Recommended: Important of film editing

The Hurt Locker is a film about three soldiers who are a part of a bomb squad in Iran during a harsh war. The film is centers on Sergeant First Class William James, played by Jeremy Renner, who is seen throughout the film taking high risks with bombs. The film was filled with action and had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next. My feelings towards the film were mainly given to me by the way the film was edited. Editing in The Hurt Locker, allows for a viewer to feel the thrill and excitement in the world of the film by using the elements of editing, shot relationship, and continuity editing. The elements of editing such as shots, takes, scenes, and sequences are important factors to each film. In the film, the During the scene with the civilian who had a bomb attached to his body, after the bomb goes off there is a shot of James running as he looks back at the bombing. Then there is a cut to the shot of the debris of the bomb, a cut to the shot of soldiers falling down as the bomb goes off, and then there is a cut to the shot of James falling. This shot relationship is an example of movement editing. The relationship between these shots assist in making that particular scene more thrilling and exciting, viewers are able to understand the danger that James just put himself into in order to save the civilian man, making this moment sympathetic. Rhythmic editing refers to the relationship of shots and how that relationship controls the films pace. Before the bomb explosion, the rhythmic editing takes place at a fast pace, this happens so that the viewer can understand the time constraint that James was under to stop the bomb and adds adrenaline to the viewer. Once James is on the ground, there is a cut to a shot of him looking up in the sky at a kite, a cut to a shot of him looking over, then there is a cut from the kite to a harmless boy. The relationship between those shots insinuates how much James love the adrenaline and rush from his job. Editing does this by cutting to a one shot of James reaction as he looks up, cutting to a shot of a kite in the sky, and somehow everything seems a little bit more peaceful in this
