, the Henry had a fifteen shot internal magazine and the Spencer a seven round removable magazine this meant multiple could be carried. Repeaters were not limited to rifles though handguns such as the famous Colt Single Action Army were a common favorite among both civilians and military personnel. The industrial revolution boosted the firearms industry. It allowed gunsmiths who formerly would cut rifling and make parts by hand using saws and files to now use vertical mills and lathes to improve both output and precision. Barrels became easier to rifle and take to size using lathes and mills allowed sights to be manufactured much easier. The next major evolutionary step in the firearms industry was the bolt action rifle. A bolt action provides a tighter seal at the breach than other actions allowing higher pressure cartridges and a farther effective range do to increased velocity The first bolt action used by the U.S. military was the Krag-Jorgensen a Norwegian rifle with a internal side loading magazine. War has been a recurring part of America’s history for the past hundreds of years. From the 1700s to the present, America has gotten into numerous situations and turmoil, which eventually lead to the wars we currently study and know about today. Technological advancements in warfare were necessary and a great obligation during times of war. This was pursued with drastic improvement. From the transformation of the use of smoothbore muskets during the Civil War to the industrial revolution leading to weaponry innovations post civil war, the nature of warfare dramatically changed. These developments proved to be proficient in battle. In the midst of these hundreds of years, while many technological advances demonstrated to be efficient in battle, the machine gun was one of the most significant advancements in technology that changed the face of warfare through its transformation of operations and strategy.
2:Another reason why gunpowder revolutionized Europe was the transition from medieval artillery to modern artillery that contained gunpowder. After the powder was spread along the Silk Road in the 13th century, it landed in the hands of Europeans seeking a more prominent way of using the powder. Before gunpowder, medieval artillery was based of heavy swords, iron armor, axes, knives, and arrows. These items were the basis of medieval artillery and only men who have trained for many years could obtain these weapons. The weapons were used for another 500 years before gunpowder was introduced, and some of the items started to involve the technology of the powder. One of the most important aspects behind a gun is the gun powder. Gun powder is an explosive powder that when ignited sets off a violent reaction. The discovery of gun powder or black powder is very ironic, the Chinese in the early 12th century were trying to make a potion for immortality and they discovered what would be one of the most deaths inductive creations known to man. Gun powder is very simple creation only three ingredients sulfur, potassium nitrate, and charcoal when ground and mixed these make gun powder. The original uses for this were in rockets to scare the invading army’s around the wall of china. Without this substance the world would be very different than it is today, war could possibly be fought with swords and bows rather than machine guns and sniper rifles.
The Industrial Revolution did not start simultaneously around the world, but began in the most highly civilized and educated country in Western Europe – England. An empire like Great Britain was able to prevent the flow of new technology and experienced technicians to its colonies even while new machinery, like the spinning shuttle and the spinning jenny, was being used to develop textile manufacturing at home in England. The British Parliament was able to control its territories through laws and other restrictions. However, Britain’s futile attempts to block the development of new technologies in the American colonies led directly to the rise of the textile industry and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the United States. From the first Navigation Act in 1651 to the “Intolerable Acts” and Trade Acts, the British Parliament attempted to dominate the world’s textile industry by passing increasingly strict taxes and acts designed to prevent the establishment of textile manufacturing in the American colonies. Concurrently, American textile companies began to offer rewards and bounties to mill workers who would emigrate from England bringing their knowledge of textile technology (World of Invention). At the same time, English-born, textile mill-trained, Samuel Slater illegally emigrated to the new country of America with secrets and memories of English textile technology. Within a year, Slater had established the first spinning mill in America, thus beginning the American Industrial Revolution.
The National Football League (NFL) averages 290 million television viewers a week, four times the population of the United Kingdom. Football has become a massive part of society, whether it is at home watching the game on television or playing football in school. It is a worldwide culture that keeps people active, entertained, and socially occupied, all while creating multiple jobs.
The first guns used in America were a simple machine where the person did most of the work. The user measured and put the powder down the barrel of the gun. Next some shotgun pellets were put in the same way. This was then all compacted and the gun was ready to fire. This reloading took over a minute before each shot could be fired and the guns weren't very accurate by today's standards. If too much powder was used then the gun could explode or if the powder were wet then the gun wouldn't fire. One of inventions during the Revolutionary War was a way to reload faster. The powder was already pre-measured and kept in little sacks. This made reloading faster because the user no longer had to measure the powder between each reloading. These guns were crude but in that day was a powerful modern invention that was considered very useful. The American Revolution was a political war to obtain what the people of that era wanted. By today's standards the destruction of gun was minimal so war was used to obtain political objectives.
The Theme of our Almanac is Science and Technology so my Historical Analysis will be based off of the Science and Technology of the Industrial Revolution. My historical analysis will be about the inventions during the Industrial Revolution. The three I will be focusing on: The Water Frame, The Improved Steam Engine and the Sewing Machine. All three of those inventions all offer some sort of Problem, Progress and Promise to the Industrial Revolution. I will be analyzing those three things.
“Volley Guns” (Chivers, 2010, p.26) or also known as “Organ Guns” (Ellis, 1975, p.10) were first attempts at increasing firepower by adding several barrels at the firing itself, rather than simply attempting to increase the rate of fire. “Gunsmiths had long ago learned to place barrels side by side on frames to create firearms capable of discharging projectiles in rapid succession. These unwieldy devices, or volley guns, were capable in theory of blasting a hole in a line of advancing soldiers” (Chivers, 2010, p.26). An example of such weapons can be seen on July 28, 1835 when Giuseppe Fieshi unleashed terror on King Louis-Phillipe in Paris, France. He fired his 25 barrel “volley gun”, killing 18 of the king's entourage and grazing the King's skull. The weapon was ineffective however. Four of the barrels failed and another four ruptured. Two other barrels had exploded inside, grievously wounding Giuseppe. (Chivers, 2010, p. 27)
The Invention of The Automobile The first automobile was invented in Europe, however the automobile industry had an enormous favorable impact on the United States economy. Brown & Co. 329) There was not one specific person who "invented the automobile," but, there were many people who contributed to the invention of the automobile. (Ingrassia, 5) (Boyne, 31) These people include Isaac Newton, who developed a power carriage in the fourteen twenties, and Joseph Cugnot, who built the first steam powered automobile in seventeen sixty nine.
