For this week’s forum we were asked to choose 5 research topics relating to homeland security list them, explain why we are interested in them, and tell the class what we would like to learn if we were writing a paper on them. I chose the topics I did because It seems like to me like most people look at the Department of homeland Security (DHS) and mainly focus on the subjects of border and port physical security without knowing exactly how much goes into ensuring the security of the American people. The topics I chose to list after poking around the internet a little are as follows.
- Human Trafficking. I would have to say that my interest in human trafficking stems from research I’ve done in the past. I found it particularly interesting that the DHS has launched and maintains campaigns to aid in the prevention, of human trafficking, as well as raise awareness, victim assistance, training, and law enforcement investigations. If I was writing a paper on the effects or relation of human trafficking on homeland security, I would look to further enhance my knowledge on the prevalence, causes, and consequences of

nonconsensual exploitation. - International Relations.
and engagements. My interest in International relations and engagements comes from my time working in the Civil Affairs field in the Marine Corps. While working as a Civil Affairs Marine I learned just how detrimental to internal defense international relations and engagements with the public can be. The assistance and support of foreign, and border countries can make or break significant cross border operations, both overt and clandestine type work. I also find it interesting how little emphasis many agencies put on working to better repour with average citizens that could offer valuable information and greatly assist in any type of long term programs or investigations. If I were to write a paper on this subject I would want to focus on learning about current and past international operations/programs that DHS has carried
out. - Transportation Security. While I personally believe this is one of the more commonly thought of sectors of homeland security I still find it interesting because it’s such a broad area to research and address. With modern forms of transportation making it so easy for people to enter our country it’s obvious why we need to focus a lot of resources towards rock solid transportation security programs, both proactive and reactive to prevent future catastrophic events. If I wrote a paper about Transportation Security I would focus on past breaches in Transportation Security and how they may have been prevented. - Homeland Security and Disaster response. In my opinion this would be another area many people overlook. It is so very important to have programs in place to deal with disaster aftermath. While FEMA may carry out much direct disaster relief, it’s important to remember that we are very vulnerable to large scale attacks from both internal and external sources after a disaster. I would want to learn more about the economic damage that can occur post disaster. I would look to further educate myself of programs in place to respond to disasters. - Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in relation to Homeland Security. I find this interesting because the current social climate in the United States can cause severe backlash if someone remotely believes there has been a violation of these rights/liberties. It is very important for both local law enforcement agencies and federal organizations to have proper training and an unfettered understanding that there is no reason to brush the Civil Liberties and Civil Rights of citizens to the side. If I wrote a paper on this subject I would probably focus on past situations where rights were violated, and situations where false claims of violations where disproven.
Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5 directly relates to the National Incident Management System and the National Response Framework. In fact, it directly correlates with their missions. HSPD-5 was the directive that needed to start things in motion; NIMS and the NRF are the aftermath of the directive. With the formation of NIMS and soon after the NRF, America can operate successfully under one national manage...
Chapter 1-3 showed the beginnings of homeland security and the expansion and growth of Homeland Security. Chapter 4 shows the actions of homeland security, and the steps they take toward a problem to access it. The DHS above all needs to realized and understand how to address an attack quickly and efficiently, and have counter measure put into place beforehand. The DHS must be able to access the risks of any situation, and must decipher the potential hazard the situation could cause. When looking at the many functions of the DHS, nothing could be more important than the ability to understand or hinder or stop an attack man made or not. First Homeland Security studies the nature of the risk; this means that they study what is likely to happen in a certain situation. The texted explains risk as what can go wrong. A cigarette smoker takes a risk every time he lights up, and everyone take a risk when getting into a car. The DHS takes what they know from prior circumstances to determine the reality of the risk; the department must also anticipate any attack even without prior knowledge to the circumstance. The main questions of risk assessment are easy to understand, questions like will people be injured or harmed. But when looking at chapter 1 which asks the reader to look further into why terrorist commit terrorism, that’s when its easier to see the DHS skill at risk assessment. For example if you understand that a terrorist attack could be coming from radical Islamist terrorist; then you would understand a risk by understanding their motive behind the attack like their religious holidays. The DHS uses a three-fold method for risk assessment and they are threat, vulnerability and consequence. The Rand organization uses th...
How does the creation of the Department of Homeland Security affect resources traditionally designated for local criminal justice organizations?
The general topic for this literature review will be an examination of the Department of Defense and the National Guard in terms of Homeland Security. The areas of Homeland Defense and Civil Support will be primary subsections of Homeland Security which will be reviewed. For purposes of defining a time period none of the literature reviewed will be prior to September 11, 2001. The reasoning for this being to examine Homeland Defense using literature pertaining to 9/11 and the Boston Marathon Bombing, and Civil Support using literature pertaining to Hurricane Katrina.

Homeland Security’s mission is “to secure the nation from the many threats we face. With honor and integrity, we will safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.”[3]
I plan on first discussing Antonella Arthin’s topic of human trafficking. What is the topic of the book? Antonella Arhins’s topic is the relation/correlation between the diasporic community playing into the frequency of human trafficking and those individuals being exploited for labor. What is her research question? Her research question is: what role does the diasporic community play within the human trafficking practice and the role of exploitive labor?
Homeland security entities are proactive in the fight against terrorism on American soil. Their mandate is to collect information relating to potential attacks and analyze it to find a solution to the danger. With this in mind, these entities employ numerous spying techniques to collect intelligence for safeguarding of the nation. Homeland security entities have spies in almost all the countries in the world, especially those that show aggression towards America. The main aim of these spies is to carry out espionage to determine threat levels and find ways of neutralizing threats (Randol, 2009). This involves deployment of secret agents to areas or countries that exhibit terrorism activity in a bid to collect information. The spies interact with local people and members of terrorist groups using aliases that enable them conceal their identities.
Homeland security is the way Americans put forth the effort to ensure the homeland is safe, secure, and stands firm against terrorist acts and other hazard that could put the health and welfare of the American people. The mission of the Homeland Security is to prevent terrorism, secure and protect our open borders, uphold all immigration laws, safeguard and secure cyberspace, and be content and resilient when it pertains to disasters.
This memorandum is to discuss the Department of Homeland Security, i.e., it?s existence, individual rights under the Constitution, structure, management and retention of the department.
Finally, I would like to discuss the social justice issue of human trafficking and the way that my personal values inform my actions within my future activism against human
The first area is the Department of Homeland Security’s mission. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created in 2002 by the Homeland Security Act. In 2003 the DHS started their operations. The DHS primary responsibilities and objectives includes prevention, protection, and response to issues that threaten national security. There are five core missions that define the DHS: Managing and securing our nation’s borders, strengthening security initiatives to help prevent terrorism, administering and enforcing the nation’s immigration laws, ensuring that the nation can rebound fast and or prevent disasters, and ensuring the internet is secure by instituting safeguards that protect the nation against cyber-attacks. (TWH, 2003)
Col. Randy Larson, renown author and Director of the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Center, speaks on an in-depth prospective of the field of homeland security and factors that drive the continued efforts to address future threats to the nation for the 21 century. The area of focus presented in the interview are the various ways an individual may enter the field but are not limited to a particular area of study. For example, health care, agriculture, or political science, there is essential no set track for finding a career in homeland security. Challenges surrounding area of homeland security are the mounting financial burdens and the need for the appointment of leadership at a national executive level to address this realistic future threat. Despite these concerns, evidence suggests quality system practices can assist in guiding theses area and the adoption of tools that support quality improvement when addressing homeland security and future concerns.
An intelligence research specialist in Homeland Security is an information analyst who monitors data, identifies potential threats and provides response recommendations. Intelligence research analysts must know how to quickly recognize red flags and interpret complex clues to efficiently identify threat possibilities. They create and disseminate intelligence reports to various federal agencies.
Terrorism will happen again regardless of how prepared the U.S. thinks it may be. This means that it is the country’s job to ensure that there is a continuation of measures that should be taken to fight against terrorism. Others believe that the U.S. is fully prepared for another terrorist attack and that enough has been done. The question at hand is, should the U.S. still be concerned about terrorism. The United States needs to be concerned about terrorism to prevent tragedies like 9/11 from happening again, to address problems with domestic terrorism, and to improve homeland security.
