Is Pet Ownership As Easy As We Thought?
A pet can be considered any domesticated or tamed animal kept as a companion and cared for affectionately. The safekeeping and health of an animal is essential no matter the circumstances, as well as the level of knowledge the carer possesses. Being a pet owner can be very demanding and commitment oriented. One must focus on the wellbeing and happiness of not only the pets, but the owners as well. Therefore, one should really think through the decision of becoming a pet owner before deciding to procure a “pet”, Being a pet owner is a privilege that results in a mutually beneficial relationship while still having a demand for responsibility. It’s necessary to have proper care when it comes to safekeeping,

Whether the reason be that the animal became aggressive, the family couldn’t take care of it, or any other causes. Dysfunctions start to appear within the animal world. The owners begin to neglect their pets to the point where animals get horrible diseases and health problems including ticks, mange, broken bones, unintended pregnancies, heart warms, blindness, starvation, and more. These are all cases where a pet owner neglected or refused to follow the necessary steps to ensure a pet's health and happiness. Within the article Crackdown on animal abuse it states, “Psychologists, experts who study human behavior, say animal cruelty often stems from a desire by abusers to exercise power over helpless creatures” (pg. 1). A pets care and contentment starts to decline when an owner abandons the necessary steps mentioned in the previous paragraphs. Not only do some owners neglect their pets but abuse and cruelty begin to become a factor in some cases which can emotionally and physically cause and animal to …show more content…

Have you ever wondered how much it costs to have and maintain a pet? Burkhard Bilger, the author of “The Last Meow”, explains how Americans spend a lot of money on their pets and that people's “love affair” with their pets has gotten out of control. An observation I have made is that in many movies dogs are treated very well. When I was younger, I watched a movie called Bratz and one character would always have her dog inside a dog purse and they would even get manicures and pedicures together. The dog always had shiny clothes on and it was always very clean. Therefore, I agree with Bilger's argument that Americans “love affair” with their pets has gotten out of control.

There are many statistics that come with animal abuse. Did you know that 71% of all domestic violence cases state that the attacker harmed the animal(s) as well (animalcruelty.weebly.com ; 5th dot)? 47 out of the 50 U.S. states treat animal abuse as a felony(www.humainsociety.org/issues/abuse_neglect/ ;4th paragraph). In all animal abuse cases 64.5% involve dogs (1212 cases, mainly pitbulls), 18% (337 cases), and 25% (470 cases) involve other animals being harmed (www.humainsociety.org/issues/abuse_neglect/facts/animal_cruelty_facts_statistics.html#.u3E...

“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...

Owning a pet can have many physical and mental health benefits. Medical studies show having a pet result's in lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Pets have a role in cardiovascular health from lowering blood pressure, and they encourage psychosocial stability in owners, which further reduces the risk of heart disease. In the hectic and fast-paced world we live in today, pets are actually saving our lives. Pets provide an excuse to be active, dogs live an active lifestyle, wanting to play and run around outside. By making us more active and improving our health, dogs often provide a good workout! Instead of sitting on the couch being lazy, dogs are eager to transfer their energy and enthusiasm to the owner benefiting both dog and owner in many ways. Studies show that dogs demonstrate trust and provide comfort to the sick or elderly thus helping people to live longer and to be more positive as they age. Animal owners over 75 years of age have f...
Owning a Pet Having a pet is a wonderful idea! Pets bring companionship, personality, and gut wrenching humor to households across the world. Having previously owned both a cat and a dog, and currently being without a pet, I began to think about getting a new furry friend. Born a dog lover, and bred into a cat lover, I had the difficult decision of choosing one of the two. When I was twenty-two years old, I answered an advertisement in the paper for free Labrador puppies.
For animal welfare and the causes of animal abuse new research has been created. Since animal abuse is fairly a new subject, new research is constantly brought up. In the Bahamas a study was done in the College of Bahamas, and it states that, “…dogs were equally likely to be considered members of the household in homes without domestic violence,” (Fielding 197). Homes with violence show that humans substitute human victims for animal victims. Animal rights activists are trying to break down symbolic boundaries betw...
I will discuss each one in more detail. Many people who abuse animals do not realize that they are actually hurting animals, this is known as unintentional. When some people try to discipline their pets, they use tactics that they think are acceptable, when in reality, this is probably not the best way. People also abuse animals due to lack of attention, such as forgetting to feed and water the animals for a number of days. A family may take the animals with them when they leave the house, and forget to leave a window down with the animal inside.
