Since the beginnings of humanity, people use the codes of language to communicate and share your lives’ experiences with the next generations. With the advance of technology and the fast network systems to spread this code, the world’s population has gone beyond the borders of its country, increasing the number of new global citizens. Being a global citizen means being conscientious about facts either national or international, external conflicts, technological developments and all kinds of cultural manifestations around the globe. Moreover, this class of citizens share the same practice multilingualism even more, which plays a fundamental role in maintaining the knowledge and spread it to every single person on the Earth. Once, people have started learning a new language, grown their understanding about the importance of being open-minded and the importance to accomplish cultural understanding, and the responsibilities of global citizenship, it is time to take action! To illustrate this, consider a young person who has gone abroad someday. The first step he/she took was to make a little change in his/her head which resulted in a major achievement. Influencing the local environment leads to changes in the global population and people have the skill to bring great opportunities to the both national and international contexts. As well as “There are a number of aspects that a play a role in the moral dimension of global citizenship. One prerequisite is awareness of what is going on outside one’s own direct environment (Bekennen, 2008); a world view where one feels committed to and responsible for others in this world (Hett, 1993).” Being conscientious about the role of multilinguistic people in the world as mentioned before shows that they must be aware of the capacity to influence the whole world, making it a better place to live, raise our children, decrease environmental disasters, and promote good changes to everybody. To sum up, “citizens need to convert all awareness and responsibility into a willingness to take action in order to achieve social justice, equality or ecological sustainability” (Perekh & Biekart, 2009). Given these points, multilingualism here takes a major significance to make the world a better place spreading cultural understanding and global citizenship. When people are willing to help other and change the environment they live, they instantly stop being a passive voice in the humanity and start
Most people who grow up with a foreign language spoken in there house grow up with an advantage in society. Language is a means of communication and it varies from one community to another. Everyone has a mother tongue which depended on the family’s upbringing. A second language can be learned along the way. There are also instances where a person is born in a community that speaks two languages and therefore, had to learn both languages. The quality of the languages learned will be affected by how well the community speaks both languages. This can later develop into a new form of language. The essay describes the frustration of the author who felt rejected by different groups for speaking a different form of language. Her essay aims to gain sympathy from readers by seeing the issue from her point of view. Anzaldua attempts to achieve this in her essay by raising issues on identity and discrimination. She wanted to highlight that language is not determined by a country’s physical borders.
In today’s society, especially in the United States, most people are monolingual English speakers. As a result, these monolingual speakers are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who speak more than one language fluently. This disadvantage is crucial to realize since it is important to learn how individuals and the nation can be enhanced. Multilingual speakers have an advantage in global affairs that involve countries that speak different languages. Speaking multiple languages makes it easier to communicate with people when involved in foreign affairs. Those who speak multiple languages are also more aware of other cultures in society. Monolingual speakers are not as exposed to other cultures and have difficulty understanding or even recognizing them. Furthermore, being multilingual increases your
Global Citizens Firoozeh Dumas calls herself a “global citizen” in her enlightening book. Before reading about Dumas’ experiences, I simply assumed the book would reveal how many different ethnicities she belonged to. However, I found that Dumas is an intelligent and witty Iranian writer from Abadan, Iran, who came to American and married a French man. I would never have thought that one woman could have encompassed so many different cultures in her lifetime. The description of a “global citizen” means that a person is culturally well-rounded; he or she is neither prejudice nor exclusive toward other cultures.
Eventually, immigration lead us to open our minds to new concepts and acceptance for people with different backgrounds, and that is called multiculturalism. Not to mention, that immigrants bring their cultures with them so they can teach others about themselves, which is great because that could help in many ways, especially, in how to contact with people from other countries. As one famous philosopher said, “Appreciation for cultural diversity is essential for our co-existence”. For example, according to (Landeskunde Special) in 2006, societies with so many different languages and cultures tend to have the possibility of learning from people having other heritages. They can exchange experiences, so everyone is able to broaden his mind leading to an intellectual improvement of the society. This example shows how immigration can help us to know about different cultures and habits, and adopt some of those good habits they have. In addition, it is interesting to know about different cultures. For example according to (Qin Wan) in 2006, we will understand and learn from each other easier than before. We can eat different cultural style foods. We can watch different entertaining performances from different countries, and we can enjoy the celebration events of different countries by attending their festivals. Those things could create a peaceful surrounding environment. Multiculturalism can be
From this perspective, for immigrants learning the language of the host country is a tool to develop a net of useful social contacts. Cristina Rodriguez states that in addition to its role in developing social bonds, the language use assists with preserving a multilingual en...
Language is used to preserve and transfer culture and cultural ties. Diverse ideas branch from differing language use within one’s culture and the whole intertwining of these relationships start at one’s birth. I have to agree with Confucius when he said that we are all born exactly the same; it is only once a child is exposed to their surroundings that they become individuals in and of their cultural group. Every individual’s views are dependent on the culture which has influenced them, as well as the language which has been shaped by that culture. The understanding of a culture and its people can be enhanced by the knowledge of their language. And learning a new language involves the learning of a new culture (Allwright & Bailey

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language that goes to his heart.” ‒ Nelson Mandela. Since the 1960’s learning a second language has decreased by 30 percent in today’s society. People who wish to learn an additional language often do so to communicate with people who reside in different countries. With an increase in today’s globalization, it is forcing companies throughout the world to break the language barrier. However, with the advancement of technology, numerous citizens find it unnecessary to learn another language, as a translation is at the tip of their fingers. The methods of learning a foreign language can differentiate between people. Nevertheless it has been
It has been adopted by different sectors making it one of the most used languages in the globe. This has been attributed to its effective nature, easy learning and rich history. However, conservative groups exist who argues that there should be global language since it may cause the emergence of superior cultures. Nevertheless, it is evident that different cultures ranging from the early polish immigrants, the African American community, the advertising and media will greatly benefit from the globalization of the English language. It's not a secret that our world is far from being perfect. But both now and always there are people who want to make it better. Some of them expresses this through the arts, someone tries to take actions. Bit by bit people have changed their mind about world's arrangement, but the main problems still remain. Our community should be ashamed of social differentiation, poverty, and illiteracy, because this is what divides us. However, there are people who unify our world and try to erase these differences. They are kind and responsible, respectful and hard-working. They are well-educated and speak many languages, because knowledge of many languages won't give you much, if you have nothing to say. They are honest and open-minded. They are Global Citizens.
...1). I don’t believe the present multiplicity of languages represent a danger for social cohesion and unity. I believe it should be celebrated. I believe a part of being a nation means climbing hurdles and getting through the challenges as they come. This is a part of a nation’s growth.
In order to visualize the “global” as an adjective in the collocation “global language”, a study has shown the numbers of people speaking the language. According to them, there are about 6000 languages in the world and not surprisingly English is at the top of the list of most dominant. In the world there are 375 million first-language speakers, approximately the same number of second-language speakers and about 750 million foreign-language speakers (David Graddol, The Future of English? A Guide to Forecasting the Popularity of the English Language in the 21st Century. British Council, 1997). According to magazine Economist, more than one billion people speak some form of English. These numbers could make people think that English is really conquering the world which can be both positive and negative.
Moreover a major point in globalization is language which helps connect people together because most people use it in the world. In addition, over a billion people in the world now speak English. According to a report titled, “English Next" by language researcher David Graddol, "...two billion people [will] be speaking or learning English within a decade" Graddol (1997).
As time goes by and as the global community develops, the world grows more and more international, making second or third language acquisition become necessary to the majority. With the growing importance of multiple language ability, more and more parents think of bilingual or multilingual education, which means acquisitions of two or more languages, for their kids. In fact, we do have many reasons showing why multilingual education is important and beneficial, such as aspects of interpersonal relationship, employment, brain health, and so on.
