According to the Erasmus overseas study programme, approximately 40% of college students is interested in working lives abroad (Coughlan, 2014). Work and Travel program provides students with an opportunity to live in foreign countries during their summer break from college or university to experience and to be exposed to the people and way of life in overseas which this gives students a chance to explore something new, gain independence, and immerse themselves in its culture. Additionally, they do not only work, but they also are able to reward themselves by travelling around the country they live in or outside after they complete the job. On top of that, they get to discover what it’s really like to live, work, and travel outside of their home, and not to mention earning lots of money. As Katie Bateman, a careers advisor at the University of Gloucestershire, points out that graduates will surely improve their English skills by embracing change and adjust to a different language (Hipkiss, 2016). Students can learn languages by talking to their employers or colleagues, and some positions of work have to deal with customers which it can be a way to practice the language. In addition, moving to another country can help people to know diverse languages. According to Laura Blackwell, an information technology student at the University of Gloucestershire, she participated in Work and Travel program in junior year, and she worked at a restaurant where a majority of people speak Spanish (Hipkiss, 2016). Consequently, by the time she lived there, she learned new words everyday and was able to understand some Spanish.
