Here we are, a one-way conversation from me to you. This use of language - writing - proves communication is not limited to speaking verbally. Language evolves and embodies the changes in a society and its cultures. In the United States, there is no official language and in its past, the diversity of immigrants has made it difficult for all people to speak the same tongue. Language comes in all dialects, accents, fluencies, and tones, and it is passed down from generation to generation. Although, you have to admit that sometimes in a conversation, words go through one ear and right out the other, and you stand there nodding away, hoping the other person doesn’t realize you have absolutely no idea what they just said. Brittny Mejia, author of the article, “ 'You need to speak English': Encounters in viral videos show Spanish is still polarizing in the U.S.” explores the current contradictory impulses that the Spanish language has brought to America. Mejia describes how a young girl was shunned for having spoken to her mother in Spanish while out in public. Her family had been told that since they live in America, they should be speaking English (Mejia). The family ignored the warning and continued using both Spanish and English. In the past, people were scorned for speaking multiple languages, but ironically now, parents want their kids to be bilingual. There are countless families that “enroll their children in bilingual charter schools” in order to learn Spanish specifically to have the advantage in the job market (Mejia). Children are taught that being bilingual is an extraordinary trait and is something that they should take advantage of by making it their second tongue. Language continues to evolve with our culture and grow with our children and can be very surprising or even confusing when different generations learn exactly how much language has shifted in the relatively short amount of time between age
Gloria Anzaldua, wrote the essay “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” communicating and describing her adolescence in a society brimming with sexism, cultural imperialism, racism, low self-esteem, and identity formation. The reason one comes to America is to finer themselves academically, and intellectually. One must learn to speak English to live among the American’s, because that is the language they speak. Though, no one has the right to deprive you of your familiar tongue. At a young age, Anzaldua was scolded, even mistreated for speaking her native “Chicano” tongue. Anzaldúa described this ignorance, cruelty, and discrimination when she states: “I remember being caught speaking Spanish at recess – that was good for three licks on the knuckles with a sharp ruler.” She overcomes this hostility throughout her life.
Language is an important part of who we are. It influences the way we think and behave on a great scale. However, sometimes it is forced upon us to go in different directions just so we can physically and mentally feel as if we belong to the society in which we live in. Just as we see in Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” and Richard Rodriguez’s “A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood”, both authors faced some challenges along the way by coping with two different languages, while still trying to achieve the social position which they desired.
Bilingualism should be celebrated and encouraged, rather than stamped out. Anzaldúa recalls that a teacher told her, “If you want to be American, speak ‘American.’ If you don’t like it, go back to Mexico where you belong” (2947). The irony in her teacher’s statement is that Mexicans and Native Americans inhabited North America long before it was colonized; so, technically speaking, Anzaldúa belonged in America more than her teacher did.
Throughout Richards early childhood development he quickly understood that in order to succeed in America he would have to learn to confidently speak in English. Richard is Hispanic American and although he was born in America, Spanish was the only language that he was exposed to as a young child. He grew up in a home where Spanish flowed freely, but he soon realized outside of his home the language that he primarily knew was foreign. His parents spoke fluent Spanish along with all of his relatives. The brief encounters he experienced of his parents speaking English were only in public places and the proficiency was very poor. Rodriguez’s home was as a safety net for him and his Spanish speaking family with they are his only real connections to the outside world. While reading this article one of the most shocking sections were when the students were talking to Monzó and sharing their outlook on their place and their language’s place in society. These students even at this early age are feeling how devalued their first language has been. They feel like they have to speak the right* English, only use English in public places, never their first language, and that they must assimilate to the American culture as much as possible. This reminded me of a chapter in Lippi-Green (2012)’s text. Within this chapter Lippi-Green (2012) discusses how in the United States Spanish speakers are not only expected to learn English but they are expected to learn and utilize the right* English determined by the majority and assimilate entirely to American culture. Throughout Monzó and Rueda (2009)’s text the children in conversations expressed their observation of the social order in relation to language and race. As a child Anzaldua remembers being caught speaking Spanish, and being punished for that reason. In college Anzaldua and other Chicanos were required to take speech classes. Their purpose: to get rid of the accent that followed the Chicanos and other Hispanic-Mexican kids around. Bilingual education offers a completely different world for students of different ethnic background and thus creates a comfort zone limiting the risk-taking factor necessary for the maturation of a child to an adult. Rodriguez argues supporters of bilingualism fail to realize "while one suffers a diminished sense of private individuality by becoming assimilated into public society, such assimilation makes possible the achievement of public individuality" (Rodriguez 26). In the article, “Public and Private Language”, Richard Rodriguez argues that bilingual education delays learning a “public language” and developing a public identity”. I can relate to Richard’s story because my family and me moved to America when I was young and we also had the same struggle learning a new language. Most of my recent communication relationships have been with my husband, my children, friends, and fellow worshipers. To start with, I do not want to narrowly define language as merely verbal communication. Language is far broader than that. In a few seconds a person walking past you on the street could tell you more about themselves with a sincere smile than they could with a few rushed words. Language encompasses all aspects of communication that enhance the level of our interaction. The tone in our voice demonstrating our feelings on a topic or our body language indicating our level of interest are just as important in interaction as verbally communicating content. There for I define language as any act that is involved in the interaction between two or more people.
From the past to nowadays, the way of communication can affect a people life seriously. The communication skill of a person may bring his career to a success or a failure. In this world, unless you have become the world last human-being, good communication skill is required for us to achieve a better life and even a better world. Therefore, communication skill is very important for one’s future.
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
