The Hobbit was a very popular book in the twentieth century it would make sense it would have an movie, but the movie was not exactly like the novel in fact it had big changes in the scene of the trolls, but why would Peter Jackson the director do this. Why would he change Tolkien the author book and his events. It was to make the movie more believable and it was very effective. Tolkien novel The Hobbit main story plots was about a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins goes on an adventure with an wizard and dwarfs to reclaim their lost gold from Smaug a dragon that took their precious gold. Two changes Peter Jackson made to the film compare to the film was how Bilbo Baggins was captured by the trolls and how they escaped by the help by Gandalf the great …show more content…
wizard. This was a very effective because it made the movie more believable and not making the viewers asking question about the film The Hobbit an unexpected journey. Firstly, one difference of the movie with the trolls scene was very different from the movie. The character were not different just the event with the trolls because for the viewers so they don’t ask question and wonder. One difference from the novel from the movie was the way Bilbo was capture in the movie as he was in the novel. In Tolkien version he was caught by one of the trolls talking wallet. For example in the novel of The Hobbit talking wallet from one of the trolls. " It was! Trolls purses are the mischief, and this was no exception. “ Ere, who are you?” it squeaked, as if left left the pocket” (Tolkien 36). In Tolkien version the talking wallet finds poor Bilbo and the taking wallet warns the trolls so the trolls can captured him. Tolkien intent was to add to an unusual character to the story. This is why The Hobbit is such a popular book because it has so much creative and thought put into it and it attract more viewers to see how this book is different from other books. This was the reason Tolkien the amazing writer add the talking wallet. This is very different from the movie. In Jackson version he was captured by one of the trolls because he need to sneeze and when he try to get his tisse he got Bilbo instead. (Jackson) They did this because in the movie the talking wallet only had one purpose and that was to get Bilbo captured. In the movie he never was there. They did this so viewers don't wonder what happen to the talking wallet. It was very starnge to have a character just dispear and don´t say anything or put the talking wallet in the movie and leave him unknow after the trolls were deafeated. This is why they did this. This was very effective and just fix the wonder about the novel. Also, campare from the novel you can really know how the character feel in moment beside from the novel. In the novel reader must pay attention the words the character state but the movie you always know. For example, in the movie when the Bilbo is caught he try to run and it looking down on him with an high angle to make him seem weak and less powerful than the trolls. (Jackson) Also when Bilbo get caught while the trolls are battling the dwarfs the viewers see an close up shot of Bilbo Baggins very scared. (Jackson) This was very effective because it made the movie more smooth and more belive so the wallet doesn’t have only one purpose so they decide to take him out of the movie. It also made the character see more emotion in the character by the framing and visual. Next there was another difference in the movie compared with the novel.
In the novel how Gandalf save Bilbo and the dwarfs were very different from the movie. In the novel of The Hobbit Gandalf saves them by mocking the trolls so Bilbo and the dwarfs can escape and the trolls turn into stone by the sunlight. “No good boiling em! We ain’t got no water, and it’s a long way to the well and all.” said a voice” (Tolkien 40). In the novel it was Gandalf who mock the trolls so they would fight so Bilbo and the trolls can escape. Tolkien intent was to make Gandalf very wise and let the reader see that trolls are that dumb. In the movie it was very different. In fact Gandalf didn't mock the trolls at all. In the movie the trolls were hit by the sunlight by Gandalf crack a rock in half with his magic. (Jackson) Peter Jackson did this because they want the viewers to see Gandalf more of an wizard than an wise old man. In the novel he act more of an wise old man than an wizard. Jackson taught that Gandalf act too much as a old man than a wizard. That why Jackson change it to make Gandalf to look and act more like a wizard. This made Gandalf look more like a wizard and made the character more believable. This was very effective because in the novel he didn't act like an wizard. Gandalf seem more like a wise man and the book. Peter Jackson didn't want the viewers to think of him as a wise man and think of him more of an wizard. This also made Gandalf look powerful before defeating the …show more content…
trolls. The movie does have very effective changes but not all.
They did make Gandalf more of an wizard than a wise man but maybe Tolkien trying to teach us a lesson. You don't have to be a warrior to do good. Look at the Gandalf and Bilbo. There not much in the beginning but as the story progressed they became an hero and maybe that what Tolkien trying to teach us. It okay to not be a wizard or a warrior but if you do well and good in the world that all that matters. This was uneffective as well because the trolls were nothing but an obstacle that they defeated. Nothing big really happen with the
trolls. In conclusion, the novel and the movie are very different because it changes by Peter Jackson and it made the story of The Hobbit more effective. The Hobbit movie was more effective because of taking out the talking wallet and making Gandalf look more like a wizard than a old wise man. The shot and framing made an difference as well to show how character felt. In result the movie was very effective and an enjoyable book to read.
Throughout, J.J.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, many themes come into place to give a better understanding of the novel. The underlying theme of the struggle between good vs. evil while Gandalf and the dwarves fight the evils during their journey through middle earth. The battle is manifested in the goblins, Trolls, and spiders where good always triumphs evil. Even though the journey is about stealing the gold back from the dragon there is still some moral clarity to this, the dragon stole the gold and torched the city. The dwarves want to make this right and get back what was rightfully theirs.
Just like any other book that had a movie made after it, there are always differences between the two, and The Wizard of Oz isn't any different. In the film and the story, the differences between the two are important on how they shape the story. The book and the movie have some pretty huge differences from each other including: the silver shoes, the wicked witch of the west, and how Dorothy actually went home from the land of Oz. Throughout the book the slippers are silver, the wicked witch shows up in the book one time and has one eye, and Dorothy really goes to the land of Oz. In the film the shoes are ruby, the wicked witch has both eyes and appears three, and Dorothy doesn't go to the land of oz, it was all just a dream. These are the differences that can change, and affect the story.
Babbitt vs. The Hobbit Sinclair Lewis’ character of George Babbitt is similar to J.R.R Tolkien’s character of Bilbo Baggins, but they are also very different. These two characters are alike in two different ways: in personality and the heroic journey. However, on every other subject these two characters are extraordinarily different. The most basic of these differences being that George Babbitt is an anti-hero and Bilbo Baggins is a hero. In the beginning both characters seem very much alike in the way that they are portrayed.
Although centuries distance the creation of Beowulf from The Hobbit, J. R. R. Tolkien took inspiration of different essential morals and character traits from Beowulf. In Beowulf, an epic hero Beowulf experiences significant tribulations and an ultimate battle that leads to his demise. In The Hobbit, Bilbo experiences similar tribulations, however, he gains courage and reverence throughout his journey. The nature of each book, how Bilbo experiences maturation when Beowulf experiences death, does not discredit Tolkien’s inspiration from Beowulf, it instead promotes the idea that each book was written for a different audience.
The book The hobbit is a very interesting book that tell of a hobbit that gets sucked into going on an adventure. This book is told by the view of the main character, Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit. “He is living the life when the book first starts. There is no one bugging him, he has his cozy little hobbit-hole all to himself. (Tolkin 12)” Then one day this is all changed. During this book, the main character, Bilbo Baggins is very dynamic and changes a lot throughout the book.
All in all, Bilbo has changed a great deal in The Hobbit. He went from flat, static, main, and protagonist to round, dynamic, main, and protagonist. He changed all throughout the books, but the five biggest chapters were chapter two, five, eight, nine, and twelve. Bilbo once was a very peaceful Hobbit. Now he is a bold adventurous Hobbit who takes risks. Therefore, Bilbo Baggins is a changed Hobbit at the end of the story.
Finally, as the novel is coming to an end, it is apparent how much Bilbo Baggins has changed throughout The Hobbit. In the introduction of the book, Tolkien displays Bilbo as a fearful creature afraid to follow his Took roots. As the book continues, Bilbo sees things that change him and make him a stronger hobbit than the old Bilbo. By the end of the book, Mr. Baggins finally gained his well earned respect and found out that being an adventurer is not an awful thing to be. So, it seems as if the theme of change in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien was shown through Bilbo’s character.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He studied at Oxford pursuing a degree in English language and literature. This later gave him the thought of creating his own imagined world known as Middle-Earth. He then later married Edith Bratt, had four children, and became a professor at Oxford. The Hobbit, first published in 1937, had some of Tolkien’s invented language and mythology. The plot and character’s of The Hobbit combined the ancient heroic Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian epics, which he studied at Oxford. The Hobbit “is immersed in folk tradition” (Matthews). The character Bilbo Baggins was inspired by the rural Englishman of the 1930s. Tolkien was inspired by ancient European myths leading him to write Lord of the Rings, a prequel to The Hobbit. On September 2,1973, J.R.R. Tolkien died at the age of eighty-one.
A movie that came out in 2002 was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This movie was based off the best-selling novel, which was written in 1997 by J.K. Rowling, called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. If you were to read this book and watch the movie you would find many differences, but the main difference between the two is that the book gives more information to the reader than the movie gives to the viewer. If someone was to watch the movie instead of reading the book, that person would not be able to have an accurate perception of the book because so many things in the book are changed in the movie or parts are left out of the movie completely. This is mainly because the book has more characters and chapters, which are able to keep the reader informed and interested. Still, the movie is shorter so that people who want a quick summary of the storyline can get it,
The Hobbit, written by John R. R. Tolkien, is a fantasy novel published on September 21, 1937. It was written as a prelude to the famous series, The Lord of the Rings, written seventeen years later. The Hobbit introduces the reader to an incredibly immersive fantasy world, that enriches the reader into its epic storyline. The story takes place in a land called Middle-earth, a land filled with enchanting surprises and magical wonders. It was the perfect playground for Tolkien to develop his main character Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo Baggins was a small hobbit, who unaware in the beginning would become a large role in the plot. It is through this character that Tolkien implemented the theme of heroism into the story. Bilbo’s unexpected adventure with the dwarves and the wizard gave him the opportunity to develop into the ultimate hero of Tolkien’s tale. Bilbo’s epic journey to become the hero of the story begins when Gandalf, the wizard, tells Bilbo of an expedition that would soon change his life forever.
It is not uncommon for movies to take some creative license when adapting a novel for a cinematic film. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is a story about the antics of a hobbit and his dwarven companions. Peter Jackson, a famous director, took this book and turned it into a three-part movie series. As The Hobbit, is a relatively short book, it is not a stretch to assume Jackson made some changes to the films. After viewing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, it is clear to see the differences between the book and the movie.
It is likely for one to assume that a classic piece of literature set in a fantasy oriented stage will have no merits to the youths of today. The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, however, with its crafty of usage symbolism, displays its relevance to issues that often trouble teens. As the story progresses from a children’s tale to an epic, the main character Bilbo undergoes a series of development, his experiences often overlapping with ordinary people. Reading the Hobbit will provide teens with opportunities of exploring the importance of several common but serious topics. People may encounter many of the themes presented in the book elsewhere repeatedly, but it’s possible that they never appreciated the applications it might have on themselves. When teens read the Hobbit, they perceive it as a simple fiction of adventure. Under proper guiding, they will be able to recognize and utilize the lessons of the Hobbit, and improve their attitudes and ideas about life.
In Tolkien 's story, good will always win over evil. The first evil that Bilbo and the dwarves come across is the trolls. The dwarves and Bilbo are caught and put into sacks. Gandalf comes and starts a fight between the trolls about how to cook the dwarves and Bilbo. Gandalf keeps them fighting until daybreak and the sun turns the trolls into stone. The adventure from now on would get more dangerous by the minute. There “are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go.”(98). Another enemy of the dwarves is goblins. The fight with the goblins is the second adventure in the story. While traveling in the Misty Mountains, they are captured by the goblins. Everyone is captured and carried through the tunnels into the heart of the mountain. Gandalf like always manages to stay uncaptured. Gandalf again comes to the rescue by killing the Great Goblin. For a second time, the forces of evil are destroyed by the good doings of Gandalf and the dwarves. It is Bilbo 's third adventure, however, that proves that good will overcome evil. Smaug is where Bilbo 's full glory was revealed. He stands in front of the beast and talks with it. Anyone else wouldn 't hesitate to run for their lives. Smaug smells the dwarves and tries to kill all of the dwarves when he figures out what they are doing. The battle between good and evil
Gandalf fears that the ring that has been in Bilbo's possession for so long could be the “one ring,” The “one ring” is a ring of myth and has been lost to history. It was created by Sauron who was the most powerful being to ever exist and was pure evil. With the power of the “one ring” he almost brought Middle-Earth to destruction and complete tyranny. Sauron was defeated and the “one ring” was supposedly destroyed or at least believed to be. It happened to not be the case and during Bilbo's adventures when he was younger, he stumbled upon th...
