It was easy for me turn down peer pressure because I knew what type effect drug have on a person, it made my parent steal, lie, or do whatever it takes to get drugs. Maslow’s theory is simple, if your basic needs our met you will strive to achieve your next level of need. As you achieve human needs you will desire greater needs until you reach self- actualization or transcendence. Throughout this paper first I will be discussing Maslow’s theory and the different levels of achievement. As well as the changes he made to his theory in the 70’s. I will talk about the grouping for these achievements and where they fit in the hierarchy of needs. Secondly, we will talk about how Maslow’s theory motivates and how we use it in our careers. Lastly, I will bring up how this theory fits into the fire service. I will also show how to use it as a motivational tool as a manager. In my conclusion I will discuss the differences we can make just by fallowing this platform of motivation to create the most motivated firefighters.
The theory which contributes to the theme is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs which talks about “a positive environment and positive relationships are an important part of supporting every child or young person’s needs”, Taylor Et al, (2012:p13). Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is most often displayed as a pyramid. As people progress up the pyramid, needs become increasingly psychological and social. Maslow talks about children’s safety needs and how they need to feel security. “Maslow placed a real importance on ensuring that children have their basic needs met before they can learn”, Taylor Et al, (2012; p40). Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, is relevant to safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of children and young people as, safety needs is one of the needs on the pyramid. When one thinks of what families do for each other, they will most likely think of care. More specifically they think of the care that a parent has for their child. Parents have to meet certain “needs” for the child in order for the its healthy survival. Children must be fed and clothed. Parents must also watch over the safety of and be the friends of the children. Cheering on in good times and making their child the best it can be are also responsibilities of parents. The family metaphor is used when describing the Human Relations method of management. In this the management of a company is seen as the parents and the employees are seen as the children. The development milestones consist of four stages in life in which we grow and learn as humans. First, there is the sensorimotor stage which occurs from age zero to age two where the child now understands how his or her actions can affect the environment around them. Second, comes the preoperational stage which involves children from the ages of two to seven where the child now thinks symbolically about the objects around them.
