How can one truly change the world and leave a lasting impact on those around them? In order to accomplish this, one must put others first and serve them in a way that benefits them uniquely in their journey through life. There are many important parts of life as a person grows and matures, but assisting others is by far the most important. Serving others can include an array of activities and duties ranging from protecting them from harm, to helping them get through their afflictions or even strengthening their faith. Russ Bateman lived his life in a way that demonstrated the importance of serving others, doing this through his own experiences, civic duty, and faith. Many people do not recognize the importance of helping others. Growing up on a small farm as a child, Russ did not have anything handed to him. “Work was very …show more content…
The church within society has always been at the forefront of serving others. “We had a program at our church called RU where we would help people struggling with addiction to get help and find answers in the word of God,” said Russ (23 Jan. 2017). Addiction can be a painful, presenting a roadblock to whomever may succumb to it. This makes helping people that struggle with it all the more important. Serving people with this struggle should be a top priority in the lives of everyone simply because a few hours of time can have a profound difference on that individual and their family. Any effort to help anyone that is suffering is a great act of kindness that makes the world a little better, one person at a time. The significance of this kind of work is enormous and further progresses the idea that serving others is the most important aspect in life. Programs through the church, much like RU, allow people that have a large emphasis on faith in their life to demonstrate this and have a positive impact on their
“Making a Difference” by June Callwood is an expository essay created to inspire the reader to make a change in the world around them, and to stand up for what they believe in. By just doing simple, positive things, people can make a huge impact on their lives and the lives of people around them. June Callwood, author of “Making a Difference”, changes the way many people see the world by describing scientific research and telling the stories of people who performed small, random acts of kindness that made a huge difference in people’s attitudes and the community around them.
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
The number one book sold for over a decade, seizing to be a fad or a trend has been the Bible. In a study of New York prisoners, studies found that those who participated in a Prison Fellowship Bible Study were rearrested drastically less compared to the amount of prisoners those whom did not. Of those who took part in the Bible study, 14 percent were rearrested within one year, compared to those who choose to not participate was 41 percent. In a similar case, at a Texas prison, out of 80 prisoners who took part in the Prison Fellowship, a whopping five percent are back in prison. In a Public Health Service, which is strongly Christian oriented, done of Teen Challenge’s Drug treatment program, by a Northwestern University doctoral student, it was found that it was more effective with the participants than that of its counterparts. With these examples, it becomes credible that with faith-based programs long term results are received, which further exemplifies my position upon the integration of Christian faith into the homeless shelter environment.
There are countless people who aspire to help people in their lives. However, if you think about it, nearly every career helps others in some way, shape, or form. Teachers, scientists, policemen and various other careers aid people in different ways. I, like many others, have always known that I’ve wanted to help people. Yet, I also want to do more than that. I want to help others, but also save others- emotionally or physically, mentor others, inspire others, and be there for others during their most vulnerable times. This is who I am- and I have always been this person. In first grade, I ran a lemonade stand at my school for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; I got my third grade class to raise money for starving children; and I put up with bullying throughout middle school because I befriended a girl who had trouble making friends on her own. The quality of pure selflessness and care for others that I have always possessed would allow me to do something great with my life- it just took me some time to figure out what.

For many, the 12 Step programs have been the best answer to addiction. In this authors opinion, it really is God who gets miserable alcoholics and addicts clean anyway. Though human beings have physical bodies, and live in a material world: "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." Human beings may be a complex mass of neurological pathways: but we are persons - not rats! We may be deeply frustrated, or disappointed, or wounded. Though we may suffer terribly, we do have an infinite capacity to heal, to achieve, to love and be loved, to create and to contribute! No one deserves the misery of addiction. "There is one who has all power, that one is God: may you find Him now!"
Indeed, I can honestly say that my understanding and knowledge of addiction counseling has increased exponentially. The work performed in this class on the Biblical Word Study and the 12 STEPS program has given me a detailed introduction into this perplexing, multi-dimensional, continual process of addiction counseling. Honestly, I have to admit that in many regards to this scope of counseling I was completely ignorant and thought like many others that addiction is a choice and why can’t people just stop. After this paper I have a new appreciation for the helping profession and those struggling for sobriety. My ultimate goal is to allow God to mold me for His use and purpose to reach and introduce souls to my Savior; allowing Him to make their lives whole through me.
There remains this experience in my mind that I need to write about that actually inspired me in countless behaviors in reference to service and self. I consider relationships concerning those in the helping field and those obtaining aid stands as particularly vital; hence, I believe I must direct focus on this concept. I resolved to enter this discipline because I wanted to give back to those in the community in need. One day I was speaking with a counselor at Centaur who happened to tell me about the significance of connecting to clients, and she expressed to me that I should pay homage to those who accept the “gift” of service because without them, we would not possess the zeal to accomplish authentic behaviors approaching community service. I realized these were true words of wisdom because when I thought about it, I realized my actions were not just about those that I helped but how I helped myself. Thus, in my opinion, these connections were essentially interactions that were in effect a “gift” that could be passed on. I am not just here to help and individual, I am here to create notable connections that would present the motivation to others to also aid those in need and bolster the
From her publication of “Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum”, it is apparent that Aemilia Lanyer skilfully constructs her authority as an author in both her dedications to noblewomen and also her readers. Lanyer published “Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum” in 1611. This was a profound pursuit for a female in the early 17th century as eduaction and literary were largely male dominated with little emergence of female authored texts. She was the first Englishwoman to declare herself as a professional poet, which during this period was remarkable in itself. As Schnell states “the mere publication of the book “Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum” constitutes Lanyer as an exceptional women in the early 17th century” (26), this is supported by Barroll’s opinion that “her book

The churches in the world play a huge role in the determination to access of food, clean water, and shelter. No matter what religious affiliation, people will donate money to churches to help this growing problem that has arisen. This is important because churches are a good way to give those in need the supplies they need. The churches give the money raised by the offerings that people donate. This is effective because there are so many churches around the world. If most people donate a little bit of money, a substantial amount of people will be helped. The Christ House is a p...
One of our deepest needs as humans is to be valued. The need to be needed is often more powerful than the need to survive. Every one of us has a deep longing to write our signature on the world. As individuals, we are each equipped with unique gifts and talents to share with our family, our community, and our world. Nelson Mandela once said, "As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." When we open ourselves to become all that we were created to be, we allow those around us to be themselves, empowering them to be a unique individual and to use the talents they possess. It doesn't matter if we are brilliant, beautiful, or incredibly charismatic. We can make a difference by just being who we are. We simpl...
Aesop once stated, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” In this time period, many people around the globe only focus on their life, and they do not focus on lifting others up. Kindness is one word that can change lives, even when the person that shows kindness doesn’t even know the impact they are making. One act of kindness does not appear to be very important, but every act makes an impact. The world is full of hatred, war, and terrorism, but anybody can start to make a change. Some reasons that any act of kindness has an impact include other people needing positivity, the start of a chain reaction, and the benefit of other people in the world.
