In most cases the boundaries enlarge either through conflicts, invasion, grabbing or even stealing. New boundaries are thus formed through either expansion or reduction of the already existing ones. The minute the boundaries change, the society is automatically confronted with new challenges related to this adjustment. Charles Tilly a social scientist, is convinced that, a lot of related problems regarding the social boundaries shifts arise and become complicated when one really needs to understand their origin and their functions. For instance, when the urge of explaining their origin, motives and the impact they have on the community arises. Secondly, attempting to figure out what manner was used during their formation. I was able to relate to when Jessie said that borders are symbols of the divisions we make of each other. These borders are made up by people to keep each other apart from one another. Whether it is for social, economic, or cultural reasons, the division remains. As Brooke pointed out, these borders prevent freedoms and deny opportunities.
Boonin argues that the state could ensure the minimum conditions necessary for just mutual relations between its citizens by relying on a practice of pure restitution instead of punishment. In this paper, I will argue that Boonin’s argument fails because he has a different mind set which a lot of people do not agree with. In other words, I think about punishment as a huge different way. I do not think he expresses punishment in a good way.
For the purpose of this essay, this writer will define reciprocity as the expectation or ‘norm’ that people will respond to another party in the same manner in which the other party has treated them. So, for practical purposes, this means rewarding a good deed with another good deed, and punishing a bad deed with another bad deed. Of course, in order for a system like this to produce a favorable outcome, both groups must start out with good deeds, otherwise the system will only lead to relatively permanent hostilities.
Black codes that were passed after the civil war ended was an effort to restrict civil rights for African Americans. They helped maintain a cheap source of farm labor and sustained the Social Hierarchy. Black codes made it illegal to carry weapons or even vote. They weren’t able to serve in juries, testify in court, marry white citizens and travel without permits. The Ku Klux Klan terrorized African Americans. Even though African Americans were the Ku Klux Klan’s main target they also attacked Jews, Gays, Lesbians, and Catholics. Blacks were separated at schools, theaters, and other public places. The Ku Klux Klan and other terrorists murdered thousands of blacks and some whites to prevent them from voting and participating in public life. In, Body Work by Sara Paretsky, the Guaman family’s homophobia damages their family by causing both Allie’s rape and death, and the covering up of them. Homophobia manages to cause all of this damage because it is a powerful social control mechanism, meaning it leads individuals towards conformity, and shames and or ostracizes those who don’t conform to the societal norm. In this case, the societal norm is heterosexuality, and homosexuals are shamed and ostracized for deviating from that norm. Allie is ashamed of being a lesbian and decides to serve in Iraq in the hope that she can repent for her “sins,” and her family is so ashamed of her homosexuality that they must deny it, which allows Tintrey to cover up the truth behind Allie’s death.
Historically it has been viewed that one's place in society is fixed. This concept included the notion that not only was it impossible for one to move up in society, but also that it was difficult for one to move down the social ladder. The American dream, of course, promotes the idea that one can move up in the social ladder. However, many fail to realize that one can plummet from highest social class to the bottom, without even realizing how or why. John Cheever's The Swimmer, examines and reveals this problem through conflicts of attitude between the narrator and the viewpoint character, Neddy Merrill. The narrator conveys the attitude that social status is fleeting through the use of irony and shifts in time. Neddy's attitude, however, is to cling to his social status through denial, over-rationalization and an arrogant sense of invulnerability.
Taboos are social prohibitions that create difficulties in cooperative relations. Taboss have the three parts which has a prohibition, a punishment for breaking, and protective significance. A taboo can be recognize as a specific actions, thoughts, or actions as being out of bounds, which can create a dividing line of what is acceptable and unacceptable and also have the community to restrict what they seem is appropriate to. Taboos comes with punishment for people who violates. Taboos can have certain obstacles that makes it difficult as the unawareness of a taboo, fears of discussing the taboo issues, not framework how to treat taboo as an issue. Navigating taboos is to be aware of the taboos, creating safe zones to conversate them, and having the decision on how to treat the taboos. Taboos have a negative reputation as how they can influence in creating conflicts; however, taboos can also solve conflicts. Travis Hirschi presented a social bonding theory in 1969. The main idea of the social bonding theory is that each and every individual has a drive to act in selfish and even aggressive ways that might possibly lead to criminal behavior. Social bonding theory is somewhat have similarities with the Durkheim theory that “we are all animals, and thus naturally capable of committing criminal acts” (Tibbetts, 2012, p. 162). However, the stronger a person is bonded to the conventional society, for example, family, schools, communities, the less prone a person is to be involved in criminal activity. The great example of this would be the serial killer Nannie Doss. Since early age she did not have any bonds either to her family with an abusive father or to community she lived in. Most of the time during her childhood she was isolated from any social interactions with her schoolmates or friends.
There are many things that influence our behavior from internal influences to social norms. Social norms are implicit or explicit rules that govern how we behave in society (Maluso, class notes). Social norms influence our behavior more than any of us realize but we all notice when a norm has been broken. Breaking a social norm is not an easy task and often leads us feeling uncomfortable whether we broke the norm ourselves or witnessed someone else breaking it. Sometimes however, you just have to break a norm to see what happens.

Social norm is a way of dressing, talking, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. Most people in this world define themselves through their clothing, hairstyles, and experiences. Each person has a different behavior, which is due to the differences in traditions, cultures, education and experiences. The environment and social norms directly affect the person’s behavior. The way we behave is not right or wrong, but only what our society allows us to. In our society, we have a number of society norms that we accept. For example, the way we should behave in public, it is important for us to move away from strangers, and respect our elders. The family is one of the first avenues by which children begin to form their understanding of social norms. Parents are constantly teaching their children what is appropriate and what is not appropriate.

In 1969, Travis Hirschi developed what is known as Social Bond Theory. Hirschi built on the work of other social control theorists and was able to provide a better picture of what social bond is. In Social Bond Theory there are four basic elements that make up social bonds. They are attachment, involvement, commitment, and belief. It is these four bonds that all humans hold and ultimately determine conformity or deviant behavior(Agnew, 1985).
