In conclusion, vampires impact pop culture because they embody human life. Vampires in literature and film show that they compare to human life because over time they have developed. Vampires love and lust after what they want, they aren’t afraid of showing emotion. They aren’t afraid of showing a false image in order to get what they want. Although they were created to be this scary figure, they inspire a lot of things that the pop culture sees as a good and bad thing. Vampires are not always bad, even when people try to shoot them down and say that they are all bad and all the same. It brings us back to the idea of how many people they that not all humans have good or bad intentions. These mythological figures are used to reflect humans
and how we are seen in society. But they are also used to put fear into us. The newer versions of vampires are more human than the older vampires because the older vampires, can be illustrated with a comparison of their speeches. This works because vampires in literature and film attract views because pop culture find the storyline of crime, evil, and horror attractive. Attractiveness has distracted our culture from some normal view of the traditional myths. Pop culture loves vampires because they are in year round movies, tv shows, and books.
At first glance, Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the hour-long TV series which premiered in 1997 and is now in its third season, bears little resemblance to the book which started the vampire craze -- Bram Stoker's Dracula, published a century earlier. And yet, looks can be deceiving. Although the trendy -- and often skimpy -- clothing and bandied about pop-culture references of "Buffy" clearly mark the series as a product of a far different culture than that of the Victorian England of Dracula, the underlying tensions of the two texts are far similar than one might think. Beneath the surface differences in the treatment of their heroines, the two texts converge in similarly problematic anxieties about gender and sexuality.
J. Gordon Melton, in the excerpt “Sexuality and the Vampire” published in his The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead (1998), explains that vampires have a sexual appearance that started from their origin in Dracula. Melton supports his statement by analyzing the monsters' transition to sexual beings through the stories of Dracula’s desires, multiple countries’ erotic tales revolving around vampire-like beings, the manifestation of sensual themes in literary, stage, and screen works, and their current evolution of the once terrified immortals to loved heroes. While the character of Renfield is ostensively extraneous to the central plot of Dracula, he fulfils an important role in Stoker’s exploration of the central themes of the novel. This paper will examine how Renfield character is intertwined with the three central themes of invasion, blood and otherness. Firstly, through Renfield’s inner struggle we learn that he is ‘not his own master’ (Stoker, 211). The theme of invasion is revealed by the controlling and occupying powers of Count Dracula. Secondly, the reoccurring theme ‘the Blood is the Life’ (Stoker, 121), is portrayed throughout the novel and has been interpreted through Stoker’s character Renfield. Then finally, a look at the social construction of the ‘other’ in Dracula and how, through Renfield, who is ‘unlike the normal lunatic’ (Stoker, 52), the Count emerges as the ‘other’ of all ‘others’.
Carmilla is an example of a woman who loves her food far too much. Carmilla is consumed entirely by her food, even sleeping in a coffin of blood: “The limbs were perfectly flexible, the flesh elastic; and the leaden coffin floated with blood, in which to a depth of seven inches, the body lay immersed” (Le Fanu 102). For Carmilla, cruelty and love are inseparable (33). The taking of the victims’ blood for sustenance is a highly sexualized exchange of fluids from one body to another. The act of consumption is transformed into an illicit carnal exchange between the hunter and the hunted.

One effective path to trace this transformation is to compare arguably modern day’s most famous representation of the vampire, Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” with “Dracula”, the foundation from which a large number of modern works draw inspiration. Examining this comparison closely, one finds that a new socially acceptable, sexually abstinent and desirable creature is fast replacing the fearsome and sexually voracious monster, as depicted in early tales of the vampire.

Hi Reilly! You are spot on! I didn't even think about how twilight created this huge supernatural theme within popular culture! I remember being a huge fan of the twilight movies, I was one of those people that was suckered into buying t-shirts with Edward’s face on it and buy every movie soundtrack on itunes. They definitely created a buzz with all of the merchandise. They also created a buzz by asking the audience of they were team Edward or team Jacob, and I think this sort of made people want to read the books and watch the movies, just to see who ended up winning over Bella. Oh by the way, I was team Jacob….. Great
