But still there are situations where non-western countries listen and buy western music without understanding the English language only because the music is popular mainstream. The idea behind becoming a leader is having a wide market for both local and international music. The US – which has the largest market globally – listens to both local and global music. In fact some of the highest selling music records since the 20th century are not from American but international bands and artists such as the Beatles, Adele, and the Rolling Stones (Olsen, 2004). But the argument remains that it is difficult for musicians who sing in English to break through in multilingual countries. Taylor (2015) the “international music industry’s conservatism and xenophobia make success even more difficult” (p. 97). This lessens the chances the chances of growth in the market. Thirdly, while China has an affinity for live music with 57% of fans attending concerts compared to US’s 51%, it mostly the affluent who attend the concerts compared to the low income households (Savage, 2016). On record, 72% of the Chinese population listen to music per week although it trails behind the US where 91% of the population listens to music weekly and the UK where 85.5% of the population listens to music (Savage, 2016). Although China’s percentage on concert attendance is high compared to other countries, the bottom-line is that it does not reflect the whole society but rather a small portion. The high figures can be partly attributed to China’s approximately 1.3 billion inhabitants, but who showcase high levels of income disparity (McGregor, 2011). The high disparity between affluent consumers and those from lower income households is restrictive in terms o... ... middle of paper ... ...ial media. This is despite the fact that 22% of the Chinese population have access to 3G and about 500 million people use the web (Richard, 2013). If the vast of the population are unaware of various channels of buying music legally, the they are likely to turn to illegal piracy and downloading. This is in contrast to other music distributing companies in other leading markets such as U.S Music Corporation from the US and RSK Music distributors from the UK who are promoting both artists and their music globally using different platforms both online and offline. Furthermore, some Chinese music distributors focus more on western music and live acts. For instance, Musicdish – which is also a leading Chinese music distributor - recently launched the ‘Musicdish song blast’ to market to promote western recorded music and concert shows in mainland China (Chong, 2016).
Because of this, though, the globalization of a song can be seen as detractor to the value of the song 's original use or purpose as there is an essential loss of identity for the song when it is utilized for purposes that stand in contrast to the personal value that it originally possessed. This article is essential in understanding global pop music and the relationship that it has with various forms of music because of the introduction of this discussion that it poses. Feld illustrates many of the reasons behind this development and the causes as to why this phenomenon
American Exceptionlism is basically the idea that we are different then other countries in the world. Which I believe is false because the U.S has these rules but there not really writing down rules there just like norms that American should have. There are certain attributes that a American should have there are things you should know as a American. Now what am I talking about it could be many things such as knowing who the president is in the big chair in D.C or having a huge truck that can drive up heels. Having the U.S flag out on Memorial Day. So many things can be things that make American. What I want to solely focus on is the idea that country music is what it is to be an American and accepted in the U.S.
Music is one of the most powerful and influential language which to many people in
In this day and age, pop music dominates the airwaves at every turn. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, and many are commonplace names among teenagers and younger demographics not only in the United States, but all around the world. The United States has accepted the position of international, cultural role model long ago, dating back to the 1950’s when rock and roll caught fire as a hybrid of blues, country, and jazz and spread to the rest of the world almost infectiously. Since then, every major artist that comes out of the United States has easily become a global icon, regardless of the language or nationality of their adoring fans. However, one could conceive that this glamorized version of music comes less from the soul of the artist and is merely born of fiscal ambitions and visions of grandeur. The point made previously is not to critique any pop icon’s talent, which clearly they have proved to possess an abundance of it to keep the public swooning at their every whim, but instead, to show that there are musicians out there producing beautiful music without the threat of corruption and adherence to mainstream culture.

World music may sound as simple as its name suggests, however the world music phenomenon expresses a deeper story that many people seem to miss. There is so much that makes up a world music genre, but what we hear about it is not always the easiest to decipher and generally comes from powerful and large organisations, where not all of it is explained thoroughly. A lot of their understanding comes from what they are only interested in and most important stories and factors are either ignored or incomplete (Stokes 2003, p. 297). Not receiving the full picture, gives us a limited understanding of world music and its sub genres. Different genres of music over the globe have been shaped in many ways by influences such as the; historical and traditional root, people and their culture, migration, globalisation, politics and commodification. Nueva Canción is one example of a world music genre that has been influenced in such ways, and of which has a strong historical and political story worthy to be recognised. This essay will focus on the way the genre, Nueva Canción has become a significant genre of world music, by exploring the influences stated previously.
The music industry’s history is a convoluted mess. There is no real consensus on what the music industry IS and what paths it has taken. Were the Beatles the greatest band to ever exist? Maybe. Is there a hyper objectification of women throughout the “men’s club” that is the music industry? Probably. It’s this hard to define, frankly confusing business that is worth roughly $130 billion dollars today. With it’s flimsy and opaque edges, can the music industry ever be called into question on its wrongdoings? The racist undertone throughout its history may force it to. With the music industry as an ever growing business that seems to change almost every decade, the one thing that has not changed throughout time is an undercurrent of racism that
The most significant down side to technology is the loss in revenue from album sales. Illegal downloading of music has become prevalent in today’s society, and many artists—major or independent—receive little to no profit from album sales. Many companies, such as Apple, have tried combating the issue with protected file formats, but a loophole has always been found to bypass the protection. Unsigned and independently signed artists hurt the most, as they pay almost everything out-of-pocket to produce their music. The only feasible response to the loss in revenue, artists have found, is to increase tour dates. In today’s age, it is not rare to find artists who tour more than eight months out of each year. Touring has become one of, if not the only, reliable source of income for many
Everyone has heard the phrase that America is the “melting pot” of cultures and ethnicities. This means all different traditions, languages, food, and other cultural element, such as music, fuse to produce new ethnic items such as the ones mentioned before. Music, has evolved over the ages in America, and the different genres formed have impacted other genres, like how the African drum rhythms and chants inspired the blues and jazz in America, or how pop and jazz influenced funk and disco. This music combination demonstrated how the two genres that originated in two different ethnic cultures came together to create a novel and energetic music style. Additionally, music holds a long history of bleeding through the lines of nationality, race and ethnicity.
Some may say music is just music; a song is just a song. However, music plays an enormous role in our psychology, because a single song has the ability to bring about many kinds of thoughts and emotions in the listener. Music is subtly one of the main factors in which people identify with certain groups and establish their belonging in society. It shapes people’s perspectives on how the world functions and the roles they play within it. Music can function the same way in a culture; it can reflect many of the culture’s values and ideologies. Music can have many effects on culture and the people’s idea of who they think they are within that culture. Music can serve in a way that promotes cultural identity and pride, yet it could also play a role in the separation of social and economical identities in within cultures.
The music industry impacts the lives of people from around the world. With the implementation of technology, the influence of the music industry has spread to affect anyone with access to technology. Streaming services have contributed to the increased popularity of music. While there are positive effects to being able to stream music and have multiple ways of listening to it, the music industry suffers from the lack of revenue and illegal activity associated with technology. Technology has had both positive and negative effects on the music industry by affecting how people access music and how music is produced

With the music being the highly profitable, capitalist enterprise that it is today, it is no wonder that it is controlled and regulated by a few large conglomerates that exist is today’s world. It is important to make clear that although evidence is being presented of the positive aspects of globalization through music that there is overwhelming evidence that cultural imperialism is more than it seems on the outside. One must keep in mind that cultural imperialism, globalization and the creation of a global village is a business. People are profiting at other people’s loss of cultural identity, they are sold a culture and heritage. With the every growing N’Sync fan clubs and Britney clones, the world is turning into a stage for pop culture and its glamorous unattainable standards.
The music industry started in the mid 18th century with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Through the decades there has been a great increase in this industry; however, the revenues for this industry have declined by half in the last 10 years. This has been caused by music piracy, which “is the copying and distributing of copies of a piece of music for which the composer, recording artist, or copyright-holding record company did not give consent” . After 1980’s, when the Internet was released to public, people started to develop programs and websites in which they could share music, videos, and information with...
