It is predicted that extroverts, people who are typically outgoing and enjoy the company of others, make up about 50-74% of the global population. Introverts, people who seek time alone and tend to keep to themselves, make up the minority of the population. Seeing that introverts constitute less of the population, it makes sense why their needs may not be catered to, and how most institutions make it easier for extroverts to succeed. While extroverts may seem like they are better suited to thrive and carry out important projects or responsibilities, introverts have distinct characteristics that make them the best fit for certain positions. In schools, many teachers put a lot of stress on group activities, which can be anything from group discussions, where one may need to be loud and fearless when sharing opinions, to public speaking projects, which remains a weakness of many who are introverted. While it is extremely important for people to learn how to work in groups, share opinions without fear, and how to speak publicly, these activities are much easier for extroverts, who are typically outgoing and enjoy working with other people. Stretching the comfort zones of introverts can only be beneficial until a certain point, as they can easily become drained from the intense exposure in group settings. Teachers can give options, like recording a video rather than doing a live speech, in order to make introverts more comfortable, also granting them the ability to find more success in their academics. While schools should not completely eliminate group activities, there should be many more independent options for people who are introverted. Also, by seating student in group pods, the ability for introverts to take their time to think and react is eliminated. The Relevance of Introverts in Our Society Susan Cain, an introvert, wanted to delve deeper into what it means to be an introvert and why they are so undervalued. In today’s society, we have what is called the “extrovert ideal” which values people who are confident and seemingly extroverted, rather than quiet, secluded persons such as herself. As an introvert, I always seek for quiet downtime after a long fatigue day surrounded by millions of people at school. Unlike extroverts who gets energized by having conversations with other people, I gain energy from being in a quiet environment. Spending time independently was beneficial for me since I could improve on my problem-solving skills. Whenever there were occasions that I had to confront with numerous problems, I could easily handle them with my own ability because I have always practiced how to solve them on my own without relying on others. Not only my problem-solving skill has improved; but, the way how I manage my time has also improved. As many individuals would do, without any disturbance or pressure by other people, I could focus on my work in solitude. In timewise, it was capable for me to finish my homework way faster when I was alone compared to when I was with someone else.
