Anu Karavadi Mrs. Findley English III 3 March 2014 Political Correctness is Harmful “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” This is simply just not true. Words do hurt people. Words can embarrass and humiliate (Gallagher). Words are the basics of communication and self expression which can be harmful, but that does not allow it to be completely eliminated. Yes, words can be harmful, but how far can we go to make everyone happy. Those who speak their mind are ostracized by many. The truth gets masked and ignored in order to keep everyone’s feelings in check. This movement is harmful because: it kills progress, individuality, and freedom. First, the movement kills any form of social progress. The truth is covered with political correctness which grows more problems instead of solving them. In America, the people are not allowed to discuss some topics due to their taboo nature. People are taught to hold their tongue on discussions of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, physical abilities, and etc because otherwise they could be called a sexist, racist, and or bigot. These terms are thrown around so much and with no regard of the consequences. This barrage of terms make many scared to say anything because if they do they'll be labeled as hateful. This ignoring of “taboo” topics make it harder to fix the problems of actual hate and ignorance (Gallagher). Talking about diversity and asking questions allow ignorance and hate to be gone which is the goal of this movement. Though the politically correct throw around hateful labels, they ironically also allow no personal responsibility for people’s actions. Second, the movement kills individuality through loss of reality. The actions of people are not ... ... middle of paper ... ... and will grow to cause more problems. Political correctness is nice in theory because it advocates sensitivity for others, but this solution does not allow for any progress and regresses any current progress (Gallagher). The solution is truth. The truth shall allow America to grow. The truth can show what the actual problem is instead of shunning an idea of a problem. This ultimately kills the individual’s basic right to express oneself. Works Cited Gallagher, BJ. "The Problem With Political Correctness." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 25 Feb. 2013.
