In order to survive, people will do almost anything. It’s hardwired in our minds, even after years of evolution.
To start with, we can see a multitude of real life examples of survival just through our television. Reality TV shows like Naked and Afraid and Man vs. Wild focus on people being pushed into survival situations. These shows help to demonstrate just how far humans will go to survive; participants eat bugs, create tools, and brave diseases. That’s not to mention all of the other real cases in which people have had to go out of their way to live. It happens every day, enough that we consider them commonplace. From events as big as the influx of Syrian refugees making dangerous journeys to Europe, trying to escape danger, to normal people having to take care of themselves after being caught in deadly situations such as house fires or car crashes.

The “survival of the fittest” trope is not uncommon in our media as well, where we go as far as to romanticize it.
The idea of an apocalypse can’t help but seem enticing to us. In fact, we seem to like dystopian stories in general, and admire the characters fighting to survive. You don’t have to look any further than the book The Hunger Games, where the protagonist Katniss lives in poverty and has to hunt her own food, later being forced to kill others to stay alive in a battle to the death. Likewise, the TV show The Walking Dead showcases how far its characters will go to survive in a zombie apocalypse, where the characters are constantly put into “them or us” type situations with other survivors, throwing morals to the wind in order to
live. Furthermore, our willingness to adapt for survival doesn’t stop at life and death situations. The use of the word “survival” can take a less literal meaning. It’s obvious how far people will go to achieve commodities we consider essential in our society. You won’t necessarily die if you don’t have a job or a college degree, but we consider these to be important enough to strive for against all odds. Obtaining milestones like this, for us, is surviving. It can be stretched for less serious things as well, like how a soccer team might try to win a game, or how politicians aim for public approval. It’s said that when you try to drown yourself, you instinctively inhale, and when you take too many pills, your body throws them up in defense. Time after time, our bodies have proven that they will always do what it takes to endure and regenerate, whether we offer our approval or not. This inborn ability to adapt is what has gotten us this far, and will undoubtedly be what drives us to fight for life even millions of years from now.
In both books they share some traits, even though they may not look anything alike they are. both of these novels are dystopian novels and many characters share similarity’s.

The basic core of the show is that the apocalypse is not entirely different than normal life. When people are put into situations that are new, there are various reactions. Some will bring their old values and beliefs, others will evolve into something they did not even know they were capable of. A few will find out they are more capable and valuable in a civilization such as this than they were before. When it comes down to it, authority figures can come from anywhere, people of power will fight to provide for themselves, and no one is safe from anything in a zombie apocalypse.
Do you enjoy reading about how to survive? Do you like to see children kill each other? The book, called “Hunger Games” has all the elements of survival. It is the perfect amount of survival and murder. Survival is key in the Hunger Games. You mainly need water, food, and shelter.
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
Love and loyalty are commonly associated with humanity and freedom, which is why they are often featured within the Dystopian genre in which dictatorships try to change what it means to be human. Love and loyalty are common themes running throughout George Orwell’s 1984, written in 1949 and Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, written in 2008.
Money is power in the U.S. and as such society is controlled by the powerful. Shall a film maker (writer, director, or producer) want their film to be a box office success the film must be created by the normative standards that have been set by those controlling the industry. Typically those regulating the media are the banks and a number of media companies (Horne, 2001; Mantsios, 2013). The Hunger Games (2012), directed by Gary Ross, is no different in the way that it lures the audience to anticipate and praise the film but lacks to extrapolate the subtle message of class inequality to its audience. Additionally the film fails at thoroughly considering class division and challenging race relations and hints subtly, but significantly, at racial inequality.
The story of The Hunger Games is an intense depiction of a totalitarianism society that is reigned by the Capitol, whom of which has complete political control over the twelve districts that are all located in Panem. Those who live in the twelve districts must undergo the possibility of entering into the infamous Hunger Games that are intended to remind and represent the Capitol’s authority over the powerless districts. Suzanne Collin’s novel and Gary Ross’s film of The Hunger Games have several things in common but also a few differences as well.
In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games; these children are referred to as tributes (Collins, 2008). The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. The televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eradicate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. The main character throughout the series is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen.
With a massive marketing campaign, it’s no wonder The Hunger Games quickly became a world-wide sensation. But, I believe its popularity isn’t due to marketing alone. In The Hunger Games we find important, if overly-dramatic, depictions of social conditions that weigh on the minds of young people today: an uneven distribution of wealth leading to massive and ever-growing class stratification; power in the hands of a few elite members; social control through widespread propaganda; and fierce competition among social classes for resources. Films like The Hunger Games are helpful for young people by teaching them a new way to see the world, through the lens of social theories such as Karl Marx’s Conflict Theory.
The Hunger Games is set in world called Panem that was once America, before the Capitol was overcome in some unexplained, apocalyptic war. As punishment for that aggression, the remains were divided into 12 districts. Every year each district has to send one boy and one girl between 12 and 18 years old, chosen by lottery, to compete in a nationally televised event called “the Hunger Games.” The purpose of this is to create a mass killing spree with only one survivor. What really twists this storyline is when two tributes from the same district fall in love and fight to protect each other until they are the last ones left in the games. The two go to extreme measures to keep one another out of danger. “You're still trying to protect me. Real or not real," he whispers. "Real," I answer. "Because that's what you and I do, protect each other” (Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games). Because the hunger games is such a gruesome event, the things Katniss and Peeta did for each other aren't typical things couples would give up for eachother. These two would share supplies and weapons along with going as far as killing off an attacking enemy. Seeing how far Katniss and Peeta were willing to go to be with each other gave me a better understanding of why Romeo and Juliet fought to never let anything get in between them. The film The Hunger Games, released in 2012 and based off the first book of a literary trilogy, has become a source of entertainment and intrigue among many Americans. Featuring a futuristic and dystopian United States, it has captured the imagination for some and kindled a intense obsession for others. While on the surface this movie might seem to simply be a story with a riveting plot line about young love, vicious combat, and survival, it is much more than that. As most films do, if one takes a closer look, The Hunger Games gives rise to multiple sociological patterns and themes. If one observes with an informed and critical eye, sociological issues that are embedded in the film are revealed. From this, one can draw cultural and sociological conclusions based on the way in which characters are portrayed, the setting is presented, and events unfold as the plot thickens. As I watched this film, I took note of four particular sociological themes that consistently presented themselves throughout the course of events: gender roles, race, class inequality, and class structure.
The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand and the movie The Hunger Games directed by Francis Lawrence and Gary Ross are popular among teens because they can relate to them by the high expectations put upon them. In a dystopian novel or movie, there is a dystopian protagonist. A dystopian protagonist is someone who often feels trapped, struggles to escape, questions existing systems, believes or feels as if something is wrong in the place they live in, and then helps the audience realize the effects of dystopian worlds. These are both good examples because it takes us on a walk through the protagonist's life and only then do we see what dystopian really is.
Dystopia is a term that defines a corrupt government that projects a false image. Thus, in a dystopian society, making belief and comfort that the society is proper to its followers. One good example of dystopian society is the Hunger Games. The terms that describe that dystopia towards the Hunger games are a “hierarchical society, fear of the outside world, penal system and a back story” (“Dystopia”).
Love reminds you that nothing else matters, all you need is love, and love is what makes the world go round. I never really knew that such short, common phrases could be so harmful. Because it seems like today everyone’s just throwing around the idea that love is a Band Aid and will heal all your wounds, or that love is the one thing in life that really truly matters. Due to this, certain people can feel incomplete, and in some cases, depressed.
