One of the greatest catchers of all time Yogi Berra was once quoted saying, “You can learn a lot by just observing”. Baseball is a very broad sport, and to learn it all is very challenging, so people just stick to mastering a single craft. Catching is one of the most demanding positions on the field and takes a lot of skill and dedication to be a catcher. There are 3 integral components to be a great catcher, which are, throwing consistently, blocking, and having soft hands.
To be a catcher in any level of baseball one of the crucial aspects is throwing, and being able to do it consistently it can either win or lose you a game. Many young baseball players do not understand the importance of throwing. As Richard Feynman states “Then they

wrote down the next sentence and on and on, I was the only one who knew what the professor was talking about, I did not see how they would learn from this” (Pg.55). The form I would teach this skill would be besides lecturing the skill but ask them questions to see how well they grasped the concept. It is highly overseen and although there are many methods to teaching the correct mechanics there is only one flawless way. One of the first things as a player to learn would be to make sure that you have the right release point, which is to release the ball in front of your nose right to where you can see it. Once already mastered the right release point then another thing to teach would be to use the core and leg muscle as these two areas of your body are critical power points and dictate how fast someone can throw the baseball. A way in which I would teach this to the younger kids and even young adolescents would be to use certain drills that will enhance their muscle motor memory and will allow them to remember where and when to throw the ball. Use a more hands on technique that will allow the players to further understand the concept as well as showing videos in which throwing the ball off target has cost teams important games. The showing of the videos will get the players to not only think about this key area but also help them visualize the sole significance and how detrimental it is to a team’s success. Arguably the most important aspect of being a great catcher is the ability to block.
This is the part that is most challenging for most people and separates the mediocre catchers from the greats. If you go back and trace the game of baseball to its roots and the history of all-time great catchers “Pudge” Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, Yogi Berra, etc... Their greatest asset to them was their ability to be a “wall” behind the plate. They had their pitchers complete confidence, whenever the pitcher would be on the mound he knew he could throw any pitch anywhere because they would block that ball and ensure it would not pass them. Way in which I can teach this to them would be by showing them drills that they can practice and do anytime and stress that repetition is very important when it comes to blocking, have a little bit of both because when it comes to blocking it cannot be taught by just verbally telling someone how to do it, it must be shown and applied in order for the person receiving the training to fully comprehend what the goal is. Being a great blocker is as much mental as it is physical. As a catcher the mentality should be “I will do anything to block this ball”, because it can really hurt or help the …show more content…
team. The ability to control the game as a catcher is iatrical in being able to help out your pitcher and as the level of difficulty increases as you get older the more crucial it is to have them.
Being a catcher is the most important position out on the field besides the pitcher, because the catcher has to be able of control every aspect of the game and know what to do when certain situation arises. As Feynman says “You can know the name of the bird in every language and still not know anything about the bird” (pg. 54). Just how you can know exactly what pitch is coming and what play will happen, but if you do not know how to react or what to do in that situation what difference does it make? To teach this would require a more rigorous form of teaching and using some more methods that will instill the importance of how important it is to be the leader out there on the field for your team. Being a catcher is no joke and that is what should be instilled into young ball player’s minds from a young age.
Throughout my years of playing baseball at its highest level I have come across almost very method and learned quite a lot. There have been some methods I agree with and some that I don’t, but overall having a more hands on approach as well as a little bit or virtual learning has always helped more players. Continuing to teach the methods that I learned from will hopefully result in future players thinking of me as a great teacher
nonetheless.
... pitcher in the league. Baseball is one of the best sports to play to keep you active and sharpen your reflexes. Everyone should try playing baseball at least once in their life. Or maybe even learn to just throw a few different kinds of pitches like curveball and knuckleball, incase their children grow up playing baseball.
Every team requires one, and some say it is the hardest position on the field to play. The hind-catcher is without a doubt a necessity to every ball team’s success. This is the position who can take command of the playing field. If played well, one can have a major impact on how smoothly a team plays together and affect the outcome of the game. There are many requirements for the person who plays the role of the catcher: something as simple as being prepared to play the positon, to having the responsibility of making sure the team has a good relationship with each other. However, the most obvious requirement is the athletic ability required and being physically able to play the position. The position of catcher is not an easy position to play, but is essential to the game of baseball.
The researcher has chosen to write this paper on hitting because she has played softball for twelve years and the perfect softball swing has always eluded her. The softball swing is one of the most difficult softball skills to achieve greatness in. There are a number of great hitters all with different batting stances and styles, each one comfortable to them. There are many different tactics and coaching ideas out there to help improve hitting. In fact, there are several videos now on the market to help the softball player perform better. Coaches often teach hitting drills to improve batting techniques and ability. Confidence is an important factor in hitting. If the player lacks confidence then she will not be a good hitter. Softball is not only a physical game but a mental game.
It’s a Sunday afternoon and the whole family is over at grandmother’s house playing a fun game of pickup baseball until they realize they do not know how to hit a baseball. Luckily it is a rather simple process that can easily be taught and learned.
Throwing is a fairly natural activity for a person. Everyone at some point in time has thrown some object at a person. In baseball throwing becomes an art. Throwing a baseball is a relatively easy task, but throwing it accurately and with a high speed is difficult. People who play this sport spend a very long time perfecting their throw.
"Think. Don't just swing. Think about the pitcher, what he threw you last time up, his best pitch, who's up
A dedicated baseball player shows up ready to play and succeed in whatever situation may arise. Baseball is a mental game, and concentration is key to keeping a player mentally prepared. Baseball is both a fast and slow sport, as it is slow between pitches, but very intense during them. During pitches, it is a players time to regroup and think of all the situations that could arise during the next pitch. During the play, everything happens fast, and there is no time to think about what to do, it is all instinct, so the ability to avoid mental errors is crucial.
The most important part of being a good pitcher is throwing strikes. With out that you will not be able to get hitters out and you will walk everyone. To throw strikes you have to have a good wind up and delivery. After you have your fastball mastered you can begin to throw different pitches such as a curveball, change up, or slider.
Throwing a baseball is a lot like throwing any other object. Children grow up throwing things around the house, and it very similar to how you throw a baseball. From a young age, I grew up throwing objects around the house. My father was smart enough to recognize this trend and sign me up for baseball later on when I was much older. To throw a baseball you first need to understand the shape of the object. The baseball has seams around the circumference which are placed around the outer edges of the baseball for added grip. Before we get into the types of pitches and grips, we need to understand the arm and body movement. The movement of your body and arms happens in many steps that follow a fluid form to increase accuracy
Baseball has always been America’s natural past time. Many fans love watching baseball but do not realize how hard it is to prepare for a season. Most fans think the players just show up on the first day. I think this belief is completely false. I feel that preparing for a baseball season requires much preparation. The preparation I use includes working on my swing, working out, and studying other people’s ideas on hitting. These steps are necessary for me to have a successful season. These steps have proven to be a valuable aid in helping me to prepare for the season. I believe these steps are the basic steps to becoming a great baseball player.
Right when I realized it is important for me to not just play for fun, I started to play less video games, and do more Baseball practices. My dad would always tell me it’s not good to play video games, because they cannot help you, but baseball can help you succeed in life. This really changed my view on what Baseball potentially has.
I had played softball in P.E. enough to know the basics…or so I thought. I stood there leaning against my bat listening to Coach McGownd talk. As he talked I began absorbing everything he said. Gone were the days of simply stepping up to the plate to hit. Now, each at bat had a purpose and guidelines to follow in order to maximize the batters chance of successfully hitting the ball. There was so much information—proper stance, proper mechanics, how to set up in the batters box based on what you wanted to do (i.e. bunt, pull the ball, hit opposite, slap hit), and so much more. When Coach McGownd finished giving us our instructions, we shuffled off to our assigned station and began doing our assigned drills. I happily watched as the older, more experienced players took their swings. The sweet pinging of the metal bats against the balls and laughter blanketed the field. I patiently waited as the older players took their turns. When my turn came I picked up my bat, stepped up to the tee and followed along as my brain got its clipboard out and started checking off each step I had just learned. I took my swing and was awarded with a nice popping sound as I made contact with the ball. I knew then, that this sound of the bat making contact with a ball would become one of my favorite sounds. I continued to rotate through the drills enjoying the repetitiveness of the task. Time passed by quickly as I got lost in the
There aren't as many spots needed in baseball which makes it a little more easier and isn't time consuming such as wrestling is. Baseball is more like holding a pitch right and with the correct fluent arm motion. When wrestling is more like shooting a sweeping single and swiping the other leg out placing them on their back or stomach. Batting takes time to learn and lot of it. Its confusing if they drop their elbow on their swing and attack the ball with their hands it will take many reps to fix it. Baseball is where players get a rude awakening. No matter how amazing athletes are or think they are they always have bad technique somewhere. More than likely players will grow up playing that way. Although once they get a little higher it hits them, and it hits them hard. All those bad reps come and hit people by surprise when they got to restart from the beginning.
An important individual structure constraint he experienced was age. His age affects his anticipation of the ball, which increased his chances of flinching and looking away. A younger age can reflect the amount of experience a kid has or confidence he has in himself to complete the catch. His turning away and closing his eyes shows how inexperienced and unconfident he is in himself. It also shows he flinches in anticipation for the ball instead of trying to catch it. An important sociocultural environmental constraint observed in catcher 7’s video is discouraging behaviour. A young child’s ability to catch a ball often “reflects the skill of the thrower in getting the ball to arrive” in the catcher’s outstretched arms (Haywood & Getchell, 2014). If the thrower is having trouble getting a ball to the catcher’s arms repeatedly, then the child will be discouraged form catching any more balls. A younger kid needs positive reinforcement during a difficult or challenging task. Repeated inaccurate throws can discourage a chid from correctly making a catch, as they are unused to a toss that challenges their anticipation and
"I've learned you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back."
