Socialization may be one of the significant practices in our everyday lives. It may support people to learn and adapt additional ethics and knowledge. It may also not just concern interaction with people and participation in different activities, for it may also concern the adjustment of oneself in an unfamiliar environment.
However, even though socialization is vital in the life of a college student, there may still be certain students who just prefer to be isolated every day. One reason that may affect the lack of social integration is the academic performance of the students (Gerdes & Malinckrodt, 1994). In addition, McBroom (1997) reported eleven factors related to the academic success of the students, and three of the factors are concerned with socialization which are contact with peers, engaging in extracurricular activities, and assertiveness (as cited in Almog, 2011).
To resolve the lack of social integration of particular students, one way for a student to adjust in the new environment is by connecting with unfamiliar people and sharing common interest. Besides, the role of socialization can be related to the acquaintance of each individual in the norms of a society or a social group. Worlandk (2010), suggests that allotment of time is needed for both academic requirements and social life to have an equilibrium in life. School works should be finished first before socializing, so a student will never be bothered regarding the workloads and will have interaction with other people afterwards through socializing. Nevertheless, academics and socializing is both significant and students need not to select between those since anyone can just simply manage time and organize their schedule so they could focus on one task at a time.
