You let the ghetto drag you in, you may join a gang or start to sell drugs. When Strickland met Frank Ross and started doing pottery, he did not let the ghetto get to him. He became a better man, he helped many people that were in need. Playing sports and joining clubs in school helped me focus on what is important in life, like finishing school and graduating. Like Strickland started his pottery, that is how I was with soccer. I did not let people around me influence me because I knew what mattered the most in life. Unlike the people that surrounded Strickland when he was younger, he treated every one he met with respect and he did not care who you were he would try and help you out. As I mentioned before that is how Mr. Delbridge was with me and my fellow classmates. Bill Strickland’s first semester of college was not the easiest, he was surrounded by mostly white students that grew up in balanced neighborhoods. When Strickland first started college he really struggled at first. He did not gain the right skills to obtain a lot of information at once while he was still in high school, because it was not the best school. Strickland tried his best to learn and pay attention by writing everything down, but as some teachers move to fast some of his work looked like scribbles. While Strickland tried to study and go over his notes, it just confused him even more. At this point, he did not …show more content…
I always heard that college would be tough, but I went in to college with a set mind that I was going to finish strong and at the end be successful. I kept my head focused and always made sure to get my work done no matter how hard it was. Improvisational jazz is always changing, it is creating something new and also taking risks without being afraid. I believe that taking risks in life is a good thing and can help you be more successful. Sometimes when you take a risk it does not work out, but that does not mean you should quit or never take a risk again. When I see something that can make me more successful, I go for it. I am not afraid of taking risks. Strickland claims you should never let your goals become your tyrant because it will turn you into a runner and in a predetermined course which the finish line will immovable. I do not believe this is true, he is saying that sometimes you are not able to complete goals. But when you are setting a goal, do not push something that is impossible. If you know you may not be able to finish it, maybe set something more realistic that could be somewhat
Soccer has guided me in many ways to become the person I am. Especially in high school, the sport has showed me how to be much more cooperative and open with others. Before high school, I isolated myself from others and had only a few close friends. Rather than being a sociable, I acted as though I was the only person in the world and had the outlook that as long as I do what is right individually, there is no need for me to work with others. This outlook changed when I joined the soccer team at Holy Spirit, my high school. With the way soccer is at the high school level, I had no choice but to cooperate and associate my selves with others. Once on the field, instead of introducing myself as "me" I had to introduce myself as a part of the team. You win as a team and you lose as a team. Sometimes I wanted to drive to games myself, and I was not allowed to because we are supposed to travel together and it would be wrong to the team for me to separate myself from the group.
Henry Horner Homes, an inner-city housing project, is the setting in which the story of two boys growing up in America’s inner-city occurs. The story tracks the River’s family, particularly the two middle boys, Lafeyette and Pharoah, focusing on the strife-ridden times of drugs, death, gangs, and poverty. The author describes how devastating life in the inner city is for a family, but mainly for the children.
My participation in high school sports have made me into leader as well as helped me gain relationships with friends that will last a lifetime. It has also taught me to rely on the people around me and work together with your team to accomplish your goals. Being a part of a sports team has also influenced my decision making because in order to participate on the team you have to have good behavior, and be a good student
Michael MacDonald’S All Souls is a heart wrenching insider account of growing up in Old Country housing projects located in the south of Boston, also known as Southie to the locals. The memoir takes the reader deep inside the world of Southie through the eyes of MacDonald. MacDonald was one of 11 children to grow up and deal with the many tribulations of Southie, Boston. Southie is characterized by high levels of crime, racism, and violence; all things that fall under the category of social problem. Social problems can be defined as “societal induced conditions that harms any segment of the population. Social problems are also related to acts and conditions that violate the norms and values found in society” (Long). The social problems that are present in Southie are the very reasons why the living conditions are so bad as well as why Southie is considered one of the poorest towns in Boston. Macdonald’s along with his family have to overcome the presence of crime, racism, and violence in order to survive in the town they consider the best place in the world.

In my life, I had not had the chance to be a part of something that influenced me much, until I joined football my freshman year in high school. Joining football was perhaps the most devoted and wisest thing that I did because shortly after joining I began to see changes for the better, and from then I saw the person that I wanted to be in the future. In other words, it shaped the person that I am today and will be for the rest of my life. Not only did the sport influence me but it also equipped me with a new mindset that affects me today in my decision making skills, time management and many other beneficial life virtues. I believe that these virtues will bring me success in the nearest future because I feel confident about myself and I feel more in control in my life through my actions, all thanks to simply joining what seemed to be a “regular” extracurricular.
“The individual who can do something that the world wants done will, in the end, make his way regardless of his race.” These wise words were spoken by Booker T. Washington, who was born a slave and, soon after, was emancipated. At a young age, he started work to help his poor family. Later on, he worked as a teacher and that later led to the founding and building of Tuskegee University. Washington’s heritage taught him to be a hard worker, he worked hard for his education and it paid off in the end when he was able to support his wife and children.
The number one thing that motivates me the most in college is the fact that I recognize this is not the end. I have to work hard to obtain where I want to be at in life. I identify that I did not want to settle with just being a high school graduate and wanted to do something additional with my life.
“In Jazz music, we experience harmonies that we wouldn’t get to experience in other music as much,” says Patrick. “So students are learning how to hear music in different chords. Students are seeing rhythms that they wouldn’t see as much. It helps them build rhythmic vocabulary, it helps them build ear training, the improvisational aspect really helps them more quickly translate their mind and putting it onto their instrument. It absolutely helps you become a better player.”
So far, the college experience has made me a changed person. College changed me into a better person on many occasions. I have learned to be more responsible, when it comes down to getting work done. In college you must be responsible. I have also changed my attitude. Moving from high school to college is a big step; if you don’t change your ways for the better then you might not be successful in college. When you reach college then is the time that you become an adult.
I decided that I wanted to play a sport, I chose volleyball. Most of my friends played the sport so it wasn't hard for me to adjust and make new friends. Becoming a student athlete was a big adjustment for me, I could no longer float through my classes but I need to excel. And that's exactly what I did. For the first time in my high school career I made not only honor roll, but principal’s honor roll. For the first time my mom was proud of my report card, that made me even more proud. From then on I knew I wanted nothing less than what I earned, good grades and a proud family. From my decision to chose to become a student athlete not only make me work harder but, be great at everything I put my mind to. I had motivation to stay successful, to stay eligible. Three years ago if you were to ask me where I thought I would be my senior year, I probably would have told you low level classes barely making it by. Now here I am today excelling in my education preparing to take the next step in my future, college. Even if we don’t understand why we go through them, we have to be willing to let our obstacles become out
Throughout this semester I realized that college is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I developed skills that I believe will help me get through my classes to come. I know I wouldn’t have been able to realize the complexity of college without the help of my Professors. They showed me college isn’t a joke, and that I need to work hard in order to get high grades. This semester was a headache because I was going through the transition from high school to college. I was learning new things and I lacked the traits a college students needs to have in order to do well. I know now that my next semester will defiantly go smoothly, because I now believe I have the traits a college student should contain thanks to my Professors!

When I first enrolled here at State University, I never thought I would ever be in the position to graduate. Finishing college was a huge goal growing up but it was also my biggest fear. But after three and a half years of dedication I plan to get my degree in the fall. Getting this far in college was not easy, it took encouragement from family, dedication, and assistance from others to reach this position.
My first day at college ended up with great satisfaction, I though that going to college would be a great impact in my life . And being part of a class where I would learn so many things, gave me the strength to keep going. It would give the chance to relate with new people and of course, to meet new friends who could last for a life time. And of course, to become more independent. Although, I have to study hard, I feel good because I am doing the best to achieve my goals about finish college. Therefore, to obtain a professional career, with a good projection. Furthermore I also want my family to be proud of me, even though they are not with me. I want to become a successful woman in life , no matter If I have to try a million times I would never stop.
