Social Media is one of the most powerful sources of connecting with one another in todays’ society. With a growing emphasis on using social media to advertise, we are seeing more and more companies converting their efforts to better understand social media and how advertising through social media can positively impact their company. Of the many social media sites out there, one of the most influential to business growth through advertising is that of Facebook. Facebook is a social networking site which boasts over 600 million users, and with their center of attention directed toward advertising, its easy to see why a company would like to promote their image on the site. Many of these companies however choose to turn to Facebook in order to do so, and there are many reasons why this is happening. The most influential determining factor when it comes to advertising on Facebook is the use of Facebook’ s custom audience targeting features. The creation of audience targeting allows advertisers the ability to tailor ads to the likeness of the consumer based off of their user profile they created for Facebook when the user signed up. The specificity of the user profile also entails the advertisers to easily determine which target market the consumer falls in and whether or not the company needs to make any changes to the ads in order to maintain the users attention. An article from “Why Should You Spend Money on Facebook Advertising” by Hannah Corbett explains that the custom audience targeting for the use of advertising and marketing includes “location, age, gender, interests, education, job, life events, “likes”, and apps” (Corbett). Generally most companies want to separate themselves from the competition and there are multiple ways in which a company can do so with Facebook advertising. The most popular techniques that companies tend to use when advertising on Facebook are page likes, clicks to website, app installs, and paid post engagement (Gregorio). Page likes are generated once a company decides to create a Facebook page to promote their product or brand. The more likes the page receives, the more likely it is to get noticed whether it be in the news feed portion of the site or during an individual search of interest. The higher the number of page likes is important solely based on the fact that a higher number of likes could represent a popularity among users, attracting more users to the page (Gregorio). Clicks to website is another aspect of Facebook advertising which focuses on drawing consumers in by clicking on their specific website or Facebook page. By using this method, there has been a proven increase in the number of users who have landed on the webpage.
