It is clear from studying society today, that being able to gather information and use it correctly is key to running a successful business or organisation. Information societies exist in every aspect of our lives and they are important for developing and improving the world we live in. But what exactly is an information society? Who uses them, and why? Information society is a term for a society in which the creation, distribution, and manipulation of information has become the most significant economic and cultural activity (WhatIs.com, 2016). These information societies are used by businesses and organisations to help them keep up to date with customer’s trends and preferences, and so they can keep an eye on what similar companies are doing …show more content…
It is fair to say that supermarkets have used them to their benefit superbly with the introduction of loyalty cards in the early 1990’s. Superquinn were the first supermarket to do this and they were soon followed by other large firms such as Dunne’s stores, Tesco and Supervalu. In an article written in “The Irish Times” by Conor Pope in 2013,(The Irish Times, 2013) he discusses this loyalty card system. Every time a customer purchases goods instore, it is recorded by the loyalty card. This builds up both a personal data model for the individual customer and a general data model. From what a customer buys, the supermarket can tell what age they are, if they are married, if they have kids and even if they are after a breakup. It is believed that somebody is most vulnerable when they are pregnant or just after having a baby. They are highly likely to be under a huge amount of stress and to be extremely tired. Thus, they are going to be more likely to shop in just the one store and to spend more money there. The supermarkets target these people by placing the diapers at the back of the store forcing them to walk through the whole shop and increasing the probability of them doing most of their shopping in this store. This is a tremendous business technique and it is clear that these large supermarkets are reaping the rewards of the information …show more content…
They introduced a new player tracking system in 2013 which has been fitted in every NBA stadium. This is a SportsVU system which includes 6 cameras, 3 on each half court. These cameras can record a vast amount of data at a time, and has changed sport forever. This system can track every player and ball movement 25 times per second. It will provide an in depth analysis on a certain aspect of the game, for example, rather than just figuring out how many rebounds per game a player got, SportVU can tell us how many chances to get a rebound a player had, and what the space on the court was like when the player was most successfully grabbing rebounds (Plafke, 2016) . It creates a data model for each player and team in the NBA which makes it easier for teams and players to improve themselves. By helping coaches make better decisions about tactics and player signings, it increases fan support and loyalty which generates millions of euros profit for the NBA each year in gate traffic, television sales and licensing (Turban, Rainer and Potter, 2001) . Before this SportsVU system existed the volume of data was enormous and it was practically impossible to record. An average basketball game could see over 200 possessions with over 1200 games per year. Because of this only basic data was collected and it wasn’t of much use. With the introduction of
Chapter one is an examination of different definitions of ‘information’ to support the concept of ‘information policy.’ Definitions that identify ‘information’ as a ‘constitutive force in society’ are most useful from the point of view of information policy (p.19).
After entering the modern society, people living in a high information environment, a salient feature of it is that peopl...
Have you ever watched a basketball game? Basketball is a great all-around sport that people love to watch and play. The professional level of basketball is extremely complicated, making it a great and fun sport. Starting from the early 1900’s and traveling all the way to the 21’st century, basketball has truly evolved from 8 teams to 30 and the NBA adding more rules each year.
Everyday there are more and more measures of player performance in every sport; and basketball is not an exception. Players’ actions are continuously observed in the attempt to break down in pieces the huge complexity of the game.
Turning to the issues related to information handling, the definition of the information management should be mentioned. According to Hinton’s perspective (2006, p.57) the information management is “the conscious process of gathering information”. A brief overview of the presumable information sources in a high-technology company can help to outline the situation. T...
The "pervasive, invasive information infrastructure...is as much a part of our lives as religion was for medieval surfs" (Tetzeli 1994, p. 60). But is it too much? We've all seen the mind-numbing statistics about the exponential growth of information and of technological means of distributing and accessing it. However, some people question whether the problem really is one of overload. One source of the problem is actually the multiplicity of communication channels. Unlike earlier eras, such as when printing presses replaced manuscript copying, new technologies are not replacing older ones but are adding to the host of media choices (Davidson 1996). With these multiple channels the information flow is now simultaneous and multidirectional. However, most traditional information management practices are too linear and specific: they were pipes developed for a stream, not an ocean (Alesandrini 1992). The sheer quantity of information and the speed with which it can be acquired give an illusion of accomplishment (Uline 1996).
Today, our society has access to mankind’s collective knowledge with the internet. Constantly updated, the internet keeps everyone in the loop. If there is a traffic jam, Google Maps will notify you. If there is a new movie release, Fandango will ask to reserve tickets for you. If there is a limited-time sale, Amazon will email you. Information constantly bombards us. The internet moves fast, and we must try to keep up to stay in
Technological advancements within ICT have paved the way to new and innovative methods of how information flows within a business. In the past (and currently), the Bibliographic Chain Model was a prominent source which illustrated and categorised the flow of information from an individual, or a human resource, into various kinds of formats. The main problem with the bibliographic chain, however, is that it was modelled in 1976 (by J.M Doyle and G.H Grimes) which would imply that it is fairly outdated with regards to how technological developments back would have influenced how information circulated.
At the core of Management Information Systems is the ability to process and manage a vital human asset: information. Writing, in its original clay tablet and papyrus forms, is the original management information system, affecting society as a whole, not just through business, but also through government and religion. Writing allowed information to be widely accessible and manageable, beginning a dynamic process in which information lead to technological advances which in turn lead to greater information processing and management tools. At each stage of this process, technology transformed the medium of information: taking it from clay, to ink, to print, to analog, and now to digital. It is in this digital age that information is once again experiencing a renaissance transformation. More than ever, massive amounts of information, in the form of quantitative data and relevant business intelligence, is available to businesses and business partners. This new form of information is known as “big data,” which according to Viktor Mayer-Schonberger and Kenneth Cukier is not merely the ownership of large amounts of data, but also the “ability of society [including businesses] to harness information in novel ways to produce useful insights or goods and services of significant value.” A key example given by Cukier and Mayer in their book Big Data, is the case of the H1NI influenza outbreak in 2009. The U.S. Centers of Desease Control and Prevention (CDC) set out to map all outbreaks of H1N1. In practice, the CDC was able to identify outbreaks, through hospital reports, two weeks after actual events unfolded on the ground. With the help of Google and their data experts however, the CDC was able to locate outbreaks in near real-tim...
In the world today, information is an important aspect in almost every part of our life. From what time the movie we want to see begins to whether we should buy stock in Dell or IBM, we depend on accurate information. Is this kind of information a commodity? The dictionary defines a commodity as something valuable or useful (Webster 1993). Presently, information is a commodity because people are willing to pay high prices for information in order to make better decisions. In this paper, I will give many examples of how information acts as a commodity. I will also show how information acts as a commodity in other areas than just technology and business.
The internet has influenced, and is still influencing the way society communicates in many different ways. The rise of the internet has caused people to communicate differently in areas never dreamed of before the internet came into existence. Education has been revolutionized through the world of the “Information Super Highway”. Medicine has also seen reform as the internet improves research and communication. Individuals are starting businesses from scratch, while others are selling household items for extra cash. This internet “typhoon” sweeping the globe has become a way of life for many individuals all across the globe.
The Impact of ICT on Society I will talk about how ICT has effected people from all walks of life, how it has effected jobs and living conditions. = == == ==
The late 20th century has successfully witnessed the boom of sophisticated technology, which gave birth to a wide range of technological outcomes, including computer technology. Computer technology, that is a skill to manage information, communicate and a kind of entertainment media, has become an important part in modern life at work, in recreation and social networking. Whether computer technology is better or not is a complicated issue. There are different arguments that need to be examined. Most people support that computer technology is better for individual lifestyles. It improves quality of working and study, provides a wide range of entertainment and is a wonderful tool of communication. On the other hand, others believe that computer
The Impact of Information Technology on Individuals, Society and Organizations Information systems and information technology are important in supporting, maintaining and enriching many aspects of livings. They bring benefits to lives of individuals, operations of business and the functioning of society but there are also drawbacks associated with technology and information system. Both good and bad impacts of information system and technology to individuals, organisations and the society will be discussed in detail in the following paragraphs.
Computer technology not only has solved problems but also has created some, including a certain amount of culture shock as individuals attempt to deal with the new technology. A major role of computer science has been to alleviate such problems, mainly by making computer systems cheaper, faster, more reliable, easier to use.
