Space-time compression and space-time distanciation are characteristic of our current globalized world and result in the speeding up of socio-economic processes and the stretching of our social world. They are concepts that have changed the way humans inhabit space and in my life are terms that have directly enabled long-distance relationships between family members and myself while I have been away at college. While space-time compression and distanciation have allowed for the expansion of my familial ties across a massive distance, it has not been without change to the nature and tendencies of said ties. I feel selfish if I cannot find a few minutes to call my family members, but at the same time I get extremely irritated when they express unhappiness over my inability to stay in contact. The ease of long distance communication associated with space-time compression has also inserted new expectations about the temporality of my relationships. While living at home, if I missed a text or call there was no sense of urgency to respond as I knew I could answer the question or continue the conversation in person. Now, an unanswered text or call remains hanging in the air as face-to-face contact is no longer viable. Space-time distanciation has imposed a pseudo-requirement for my family in which we all expect prompt replies to our modes of virtual communication. This however, can cause my immediate social world to feel crowded. For me, my immediate social world has doubled since I left for college as I have created a new social life embedded in my current locality as well as continued connections with people from home in a virtual manner. Einstein's theory of relativity is a famous theory, but it's little understood. Essentially, the theory of relativity refers to two different parts of the same theory: special relativity and general relativity. The theory of special relativity was introduced first, and was later considered to be a special case of the more comprehensive theory of general relativity. During the nineteenth century, scientists believed that light is a wave. They reasoned that waves of light need a medium to travel through, so they invented the concept of "ether." Light was thought to transmit through the ether, which stands still while all matter moves through it. In order to measure the earth's speed through the ether, Albert A. Michelson and Edward Morley collaborated on an experiment in 1887. In the experiment, one beam of light took a route against the ether and back while the other was perpendicular to the ether. Michelson and Morley expected to calculate the speed of the earth through the ether, to their surprise, the beams of light completed the course in the same time. However, the well-known Michelson-Morley experiment had failed to detect Earth's motion relative to the ether and no one could explain why. Something was wrong with the traditional understanding of relativity as it applied to light. The act of time travel assumes that we can travel time at a rate different when compared to the normal world. There are several theories on how one could travel through time physically even if the methods wouldn’t make a lot of sense logically. These methods range from altered movement in regular space to the abuse of certain cosmic phenomena which may or may not exist. In this paper I will argue that the physical possibility of time travel is sound and therefore possible even if only theoretically.
