The theme of the dystopian novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is survival. Katniss displays this theme because she has perseverance, has integrity, and is resourceful.
One trait of Katniss's that helps project the story's theme of survival is her resourcefulness. Chapter eleven, page one hundred and fifty-five states that Katniss is resourceful with this quote, "Before settling down, I take my wire and set two twitch-up snares in the brush." This quote expresses Katniss's resourcefulness and helps reinforce the theme because resourcefulness is an attribute that is needed in order to survive. Without resourcefulness, Katniss would not have the shrewdness to survive in the Games. Katniss setting snares before she respites

is an example of resourcefulness because during the night, while she is asleep, the traps have the power to catch game, which she can eat. She is using her resourcefulness to multitask; she is basically sleeping and hunting simoultansley. Now that Katniss has set her traps, she is now looking for a place to spend the nighttime. She finds a tree, and because she is resourceful and clever, she decides to sleep in a willow tree that will not draw attention towards her.
In chapter eleven, pages one hundred and fifty-five through one hundred and fifty-six, the text states "I pick my tree carefully.

A willow, not terribly tall, but set in a clump of other willows, offering concealment in those long, flowing tresses. Another trait of Katniss's that helps convey the theme of survival is her integrity. Leaving their current reality Katniss and Peeta are on the train heading to an unknown world...the Capitol. Upon arrival, Peeta and Katniss are greeted with a lavish and astronomical amount of food.
In chapter three, on page forty-four, the text states, "Throughout the meal, Effie Trinket keeps reminding us to save space because there's more to come.

But I'm stuffing myself because I've never had food like this, so good and much..." This quote exemplifies how survival may be needed in a variety of instances and situations. Katniss is in an unprecedented place; she has never known food to be displayed and interspersed in the manner in which it was. Katniss has only known an arduous life of starvation. Although all of the food is in front of her, her moral principle keeps her grounded to not overindulge in this feast. Peeta and Katniss have now arrived in the Capitol. They are getting a small glimpse into the lives of the people that reside

In chapter four, on page fifty-nine, the text illustrates: "...the oddly dressed people with bizarre hair and painted faces who have never missed a meal." This quote illustrates how Katniss resents the Capitol. These flamboyant people have always had an abundance of food and have nothing to do but dye their skin and wait for a new group of tributes to participate in the Hunger Games. Although Katniss greatly despises these people, her integrity helps her survive and allows her to become likable to the Capitol people. It is important for Katniss to be amiable to the residents of the Capitol if she wants sponsors in the Games.
Ultimately, Katniss knows that in order to survive she must remain true to who she is, and where she came from; she would need to use her integrity as strength when forced to fraternize with the citizens of the Capitol.
