Nothing ever stays constant and the same is true for social media, the rules are always changing and it is easy to slip beneath the cracks if one is not on guard. The rules that the girls experience on Instagram stem from a need to be seen and the pressure surrounding the stage of life that they are in. Social media for them includes a social hierarchy achieved through carefully constructed comments and the number of likes that they can receive on a picture. The rules also place expectations on the girls support group and future potential friends through an exchange of comments and likes. However, there is no guarantee that what the girls are practicing now will be what they practice a year from now and there is no guarantee that they will be using Instagram. When they communicate with people on Facebook they do not take into consideration how other people may feel about what they are saying and they are occasionally self-centered. I feel as though more and more teens of this generation are using social media in order to seek approval of attention of others. Since they are expected to use social media in a way to create an online audience, they post pictures of themselves and activities so that they can get a “yes” or “no” response from their audience. If someone posts a picture online and someone who is considered a “friend” makes a positive comment on the photo, then they have received approval of their actions. If someone makes a negative remark on the photo, then they have received disapproval. She uses various examples of how young adults use social media to create a persona of themselves, such as when girls post sexualized pictures of themselves and create avatars of themselves (Orenstein, 448). This means that how they are seen online will affect how they act in real life. Instagram also provides the option to report a picture if it is too “intimate.” Titlow also points out that girls post pictures laying in bed and boys post pictures of themselves shirtless in front of a mirror. In the past 20 plus years the world has encountered many changes. One of the biggest changes has to be the world of media. Magazines, T.V.s, cameras, radios, computers, cell phones, and many more kinds of technology, that are used as media outlets, have transformed and been created. Perhaps two of the biggest transformations have been the creation of magazines and eventually social media websites. Magazines have gone from being paperback to digital then social media networks came into play. With these new transformations in media people have changed with them. Perhaps trying to fit in with what they see being portrayed or trying not to get left behind in society. Whatever the case may be people have begun to change for, what seems like, good and bad. Today there are hundreds of social media websites including: blogs, dating sites, social networks, media sharing, and social news. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
Facebook, Twitter and the plethora of other social networking websites have changed the way people communicate with each other. That is an indisputable fact. Personal communication used to be about one-on-one interaction—whether it’d be in person or over the phone. Even group reunions used to be about one-on-one. If you had a story to tell you would have a specific audience who was listening to you; you were aware of who they were. Facebook changed that. Now personal communication involves photos, statuses, and likes and very little one-on-one. When a photo is posted it is shown to all your friends, and depending on your privacy settings, to even more people. Therefore, your story was transmitted to a large group of people, most of who know very little about the context of the photo. After all, these images and words put up there are what we consciously choose as what we want people to see. As discussed in visual rhetoric, a photo is only but an instant, a very limited snapshot, of everything else in the real world image. The question remains: is this change good or bad?
Technology has been and will continue to be an essential part of human life. Information technology is a revolution that has taken the whole world captive. Everyone around the globe is trying either to conform or catch up with the ever changing and improving technologies without having a second thought of its impact on their lives. The internet is the ground-breaking invention of the twenty first century, leading to the mushrooming of the social media and other communication platforms.
