Intervention - Overview
My intervention is to see how beneficial it is to start the 21st Century Learning Skills with young children ranging in ages from infant to four years old. In today’s society it seems as though there are many young children out there who are not prepared for Kindergarten or the first grade. Starting at a young age to prepare the children is important because if they are capable which they are, why should they be held back from all of the learning they are capable of doing. Also, teachers are a major impact in this active research because that is how the children are learning as well as their families. There is so much confusion for them and their families are just as confused because if feel as though they are unable to help and support their child with their work because they have never seen the types of lessons being presented for completion. I strongly believe that no child should be left behind because it can lead them down a negative path of life at an early age. It is depressing to see and hear about children who struggle with school so they decide other choices that are not so promising of a great future.
Reading, writing and mathematics are a struggle for children throughout their educational experience and I think that it would make the biggest difference in their education if we start implementing the new teaching styles now. I think does learning need to be a struggle? It does not especially if we have the proper tools to help support and guide children through their learning experiences and prepare them as their willing throughout their young ages.
Intervention – Literature
All children grow, develop, and learn in their own ways. A key challenge for parents and practitioners involved in early intervention programs is to encourage their child to play and develop creatively through enjoyable, everyday childhood experiences. With that being said, early childhood intervention is extremely important to help in setting a great foundation for the child’s developmental trajectory and success in improving their cognitive and social skills with their families and within the communities. Throughout the course of the class and completing the My Virtual Child assignment, I have been given new information in regards to childhood development through the lifespan. Starting with infancy, we had the opportunity to raise our own child online and test our parenting skills while applying the knowledge we learned from class. I believe this program has helped me grasp the concepts we learned in class and fully understand the different aspects of development throughout childhood.

This should not be too surprising, our children are studying history books that are from a decade ago. This creates difficult obstacles for our children to keep up on current politics and other global events. Also the over crowding of classrooms makes it extremely difficult for your child to get that personalized learning which may determine his or her ability to learn at all. Every child learns at a different rate and possibly in different ways, this makes it virtually impossible for teachers to tap into every child’s full learning potential. If your child needs that extra, personalized attention, but is not "defined" as handicapped their specific learning needs will most likely be overlooked and that may be the beginning of your child’s inability to learn.
Volunteering at a children’s crisis treatment facility, volunteering with Special Olympics, coaching children’s sports teams for 10 years and working as a substitute education assistant has increased my understanding of childhood development. Grandmound Elementary School provides me with opportunities to strengthen my leadership and collaboration skills, through teaching art (as a volunteer) to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and serving as PTA president. I was able to implement many enriching opportunities for students in areas of art, science, and reading. I learned to work as a team, set targets, achieve goals, give and receive guidance. Participating in these activities has confirmed that working with families and particularly children are my purpose.
Education is the foundation of American society. It empowers the youth of America to become the successful leaders this country needs for the future. Education has been one of America’s top priorities since 1965, when the Elementary and Secondary Education Act was passed. Now, education is controlled by the No Child Left Behind Act, which was launched in January 8, 2002. This act was passed with intentions from the government to provide Americans with a more superior education system. However, The No Child Left Behind Act carried many flaws which were left unseen to a vast majority of the public. This act limited American students by not allowing them to demonstrate their full academic potentials while proceeding in school. While the act was still fairly fresh, there was already evidence to prove that it had already gotten off to a bad beginning. For the crucial math and science courses, statistics showed minimal improvements which had begun around the time period in which the No Child Left Behind Act was passed. The act was also supported by a number of educators who voiced themselves by testifying against having the right to teach at their own free will. Teachers across America claimed that because of this new act, they felt a constant heaviness upon their shoulders from the state government to “Teach the test.”
Parent-child intervention programs are another use for the theory. Children learn from experiences based on their home life. “Children’s strategies for managing emotions, resolving disputes, and engaging with others are learned from experience and carried forward across setting and time. For younger children especially, the primary source of these experiences is the parent–child and family relationship environment” (O’Connor, Matias, Futh, Tantam & Scott, 2013).Young children witness much of their learned behaviors from their parents. Every child should be entitled to a proper and equal education no matter their cultural background, social standing, or immigration status. “The American Dream, which relies on the ideal of equal opportunity for all… Schools are supposed to level the playing field that result from inequalities in family resources” (Kao 2013). No one student should have to bear the burden of an uncertain destination. They at times witness friends getting ahead while their education gets delayed because of various laws that obstruct their pathway to becoming successful.
Teachers must pay attention to presenting to their students, is very important in their education. If the student finds it too much of challenge there will give up and if it’s too easy there will be bored. An example of teaching strategies is scaffolding strategic support that teachers provide that allows children to complete a task they could not accomplish independently (Vygotsky, 1978; Wood, Bruner, & Ross, 1976). Teacher needs to plan out a task according to the child ability to help they respond and engaged the lesson there increase their independent performance in school. As early childhood educators, we have many responsibilities to countless people and institutions. The most important responsibility that has been reinforced to me over the years is the responsibility for the well-being of children. Not simply the ones in my care, but all children everywhere. This can be accomplished in many ways such as advocacy. Organizations such as NAEYC, of which I am a member, engage in collective public policy advocacy which involves speaking out for and participating in activities that support and protect vulnerable populations such as children (Freeman, Decker & Decker, 2013). By volunteering at the Judy Center and after-school enrichment programs such as Bridges, I have had to opportunity and privilege to meet and collaborate with many wonderful social workers, advocates, and others who toil so diligently to improve the lives of children. “Helping young children become what they are capable of becoming is what the field of early childhood is all about,” (Colmer, Waniganayake, & Field, 2014, 103). In order to accomplish this, early childhood professionals need to continue to grow and develop as professionals. My philosophy of early childhood education and the elements I believe are necessary in developing a developmentally appropriate child care environment is rooted in my views and beliefs about experimentalism, progressivism, multiculturalism, and the influence of philosophers such as Dewey, Piaget, Montessori, and Vygotsky. Furthermore, I believe young children will thrive and grow in developmentally appropriate child care programs that possess the following elements: (1) teachers who see themselves as intentional, responsive and respectful facilitators of learning, (2) the ability to build a community of learners, (3) implement an effective curriculum that allow children to explore their natural curiosity about the world.
The purpose of early childhood education is to firstly learn about one’s self and agency, how one’s actions can affect and impact others; to develop a sense of identity; who you are and how you fit into this world.
