The Hunger Games is a film based on a novel by Suzanne Collins about a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world set in Panem. Every year, the Capitol of Panem maintains its control over the districts by forcing each to select one teenage boy or girl, known as tributes, to play The Hunger Games, which is a deadly fight between each district. Only one player has to make it out alive. Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games follows the hero’s journey, a layout that is commonly used in stories. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, begins in her ordinary world, where she lives with her family in District 12, the poorest, least populated, and smallest district ruled by the wealthy, autocratic capital. Katniss's sister, Prim, was randomly chosen from the lottery. Rather than seeing her innocent sister die, Katniss volunteered to play for her. This shows that Katniss Everdeen's journey fits into the hero's journey as she transitions from her ordinary life in District 12 to another world after volunteering to play for her little sister. …show more content…

During the first game, Katniss impressed the judges by demonstrating her archery skills. She shows off her skills by aiming her arrow at the apple that is inside the pig's mouth. After impressing the judges, she starts to believe that the judges view her as a threat but ends up scoring the highest. Katniss is being challenged by other contestants who team up on her to kill her as she is surrounded by them on top of a tree while trying to figure out an escape. During Katniss’s journey in the arena, she meets her ally, Rue, who insists Katniss cut the branch in half so that they are killed by tracker jackers, an engineered wasp mutation created by the Capitol.
