Working directly with law enforcement, state and local leaders, community-based organizations, private sector and international partners is key to success in the DHS (Strengthening the Homeland Security Enterprise).

DHS has wrestled with a variety of significant challenges, including coordinating across 22 preexisting agencies, reporting to a multitude of congressional committees, and interacting with the U.S. public in a manner that constantly tests the balance between security and privacy (Homeland Security at a Crossroads).

I have friends who work border security in Arizona and they are told to let groups of 20+ go and not report them. If they do they get in trouble and can be suspended, demoted or relocated. They have their hands tied in a lot of areas. When they are threatened and use deadly force they are scrutinized more than a regular police officer in a similar situation. They have restructured the TSA and they do have a Federal Security Director at Homeland Security. Their mission is important in keeping us safe from acts of terrorism while flying or entering the country from Canada, Mexico, Florida or other coastal areas. They have the responsibility to not only find and detect items prohibited on aircraft they have to make sure mail and personnel entering the country aren’t bringing in any contraband.

They had a few slip ups in the past and they were huge. First would be 9/11 and they have tightened security and restructured due to this event. The second is an employee published the full TSA operations manual online without it being redacted. It stated everything they do to

protect the homeland. Everything from how prosthetics and wheelchairs are searched to hat gauge of wire can be detected in a scanner. It wasn’t a good thing and allowed the world insight into how they conduct business. They can change some things but others are unchangeable and now knowledge to the world.
