A simple task when looked at on a different level gives us an idea of how the body and mind works to produce an action and a result. For instance, there are perceptive processes within the vital steps during a jump shot. Shooting a basketball whilst may seem like a trivial task, requires hand-eye co-ordination as well as visual, depth and touch perception. This essay will focus specifically on one fluid motion; the moment the player bends his knees through to when the ball is released from his fingertips.
Perception is how the brain takes in information before it is processed to produce an action. When shooting a basketball, visual perception, touch perception and depth perception all play their part to produce the result: a jump shot.
Visual perception is what aids a human analyze their surrounds, recognize what is around them and is crucial to help the brain make decisions based on what they see. When a basketball player faces the hoop before he shoots the jump shot, he must first identify where the backboard is. Visual perception all starts with visible light. A band of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum is created by electric charges and is radiated as waves, known as Wavelengths. “The energy in this spectrum can be described by its wavelength—the distance between the peaks of the electromagnetic waves“(Goldstein, 2013).
The electromagnetic waves range from extremely short gamma rays, to long radio waves. Within that continuum is visible light which is the only light humans are able to perceive. ...n game. When training a novice, coaches will put more time and effort into focusing on a players fundamental and form before focusing on game plans and more advanced drills and plays. A novice learning the fundamentals of shooting will take a longer amount of time getting form right and learning to adjust their shot and calculating their shot in an instance because their muscle memory hasn’t stored the action. A professional player can adjust and calculate their shot in an instance without any though due to long term memory, each movement is a swift motion, and because their bodies know exactly how to perform an action, it gives their brains time to make proper decisions in game, like how to get around a defender, or how to score a basket. A novice has to concentrate on their fundamentals before they can think about harder and higher level decisions within a game.

These wavelengths are scattered throughout the day and caused by a redirection of the light-waves direction due to gas molecules in the atmosphere (Mc Knight, p. 84). When the sun is setting towards the end of the day there are few blue wavelengths left and we see orange and red which are dominant and the longest wavelengths of visible light to the human eye. At the bottom of the photo (closest to the setting sun) red and orange are the dominant visible colors with the occasional blue and almost violet. The way people perceive things is based on their five senses. The sense of sight was the main sense used in the following experiment, as well as a person’s memory. Eyes tell people what they want to see and want to know. They tell you how to conceive a person and their behaviors as well as their reactions. It essentially judges the world around you. One is able to perceive how a person reacts to certain situations entirely by watching them. Perception applies to the interpretation of what we take in through our senses, in terms of optical illusions. Optical illusions happen because our brains are trying to define what it is that we envision and make sense of the world around us. If perception has no foundation in a person’s experience, a person may literally not perceive it. Perception is a method by which people set up and define their sensory impressions to give significance to their environment. Critical thinking is something we all do, because the regularity may range from person to person.
If you think about it, it’s almost impossible to measure the force that it takes to dribble a basketball, unless you have the right tools. Let’s just think about the basic physics that you should know. In order to dribble a basketball you need to apply enough force for the ball to go from your hand to the floor and back up to your hand. When the ball is in your hand it is holding potential energy. Potential energy is the energy that is about to be transferred into kinetic energy, which is when the energy is in use. The ball is in kinetic energy after it leaves your hand and starts to fall. So the force of gravity has to be less than the force of the bounce to keep the dribbling going.

Although I suffered injuries in my past basketball career which earned me a basketball scholarship to play collegiate basketball, I am now more knowledgeable about my position. This knowledge has helped me reflect on myself and my experiences as a player transitioning to a coach. I believe it is important that I educate my players and teach them proper mechanics but also mental set. Acknowledge that the jump shot is more than a motion of physical ability and talent, it takes a great amount of thinking and implying the information you already know to what you learned. All coaches throughout the country regardless of their level should have knowledge of biomechanics and require there staff to also know the following information. This allows the opportunity for kids to learn the correct technique, prevent injuries, and transform them as a player.

The basketball shoe frenzy began with the "one- design" era of the Converse All-Star "Chuck Taylor" basketball sneakers in 1917. The Converse's (or Chuck Taylor's) construction was a rubber sole and canvas upper. It was specifically designed to be an "elite sneaker" for professional basketball leagues. The only choices that consumers had between the shoe's designs were a high-cut model or a low-cut model. It was a pretty basic sneaker that came in an array of colors. Today, basketball shoes are high tech advancements of participant performance, as well as a fashion accessory. Basketball shoes have swept beyond the basketball world and penetrated the world on a large scale, but its purpose of "protecting players" remains the same.

Light is both part particle and part wave. Light is “the electromagnetic radiation that may be perceived by the human eye”. It consists of photons, which are massless bundles of concentrated electromagnetic energy. Light’s lower frequency is red, and the higher frequency is blue. Like sound, light has frequencies humans can’t detect. Ultraviolet light is at a frequency higher than violet, and infrared is at the frequency lower than the red of visible light. We get UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun, and infrared is used in night vision to see better.
The most important part of the game of basketball is shooting the basketball, after all the object of the game is to put the basketball through the basket. A shot is taken by a player pushing on the ball and launching it toward the basket and upon the ball hitting the rim or backboard physics refers to this action as a contact force. Using this concept of contact force a shot can be calculated exactly. From a player’s height, the mass of the ball and a given position on the court which would include the distance from the basket it is possible to calculate the exact angle and force the shooter must apply to make a basket every time he or she shoots the ball. Of course if it were this easy basketball would not be as fun to watch or play. The problem with hitting a shot every time with the calculated angle and force is that the ball would have to travel toward the basket with the exact angle and force calculated for that particular shot. What makes this difficult is that the muscles in our body would have to be controlled flawlessly to push the ball with the exact amount of force and to give the ball the exact angle that is needed every time a shot is taken...

There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.

Perceptual organisation occurs when one groups the basic elements of the sensory world into the coherant objects that one perceives. Color is perceived by the human eye and brain together by translating light into color. Light receptors within the eye transmit messages to the brain, which produces the familiar sensations of color. The retinas in the eyes have receptors for color called cones, iris color is actually the result of the amount or density of pigment cells in the iris. Pigment cells, called melanocytes, produce the pigment known as melanin. The amount and density of the melanin determines what colors of light are absorbed and what is reflected. In retrospect, the higher the concentration of melanin in the iris, the darker the iris color.
