According to Baltasar Gracian, “A single lie destroys a whole reputation of integrity.” Over the course of human history, lying has become an essential part of everyday life. From the time of Jesus to the time of the Internet, people lie to each other in different ways and for different reasons. However, some people often abused the use of lies and allowed the lie to be snowballed until other people found out, causing them to face devastating consequences. Though it is important to lie when facing life threatening situations, lying should not be used in another other occasion, especially when it is used for self interests. Even though privacy is very important for everyone and he or she might not want other people to know what is happening in his or her daily life, the authors and the speaker still encouraged the people to always be truthful to others as this quality set up a proper foundation for every kind of relationship to grow. Contrary to the beliefs of the authors and the speaker, I believe that honesty is sometimes but not always the best policy. In today’s world, everyone lies so much that it can potentially be a horrifying scenario of pinocchio. As a society, we are hypocrites in terms of honesty as we denounce dishonesty with our words but praise it in our actions by being ignorant to lies around us. I profess that the decision to whether lie or be honest is solely on the severity of the situation. For example, I would lie to protect other people’s feelings but would tell the truth when that lie can potentially snowballed into not only hurting my reputation, but others as well. Nevertheless, I would object to the idea of lying to conform into the society and accept peer pressure. This includes spreading rumors about other people in order to create a better reputation for myself. To summarize, I fathom the point of view that honesty is always the best policy presented by sources such as The Crucible by Arthur Miller, “Why Be Honest” by Alex Lickerman, and “Three Types of Digital Lies” by Jeff Hancock.
