Stereotype, when used as a transitive verb, by definition means “to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same.” In other cases, when it is used as a noun, it is defined as “an often untrue belief that many people have about all people or things with a particular characteristic. Our society defines stereotype as a type of prejudgment one assumes about a person wherein they categorized him/her into a group where other people possess a certain characteristic or trait that he/she shares as well. Although most teenagers believe stereotyping and judging others is harmless, they have no idea what effect it may have on the teen being discriminated against.
Eagly (2014) claimed that the stereotypes of each of the social groups matched the qualities that the participants ascribed to the typical occupations of the social group in question. For some, it is the act of categorizing a specific person into a larger group of people. While some stereotypes may seem harmless, the detriments of seeing an individual as representing a group are far-reaching. Stereotyping takes away any possibility for students to branch out and grow as individuals.
In contrary with that, Duczeminski (2013) stated that “Although stereotyping seems harmless, it can lead to things such as racism, discrimination, prejudice, and sadly, bullying. Stereotype threat is present in our everyday lives and it prevents people from doing things to their fullest abilities. It is the fear of confirming a negative stereotype about you resulting in weaker performance. An example where stereotype threat exists is in the case where African Americans do poorly on tests compared to Caucasian individuals. This occurs because the stereotype is that African Americans are intellectually inferior to Caucasian people. In a setting where the negative stereotype is brought to mind, African Americans will perform poorly on tests when in fact they are able to perform equally as well if not better than Caucasian individuals. (Article 1) Stereotype threat limits individuals in their performance in academics, sports or even something like driving. By reducing stereotype threat, performance in many areas can improve and people can perform tasks to their fullest potentials. Stereotype threat leads to underachievement in academic and work related situations. People may feel they cannot rise above the stereotype and become limited in their successes. Everyday we experience stereotyping in one way or another. Over the years stereotyping has become such a large part of our society that it is a vital part of our everyday communication. A stereotype is an exaggerated generalization used to describe a group of people. Discrimination is the unequal treatment of different categories of people. An example of a stereotype would be the generalization that a majority of African American youth are gangbangers or criminals. An example of discrimination would be the mocking of an Asian student’s accent each time they spoke in class. Stereotypes are everywhere and can often create problems for people, however they become even more detrimental to teens, especially at schools. Writer and science correspondent for the NRA, Shankar Vedantam, in his article, “How a Self-Fulfilling Stereotype Can Drag Down Performance,” explains that stereotypes can hurt the performance of the person that it is associated with. He supports his claim by first explaining that how well people do on tests are determined by who administers the questions, then he explains that studies show that when people take tests and they are reminded of negative stereotypes that associate with them, then they don’t do as well, and finally he states that the studies are being widely ignored by all the people who should take heed of the findings, such as test makers and college acceptance people. Vedantam’s purpose is to tell you about the research conducted by Huang in order to inform you that stereotypes can affect performance on tests. In my 9th grade class at Point Loma High School, we were given questions about stereotypes from our teacher to interview two students.
Everyone has heard the saying don’t judge a book by a cover. Sadly every minute of the day someone gets judged because of assumptions that are not correct. These assumptions overtime eventually lead to stereotypes. A stereotype is an image or idea of a particular type of person.
