The environment that we are exposed to has a bigger impact on our behavior than our DNA. People aren't just born evil or automatically born good, a person's personality is molded by what they are taught and exposed to while growing up. A person's way of being is based on the way they are raised and who they are surrounded by during the process. For example, I grew up in what many people call the “hood”, where I saw kids get beat up, bullied, robbery, people get killed, heard gunshots, seen people sell drugs, and all types of things a child shouldn't be exposed to at such a young age. My aunts that lived in the hood and that tried their best to discipline my cousins always felt like they were doing something wrong because my cousins would always end up in the wrong places. But I believe it wasn't what my aunts were doing, it where they lived that influenced my cousins to become bad kids and to think what they were doing was right. My cousins would interact with all these different types of “criminals” and they'd participate in all different types of crimes and they would be rewarded for it. The hood makes you believe that being “bad” or “evil” is the only way of surviving but it's not. For my family members that were able to graduate and find better homes, their children turned out good people. I believe this is because they live in good neighborhoods where they aren't exposed to all these different types of violence and where people are actually rewarded for doing good. Being exposed to good people and living in good a neighborhood dramatically impacts our behavior because who we are surrounded with and what we see growing up is most of the times who we grow up to be.
