Behavior is important in learning. Misbehavior is recognized as the greatest threat to pupil’s ability to perform well in school and be successful. Teachers must be experienced and patient in managing pupil’s behavior to maximize the time spent on learning. There are many factors that influenced the values, characteristics, needs, behaviors and personality of the individual. Accordingly the childhood experiences of the individual are contributory to his behavior when he grows as an adult or as an adolescent (Tejada, 2007). Orpilla (2013) mentioned on her study that students who exhibit these maladaptive behaviors throughout the early years of school are more likely to gravitate to other students engaging in negative behaviors, face academic …show more content…
In behavior modification the focus is on changing behavior, while in behavior management the focus is on maintaining order. Behavior management skills are of particular importance to teachers in the educational system. Behavior management include all of the actions and conscious inactions to enhance the probability people, individually and in groups, choose behaviors which are personally fulfilling, productive, and socially acceptable. Behavior management has been and still is the chief concern of educators/teachers. When the pupils misbehave, they learn less and keep their peers from learning. Behavior management planning must occur at three levels as shown in Figure 1 below. The smallest circle relates to the implementation of individualized behavior management supports for the most troubled students. Traditionally, behavior management training in special education has occurred at the individualized level. The middle circle is handled from a classroom perspective and includes effective instructional supports. Behavioral and academic programming is key aspects in the prevention of and reaction to problem behavior in the classroom. The largest circle represents schoolwide support to design to prevent and respond to behavior difficulties at the school level. These concentric circles are dependent on one another and form a comprehensive approach to behavior
Having a well thought-out comprehensive behavior management plan, and well- designed lesson plans, which addresses the various learning styles of the students in the class and gets all the students engaged in the learning activity.
Special education includes addressing students’ academic needs as well as their behavioral needs. A student with a disability is not exempt from disciplinary measures, as students with can suspended and even expelled from the school environment. More specifically, students with emotional disturbance can display maladaptive behaviors. These maladaptive behaviors can generate unsafe learning environments. More importantly, the creation of an effective behavior intervention plan (BIP) is imperative. The development of a BIP can aid in the reduction of maladaptive behaviors, thus decrease the likelihood of a suspension or expulsion. My current role as a special education program specialist permits the
A behavioral intervention plan (BIP) is designed for a specific child to try to help that child learn to change her or his behavior. Once the function of a student 's behavior has been determined, the Individual Education Program (IEP) Team should develop the behavior intervention plan A behavioral intervention plan can be thought of as a plan to support the student in order to help him or her change behavior. Effective support plans consist of multiple interventions or support strategies and are not punishment. Positive behavioral intervention plans increase the acquisition and use of new alternative skills, decrease the problem behavior and facilitate general improvements in the quality of life of the individual, his or her family, and
In this paper I will be comparing and contrasting three researched based articles regrading positive Behavior Support (PBS). PBS is a method of inhibiting maladaptive behaviors by teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors (Lynnette, Young, & Marchant, 2004). This method is critical in helping students with behavior disorders be able to learn in a classroom environment. A student that have a behavior disorders can posiable be a major distraction in the classroom impeding their education and their classmates’ education. In fact, Research has found the number one concern of many teachers and administrators is aggressive behavior by students in the classroom (Lynnette, Young, & Marchant, 2004). These behaviors have made it difficult
As teachers, we are often expending more of our energy than is necessary by not taking time to implement a more comprehensive approach toward behavior management. In many cases one will need only a few of these strategies in place to create a positive behavioral support plan.
There are different ways that a teacher can deal with a student’s undesirable behavior. Some of these strategies are: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment or extinction. The type of r...

Throughout the course of history there has been a vast amount of work on different aspects of helping behavior. Helping behavior can be defined as assisting an individual when they are in need of aid. A social psychologist may define helping as a function of the particular, momentary situation the bystander may find themselves in (Amoto, 1990). Helping behavior is considered a key aspect in social behavior. When considering helping behavior, gender is also an important variable that may have an influence on helping. In American society there is a well-known difference in the distinction in gender roles. Women are expected to care for the personal and emotional needs of others, and to deliver routine forms of personal service (Eagly & Crowley, 1986). Men can be expected to be more aggressive and show less emotion than women, but also expected to preform courteous duties. Society has a great impact on male and female gender differences, and could impact the response in helping behavior. According to a previous study done by Latene and Dabbs (1975), the results stated that men were more likely to give help, and women were more likely to receive help. The results from the study indicated that there is in fact a relationship between sex and helping behavior. The social customary of helping behavior may determine the response in helping behavior. Also, when considering gender as a primary effect on helping behavior, cell phone use has also been correlated with this relationship.
In the 21st century, teachers experience many behavioral issues with students in the classroom and face challenges that are very difficult to resolve. School districts have different expectations about how students must behave during school and teachers have their own expectations about how students must behave in their classroom. Every educator has different classroom expectations and students must follow specific standards; therefore, the responsibility of the teacher is to discuss the standards with all students and make sure those expectations are clear. According to Jones and Jones (2016), teachers whose students made greater achievement gains were observed establishing rules and procedures, and carefully monitoring student’s work. In
Noncompliance has several negative impacts on an individual. Firstly, noncompliance to requests or instructions can hinder a child from learning. This is especially so for children who engages in noncompliance behaviours maintained by escape. A child’s learning will be affected if he is often out of the class, taking away opportunities for him to learn new skills. Thus, compliance with teacher instructions in classroom settings is critical for effective learning (Martens & Kelly, 1993). In addition, noncompliance affects social skills development as the child may learn to engage in inappropriate behaviours to gain attention or escape from demand. These inappropriate behaviours may in turn affect positive social interactions with his peers and teachers. Secondly, noncompliance also limits access to potential job opportunities, especially for growing individuals with learning and developmental disabilities. Ability to comply to instructions and requests from supervisor is a necessary skill required of an employee. In addition, noncompliance are often made worse when individuals engage in aggression or self-injurious behaviours to escape from demands. Noncompliance, coupled with inappropriate behaviours, ...
Classroom management, involving all the strategies used by teachers in order to provide order in the classroom, can be regarded as an essential for effective teaching and learning. According to Davis (1981), “basic classroom management is just plain good sense. Yet, it can be as personal as your private lifestyle” (p.79). One of the biggest challenge teachers face day in and day out is dealing with behavior of children and young pupils in classroom. Therefore, the classroom practice of individual teachers would be the key aspect of improving the behavior of pupils in schools (Hart, 2010). One of the significant attribute of promise to teaching, especially in classroom behavior management, is teacher’s sense of efficacy. According to Woolfolk-Hoy (2000), development of self-efficacy is essential for producing effective, committed and ardent teachers, Moreover, teachers who are trained to be more effective in meeting both academic and non-academic student needs create a positive and successful classroom environment for all students (Alvares, 2007). The importance of self-efficacy in behavior management has been highlighted by Martin, linfoot, and stephenson (1999) who proposed that teacher’ responses to misbehavior may be mediated by their beliefs about their ability to deal with behavior, as well as their beliefs about the causes of student misbehavior.
As a teacher managing problem behavior in your classroom can be one of the most challenging tasks. Behavior problems can range from disruption of lessons to acts of violence against fellow students and teachers. Children’s emotional setbacks and life challenges can also contribute to behavior issues at school. A study done by the Justice Center and the Public Policy Research Institute found that six out of ten students suffered from an “emotional disturbance” and were expelled or suspended between seventh and twelfth grade (Firke, 2011). This same study showed that discipline varied greatly between schools. This report also revealed the urgent need for a more thoughtful technique in school discipline policies. In many cases teachers have exhausted their classroom management strategies without success. Behavior Modification is aimed at improving school and classroom behavior, and can give teachers additional tools to help them to deal proactively and effectively with behaviors that are disruptive to students and teachers in the classroom. When children are disruptive in the classroom it can cause a lot of problems for their classmates and their teacher. Yet, in the long run, it's the disruptive child themselves who is most impacted, on both a social and educational level (Epstein, Atkins, Cullinan, Kutash, & Weaver, 2008). Behavior modification techniques should be used in school, to change the negative behaviors, and increase the positive behaviors seen in these children.
Classroom management has the largest effect on student achievement, so students cannot learn in poorly managed classroom. Additionally, research has pointed out that the quality of teacher-student relationships is the main aspect of classroom management.(…2). Furthermore, when teachers set classroom management plan, the plan will give structure to everything from seating to lessons to grading to the relationship between students. Teachers should incorporate strategies for addressing student behavior into classroom
Discipline, management frequently interchanged in the education field, although they are distinctly different, and need treated as separate entities. Classroom management is the teacher’s responsibility and discipline is the student’s responsibility. Behavior and misbehavior are also terms that get confused. Classroom management, discipline, behavior and misbehavior are important aspect of every classroom. In order to have a well-organized classroom, the need to define and understand these terminologies becomes imperative.
As stated earlier, I believe Classroom Management is the key to how learning can take place and students can feel safe participating. I hope to create an environment that is conducive to learning and involves all my students. I believe the most important part of classroom management is not the behavior problems but creating a good rapport with the students, encouraging them to succeed and setting high expectations for them. As well as using an engaging a curriculum, I believe you can create this environment and it will limit the behavior problems in your classroom from the
