The task of handwriting recognition is the transcription of handwritten data into a digital format. The goal is to process handwritten data electronically with the same or nearly the same accuracy as humans (Gunter, n.d). Basically, handwriting can be divided into two categories, cursive script and printed handwriting both with different ways of recognition (off-line or on-line). Accuracy is the main problem in handwriting recognition for both categories because of the similar strokes and shapes some letters may possess. The software may have an inaccurate recognition of the letter, considering the possibility of the handwriting being illegible or some other factors. A lot of developers applied their studies to online handwriting recognition (which means that the text is encoded with the use of a stylus or other input devices). With the advancement of touchscreen technology and smartphones today, most developers create these online handwriting software for these devices. According to a review on androidwidgetcenter.com, the Android application named “MyScript Stylus” is the HR available so far, for smartphones. It supports 54 languages, cursive English recognition and right to left languages. It allows real-time text input in touchscreen devices. The accuracy recognition rate for online HR is high enough because it analyzes some details that offline HR could not analyze, namely the pen lifts, the weight of the pen during writing and others. It is also important to consider the handwriting styles of people and the tools that will be used in writing. There are some studies in which researchers have developed online HR or offline HR in printed style of penmanship. However, this study will focus on offline cursive handwriting recognition. The highest recognition rate known for offline HR is equal to 87.68% and can be considered one of the highest performances among the state-of-the-art approaches for offline cursive handwriting word recognition. Also, other offline HR which are tested against IAM database
