Communication is an essential part of relating to people. One form of communication is handwriting. However, in this digital age, people’s reliance on technology for communication has caused their handwriting’s clarity to deteriorate.
In spite of the major effort that has been expended to bring about a paper-free society, a very large number of paper-based documents are processed daily by computers all over the world in order to handle, retrieve, and store information. The problem is that the manual process used to enter the data from these documents into computers demands a great deal of time and money (Bortolozzi, de Souza Britto Jr., Oliveira and Morita, n.d.). These documents need to be processed for certain reasons which depends on the

The task of handwriting recognition is the transcription of handwritten data into a digital format. The goal is to process handwritten data electronically with the same or nearly the same accuracy as humans (Gunter, n.d). Basically, handwriting can be divided into two categories, cursive script and printed handwriting both with different ways of recognition (off-line or on-line). Accuracy is the main problem in handwriting recognition for both categories because of the similar strokes and shapes some letters may possess. The software may have an inaccurate recognition of the letter, considering the possibility of the handwriting being illegible or some other factors. One notable problem that makes this task difficult especially in cursive handwriting recognition is the fact that there may be no obvious character boundaries (the start and end of a character), compared to printed handwriting, it does not have gaps or spaces between each letter to know the start and stop of recognition per character. This problem makes the recognizer prone to errors that lead to inaccurate …show more content…
A lot of developers applied their studies to online handwriting recognition (which means that the text is encoded with the use of a stylus or other input devices). With the advancement of touchscreen technology and smartphones today, most developers create these online handwriting software for these devices. According to a review on androidwidgetcenter.com, the Android application named “MyScript Stylus” is the HR available so far, for smartphones. It supports 54 languages, cursive English recognition and right to left languages. It allows real-time text input in touchscreen devices. The accuracy recognition rate for online HR is high enough because it analyzes some details that offline HR could not analyze, namely the pen lifts, the weight of the pen during writing and others. It is also important to consider the handwriting styles of people and the tools that will be used in writing. There are some studies in which researchers have developed online HR or offline HR in printed style of penmanship. However, this study will focus on offline cursive handwriting recognition. The highest recognition rate known for offline HR is equal to 87.68% and can be considered one of the highest performances among the state-of-the-art approaches for offline cursive handwriting word recognition. Also, other offline HR which are tested against IAM database
Kutcher claims, “We haven’t lost romance in the digital age, but we may be neglecting it, in doing so, acquainted art forms are taking on new importance. The power of a handwritten letter is greater than ever. It’s personal and deliberate and means more than e-mail or text ever will. ’’(96)Handwriting is different and unique for each individual. You can look at the letter and judge how much effort a person put into writing it.
With the swarm of technology, handwriting, a vital skill, may be on the brink of extinction, despite that it is able to create a “model citizen, assimilate immigrants, and even reform juvenile delinquents” (Korper). Believe it or not: handwriting is important. However, the debate about handwriting is still questionable. Handwriting allows for effective memory retention and is an significant and unique action to develop certain regions of your brain (Grossberg). However, handwriting is also outdated and lacks the agility of the keyboard (Korper). Nonetheless, some of these positive aspects of handwriting are largely due to the ‘drill’ factor emphasized in the Palmer Method of handwriting used present day (Korper).
In the modern era, the use of computer technology is very important. Back in the day people only used handwriting on the pieces of paper to save all documents, either in general documents or medical records. Now this medical field is using a computer to kept all medical records or other personnel info. Patient's records may be maintained on databases, so that quick searches can be made. But, even if the computer is very important, the facility must remain always in control all the information they store in a computer. This is because to avoid individuals who do not have a right to the patient's information.
Completeness: All documents are identified with a unique number and have a numerical sequence checked.
In The Power of Writing by Joel Swerdlow, we are presented to the importance of writing to our civilization. Throughout the years written information has emerged as a primary method of communication. Individuals use whatever is available to write to convey their message. Early forms of writing include carving symbols in stone and bone, written leaves, silk, papyrus, parchment and paper. At the present time writing is used in many settings; for example we have books, text messages, online blogs, lyrics, street signs and emails. There are no limits to written information, and most importantly it can be preserved indefinitely. Writing helps me communicate to others, my identity, creativity and imagination. Individually, I use writing to compose lyrics, write about my personal experiences and to connect with my family. In my opinion, writing is an important tool of communication in my personal and professional development, because it gives an insight of my individual ideas.
Paper is the staple of my existence (no pun intended). From when I was six and spent my days filling pads with fantastical designs for houses, zoos, and factories, to the present, when I surround myself with sheets bearing drafts of essays on one side and systems of equations on the other, my life has been ruled by this ruled substance — simple, utile, and ubiquitous.
Handwriting is an important part of education. Many states require essay tests in which content is more important than handwriting or even spelling. But those essays still need to be legib...
Numerous intellectuals have debated on the effects that typography has on the mind. An example of two such intellectuals are Walter Ong and Neil Postman. In Walter Ong’s “Writing is a Technology that Restructures Thought” he describes the difference between oral and typographic cultures and the resulting effects each had on the mind while in Chapter 4 of Postman’s “Amusing Ourselves to Death” similarly focuses on how typography has molded the way that we think, which has become very structured and writing-like, and how that effects public discourse. Overall, both their pieces serve to demonstrate how typography arrogates itself into our lives and is forever embedded in our conscious and unconscious mind, which illuminates how technology is
What happened to the pen and paper quality of literacy? Traditional elements such as the pen and paper method has been changed due to the advancement of technology the quality of learning has been digitized to fit this day and age. “Just as the nature of and expectation for literacy has changed in the past century and a half, so has the nature of writing. Much of that change has been due to technological developments from pen and paper, to typewriter, to word processor to network computer, to design software capable of com...

Maria Konnikova states in her article “What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades” that “[I]n alexia, or impaired reading ability, some individuals who are unable to process print can still read cursive, and vice versa.” This fact proves how vital at least a few lessons on cursive writing could be. Children suffering from various learning disabilities will be more successful if they are taught more ways to succeed. For some children cursive will be a real challenge and they would much prefer to use standard writing. For others, cursive will help them remember things more

Computer has made the life easier by providing various applications and technologies. For example, while computer has replaced typewriter, it helps the students to become a better writer as they can “revise text, rearrange paragraphs, and experiment with the tone and shape of an essay” () while using word processing. Thus, the computer helps the students to improvise their writing. Human relationship with co...
Speech recognition is a computer application that lets people control a computer by speaking to it. In other words, rather than using a keyboard and mouse to communicate with the computer, the user speaks commands into a microphone that is connected to a computer. By speaking into the microphone, users can do two things. First, they can tell their computers to execute some commands such as open a document, save changes, delete a paragraph, even move the cursor, all without touching a key. Second, users can write using speech recognition in conjunction with a standard word processing program. When users speak into the microphone their words can appear on a computer screen in a word processing format, ready for revision and editing.
Handwritten signatures happens in different patterns and there is a great deal of dissimilarity signatures of people even of the same area with same language. Some used to just write their name while others follow certain pattern to represent their signature. Signatures done with complexity are however less vulnerable to forgery effects [7]. Also, the signatures are very much influenced by the thinking panorama of a person. There is a particular process on how a signature s generated. Signature has three attributes at minimum . They are pattern form, movement and variation, and since the signatures are produced by moving a pen on a paper, movement of pattern is the most important
