12 - Mood of Vignette 1 Esperanza’s mood in this first vignette of the novella “The House on Mango Street” is hopeful. Esperanza comes from a very large family consisting of her, her parents, her two brothers, and her younger sister. They move all of the time and recently moved to a house on Mango Street. Her family dreamed of a house with lots of space, but this house has one room and one bathroom. This would probably be crowded for all six members of Esperanza’s family. Esperanza is hopeful that one day she will have a beautiful house of her own. She lives in a poor neighborhood where everyone is hoping for better things. She doesn’t not like her house on Mango Street, it is not the house her parents were telling her they were going to have. In vignette 12 the tone was fearful but confident. She is afraid of others neighborhoods but confident that hers is safe. Esperanza says there are people that think her neighborhood is dangerous. She disagrees, the people others fear Esperanza does not because she knows them. When Esperanza enters other neighborhoods she herself gets scared. This shows she also has a lack of knowledge, like the people who are scared of Esperanza’s neighborhood. In Esperanza’s opinion, these people just don’t know any better. In vignette 16 the tone is confident, yet fearful. She is confident in her knowledge, but also fearful of what others may think about her. Esperanza thinks that the clouds actual names are more important than the everyday names Nenny is listing. One of the girls insults Esperanza and they begin to argue and call each other names. Both of these vignettes tones display fear and confidence. Esperanza is confident in her neighborhood but fearful in others. She is confident in her knowledge, yet fearful of the people insulting
