Playing an integral part in our society, Canada is known for the multiculturalism that is encouraged within the various types of religions and cultures. This has given the citizens of Canada a push for our society to grow as a whole. Canada is a multicultural country in many aspects and with that being said, this means Canada is populated with a large number of immigrants. This gives us a variety of concepts such as maintaining first languages to help students with English, barriers that are set due to first languages, but also the strong support that is given to the citizens of ethnic first languages. Given these statements, there are personal experiences that are relatable through this piece. With attention to the diverse population of Canada, we can identify the different types of religions and cultures. Since 2001, the immigrants that have migrated here annually range from 221,352 to 262,236 (Government of Canada). Correspondingly Canada currently has one of the highest per capita immigration rates in the world, driven by economic policy and family reunification (Dingari). Having said that, most of these immigrants are learning or speaking English as their second language. Through diversity, different languages bring in different perspectives and contribute to society as an addition to Canada’s globalization efforts. Different languages builds different communities within our society which brings similar people closer together to build closeness with one another but at the same time they are also open to other kinds of ethnic diversity. Incidentally the non-existent knowledge of mother tongue creates barriers between their personal lives and in connection to their family (Wisco). Canadian multiculturalism is completely different than what takes place in different countries. It goes without saying that not every picture can be painted with the same type of brush because the world is not full of the same picture that has a white washed idealized understanding. With that being said, the problems in other countries are not inherent to the multiculturalism picture in other countries.

According to citizen and immigration Canada statistics, (Immigrating to Canada, 2009), each year, Canada welcomes more than 200,000 new immigrants. It creates a diverse of multiple nationalities. Most immigrants from Europe or their descendants have religious backgrounds which respect universal fraternity. Also the multiculturalism makes Canada a "melting pot" for every member in the "pot". People respect each other and live together peacefully. People with different backgrounds live together peacefully without discrimination.

In the essay “Mother Tongue” Amy Tan, the author, gives a different, a more upbeat outlook on the various forms of English that immigrants speak as they adapt to the American culture. Using simple language to develop her argument, she casually communicates to the audience rather than informing which helps the audience understand what is being presented at ease. Her mother plays an important role in her outlook of language, because she helps her realize that language not only allows one to be a part of a culture but create one’s identity in society. The country’s history is very unique because it’s based heavily on immigration; Canada was established by the combined efforts from the indigenous First Nations and the European settlers from various parts of Europe. No single group can claim Canada to be theirs because it was a country built by immigrants and refugees from around the globe. Immigration has greatly influenced Canadian identity; it has become the vehicle which forged the character of Canada, as immigration policy changed so did the Canadian identity. The immigration sponsorship in addition to refugee programs made it possible for many Canadian refugees to reunite with their families, these programs influenced many refugees when deciding to immigrate to Canada. The multiculturalism and bilingualism is what makes this country standout as the number one immigrant destination. The various backgrounds, and nationalities which make up Canadian society, provides Canada with sense of diversity which can’t be found anywhere in the world. Canada must remain at the forefront of refugee immigration, changing or eliminating refugee programs will cause a loss of national identity.

I belong to the Canadian culture and will be examining the main elements of this culture such as its symbols, language, norms and values. Canada is considered to be a multiculturalist country, which can reveal why some aspects of my Polish heritage are incorporated into my culture and identity. Therefore, I believe that there is cultural diversity in Canada and that individuals can relate to different cultural identities in this culture, which is not the case for others around the world.

Nevertheless, it is important to remember that language is a significant component of ethnicity. However, as any other (component of ethnicity), “it can be perceived and dealt with differently in analysis and classification” (Jenkins): for many ethnic minority groups language proved to be a cornerstone of their vitality, but for such countries as Canada it is rather an optional characteristic in formulating modern ethnicity.
