What is motor memory? Motor memory is our muscle memory that has been synonymously with motor learning, which is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition. As we grow up we learn how to speak, see, smell, and touch. Motor memory is the result of motor learning, which involves developing new muscular coordination. Motor memory plays a huge role in our life because it makes us proficient at the things we learn, but we are only proficient at it if we are consistently practicing it over and over again until it becomes a part of us. Our long- term memory can last for more than few days, months, or forever. Our long-term memory also has strong and weak category. For example the weak category would be only when something comes in our mind through prompting or reminding, while the strong category we could recall events and do procedure that happened quite a while ago. With long-term memory being very useful they also have their con side. We don’t imprint a memory or leave it as if untouched. We often revise the memory over time and merge it by incorporating what others tells us about our memory. Our memory are not strictly constant and are not always reliable, especially when it comes from our long-term motor memory. In conclusion, when we learn new muscular movements like playing another sport or learning new physical skills. Our body is likely to perform at a high level when we stay consistent with our practice. With the new movements we learn, our motor memory transfers information from one another which turns short – term memory to long – term memory. As the process goes through our body also learns how to cut off wasted body energy when we practice new movements over and over again. Additionally, other theories have recognised different types of memories that we experience, therefore it is debatable that all these different memories occur only in the long-term memory as presumed by the multi-store model which states the long term memory store as with unlimited capacity, in addition it also fails to explain how we recall information.

In fact, human memory is quite the opposite of a video camera; it can be greatly influenced and even often distorted by interactions with its surroundings (Walker, 2013). According to Sternberg (1999), memory is the extraction of past experiences for information to be used in the present. The retrieval of memory is essential in every aspect of daily life, whether it is for academics, work or social purposes. However, many often take memory for granted and assume that it can be relied on because of how realistic it appears in the mind. This form of memory is also known as flashbulb memory. (Brown and Kulik, 1977). The question of whether our memory is reliably accurate has been shown to have implications in providing precise details of past events. (The British Psychological Association, 2011). In this essay, I would put forth arguments that human memory, in fact, is not completely reliable in providing accurate depictions of our past experiences. Evidence can be seen in the following two studies that support these arguments by examining episodic memory in humans. The first study is by Loftus and Pickrell (1995) who found that memory can be modified by suggestions. The second study is by Naveh-Benjamin and Craik (1995) who found that there is a predisposition for memory to decline with increasing age.
