Jelly Beans
Around the world small, sweet, sugar filled candies bring enjoyment to those who consume them. What are these tiny, pleasure inducing sweets? The answer is jelly beans. Jelly beans are produced in numerous varieties and flavors; therefore, their story is just as diverse and colorful as they are.
The History of Jelly Beans
Initially, the first jelly bean was created in the early 1800s by an unknown American candy maker. However, one can trace back the beginnings of their production process to 17th century France. The French made Jordan Almonds, sugar glazed almonds, by a process called panning, which is now used to make the hard-sugar coating on jelly beans. Panning is the rocking of a desired item in a container filled with syrup and sugar until it forms a hard candy shell. By the mid-1800s jelly beans had become very popular in the United States. An 1861 advertisement, even recommended sending jelly beans to soldiers fighting in the Civil War. The most popular jelly bean distributer soon became The Herman Goelitz Candy Company (established in 1869), today known as The Jelly Belly Candy Company. Originally, jelly beans were sold by weight and flavor then taken home in paper bags; but beginning in 1976, the Jelly Belly Company created pre-mixed and assorted flavored bags. The eight original mixed flavors were: Root Beer, Very Cherry, Cream Soda, Green Apple, Grape, Lemon, Licorice, and Tangerine. Today, The Jelly Belly Company has one hundred and thirty-three flavors and is constantly adding to their wide assortment.

n the college essay, “ Chunky Peanut Butter” Jam Gregory describes himself as “ the chunky peanut butter”. Meaning that he feels that he is like the heart of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. His article was certainly the most compelling out of the other two. A few reasons are, he uses good word choices and figurative language, shows he does different activities, and how he likes to help people.
Nutri-Grain cereal bars were created by the Kellogg Company and first introduced in the 1970’s Australia. They were later introduced to the United States and other countries. As more women began to work outside the home, the ritual of a family breakfast became obsolete as many individuals turned to quicker solutions for breakfast. The Nutri-Grain bar soon became popular as the on-the-go snack during the 1990’s. The cereal bar also comes in a variety of flavors that kids love, from blueberry to strawberry yogurt and has the texture a soft, homemade cookie. This television commercial centers on the theme of fostering a relationship between today’s kids and nature (see Appendix A). As the youth of today spends more time in the electronic world,
Before Milton Hershey had a world wide known chocolate business, he had a small, not so well known caramel business. Milton Hershey began his chocolate making business in 1893, when his father and him traveled to Chicago to attend a big job fair (Tarshis 14), but it wasn’t until 1900 when Hershey succeed in making the first milk chocolate candy bar (The Hershey Company). Hershey attended an exhibit hall of new and amazing inventions around the world at the fair in Chicago. As Hershey walked into the exhibit hall, he was struck by a delectable smell (Tarshis 14). “Hershey was already a leading candy maker. He had created the largest caramel factory in the country, but he became convinced that the future of his business would be chocolate. At the fair in Chicago, Hershey Bought chocolate-making equipment. He had it shipped back to his caramel factory in Pennsylvania. Then he hired two chocolate makers. Soon the company was churning out chocolate candies in more than 100 shapes” (Tarshis 15).
Madelyn McQueen - Twin Falls Idaho Have you ever wondered how the delicious, classic treat came to be? Well, any event you can think of after the date of 1938, the cookie was bound to be there. Several stories about how the country’s favorite baked good came to be, have been spread and believed by thousands. For example, Ruth Wakefield unexpectedly ran out of nuts for a regular ice-cream cookie recipe and, in desperation, replaced them with chunks chopped out of a bar of Nestle bittersweet chocolate. Another story is said that the vibrations from an industrial mixer caused chocolate stored on a shelf in the Toll House kitchen to fall into a bowl of cookie dough as it was being mixed. Sadly, all of these stories are false, says Carolyn Wyman in her recently published “Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Book.” In her book, Wyman offers a more believable version of how the cookie came to be. Wyman argues, that Ruth Wakefield, who had a degree in household arts and a reputation for perfectionism, would not have allowed her restaurant, which was famed for its desserts, to run out of such

The painting “Sugar Shack” depicts how African Americans relieve physical tension through dance and movement. This painting suggests that Ernie Barnes shows how his culture expresses themselves through dance. In fact, one of the reasons Sugar Shack is popular is because of the way Barnes captured physical strain and dynamic movement through the extension of arms and legs and the swaying of hips. We see the figures as men and women who are dancing in pairs, physically relating to one another and to other couples. This creates a sense of unity among all the figures in the piece, including the band. Barnes said, “Sugar Shack is a recall of a childhood experience. It was the first time my innocence met with the sins of dance.” The painting is supposed to make a person feel the rhythm while viewing it to show that African Americans use rhythm as
What is the greatest invention? Many think of the printing press, the wheel, or the telegraph, but most do not immediately consider sliced bread; yet, it is the invention to which all others are compared. Without it, the phrase “the best thing since sliced bread” would not exist. Sliced bread had a greater effect on the world than most realize. For example, the toaster was invented two years before sliced bread, but after the invention, the sales of the toaster soared (“Fascinating Facts”). Sliced bread shaped our perspective of food and convenience in America. Additionally, the way in which bread was sliced differentiated individuals: thinner for women and children and thicker for workers and men. The bread slicer contributed to the American desire for accessible food that continues to this day. Sliced bread was more than simply an invention to relieve housewives; it revolutionized the American way.
That same year, at the suggestion of two “DeadHeads’ from Portland Maine, Ben and Jerry introduced the first ice cream named for a rock legend, Cherry Garcia. In 1988 they introduced Chunky Monkey at the request of a college student in New Hampshire.
In 1928, an accountant, Walter Diemer, invented an improved version of bubble gum. The only food coloring he had on hand was pink, so for many years, pink was the common color of bubble gums. Diemer arranged to market the bubble gum in Philadelphia candy stores and the product became wildly popular with children. Fleer Company purchased the recipe, and named the product Dubble Bubble.
On any given day, nearly 14% of the U.S. population eats beans, according to government statistics. Many West Virginians, particularly those from the southern coalfields, are probably already starting to chuckle at the percentage. Multiple that maybe by seven (98%) if counting supper plates in the mountain state and while you’re at it, change that “given day” to every day.
Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc., the Vermont-based manufacturer of ice cream, frozen yoghurt and sorbet, was founded in 1978, with a $12,000 investment ($4,000 of which was borrowed).
