Sports are a fundamental aspect of the culture in which we live. Sports are a tool for entertainment for many and provide a way for individuals to come together. However, there have been multiple instances in which sports, primarily at the high school and college level, are controversial topics of discussion. There have been numerous instances where schools have been punished tremendously for violations against the NCAA. Athletes and coaches must understand these rules and regulations because there could be drastic implications that can affect more than just them. A big issue with this is determining if the punishments fit the crimes committed and if they are excessive or not. There must be research done to understand examples of different
This violation involved helping student athletes by providing them with materials such as clothing. This case is explained in the article, “Infractions case: Ohio State University.” Within the article the main source of the violation is stated as, “The committee found that Prospect A also received a number of benefits from a booster, including cash, lodging, meals, and clothing” (“Infractions case: Ohio State University”). I have researched and found that a majority of cases with schools involve some type of booster or a coach that reaches out to recruits or current student athletes and gives them benefits. Providing improper benefits for these athletes is extremely frowned upon by the NCAA. Building upon the ideas of the NCAA, Maureen A. Weston suggests in her article titled, “NCAA Sanctions: Assigning Blame Where It Belongs”, that it is wrong to do this with student athletes, but the repercussions of the actions might be not correct. Weston explains, “the reach of sanctions has ripple effects that impair uninvolved programs and innocent student-athletes” (Weston 16). She is illustrating that many other innocent students get punished for the foolishness of the few. The penalties should not be accessed in the program as a whole but only to the individuals involved. Examples of ethical issues would be the factor of breaking these rules would be an act of cheating, as well as putting innocent student athletes in danger of being punished. From the article “Former Northeastern coach failed to promote atmosphere for compliance,” this case was about a former Northeastern head coach that did not comply and performed unethical conduct as the coach of the school’s tennis program. The coach was providing extra benefits for certain athletes along with having athletes call international recruits to attempt to get them to commit to their school. The NCAA stated, “Because his actions did not demonstrate the compliance with the NCAA rules, the committee cited him for failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance and unethical conduct” (“Former Northeastern Coach”). This violation was punished by a cancellation of the program for the next year. An author named Robert L. Simon agrees with this rule of ethical issues in his book titled “The Ethics of Coaching Sports.” Simon mentions, “A coach who violates NCAA recruitment rules also fails to teach and model values such as fair play” (Simon 242). These sources agree with one another the rules of the NCAA regarding the treatment of student athletes and recruits are justifiable because they are ensuring that everyone is on a fair playing field and no school is
