Here lies the home of an evil dragon in which a developing hero enters and battles with conflicts in every corner. Within the novel, The Hobbit, by the author, J. R. R. Tolkien with a side by side movie, directed by Peter Jackson, one can evaluate that there is countless differences between the two. It illustrates the heroic story of a hobbit with the name of Bilbo Baggins whose simple, ordinary life changes after a long, treacherous escapade. For instance, from the novel, Smaug stated, “I don’t know your smell, but if you are not one of those men of the Lake, you had their help. They shall see me and who is the real king under the Mountain!” (Tolkien 223). Smaug’s rage mixes up the storyline because the dwarves do not know what his anger is going to cause later on. This leads to the dwarves being puzzled with a bewilderment facial expression and allows us to foreshadow that the dwarves are depending on Bilbo. In contrast, within the movie, Smaug attacks the dwarves and Bilbo directly without any speech. During this attack, the dwarves find ancient treasures within the treasures which reflect on their past(Jackson).The certain clip is effective because the dark lighting and the hidden dragon brings tension towards the audience with the stirring music. Again, the director uses movie techniques as a way to demonstrate the background leaving mixed emotions. This leads into an impact because there is a whole new scene shown from Smaug’s short speech and little actions into a new dramatic issue.
