This idea is being overlooked today due to the fact that society is becoming more self centered. Beings that empathy is overlooked, many feel that it is no longer needed and unvaluable. When people disregard empathy, the quality of conversations tend to take a steep decline. This topic as a whole needs to be used daily because it is extremely beneficial to personal connections. Empathy is necessary in everyday communication for that it makes the conversation more intriguing, and altogether shows that people in today’s society still care one way or another. Empathy is valuable because it gives oneself a better understanding of others, benefits everyday social relationships, and promotes the ability to generate an emotion that would go unnoticed otherwise.
Empathy gives people a better understanding of other no matter the situation at hand. When having a conversation face to face, the person will express various emotions in the duration of the conversation. In order for someone to better explain one’s feelings, they have to have an attentive audience. If the listener does not make an effort to empathize with the one having the problem, a person will almost immediately end the conversation there. The lack of reaction in online interactions or even in person conversations puts pressure on a person. For instance, people with no form of social outlets to communicate or express themselves tend to have emotional distress overtime. This distress can be halted if someone can take the time and listen to that person. People can interact with each other on a daily basis, but not gain anything from these connections. One will have to be active in a conversation to gain the social benefits. A large part of this activeness comes from empathy, but there are many small parts to this idea. For instance, to really express empathy, one will not only listen to the person but maintain all the information given to them at one time. This idea may seem scary to some due to the various escapes provided to them by social media, but it will be well worth it. Experiences gained by showing empathy will lead to resolving problems in the future. Eventually, if the person leaves a conversation with the one they were talking with at least, then both parties will leave with a more positive outlook on life. The new age of social media has given people the ability to take the easy way out when it comes down to initiating conversations. Most of today’s generation would rather use applications or other forms of media to satisfy the need for socialization than putting a foot forward and meeting new people. According to Arianna Huffington in the article “Empathy: What We Need Now”, during hardships and instability of society, empathy is needed to find solutions to those issues. Huffington writes about how empathy is needed in our country in order to produce a positive social change. She begins by giving an example of a movement that Martin Luther King created and how empathy was a part of this movement. King as well spoke of how empathy is the sign of living. To become involved in the situations of humanity in order to improve it, displays that empathy is the core of a human’s existence.
