Injustice represents a lack of fairness or justice. The theme of injustice is established in the book “The Hate You Give”. There are numerous individual examples that can indicate injustice, such as when Khalil got killed because of the officer 115 assumption. Additionally, Starr’s childhood best friend got shot in a drive-by shooting for no reason. Furthermore, Starr’s dad (Maverick) was asked to face down on the ground for nothing. The theme of injustice appears throughout The Hate U Give when the officer shoots Khalil without a valid reason. For example, “And was it necessary for that cop to pull the trigger” (Thomas, Page 28). This shows that the cop killed Khalil for no reason, Khalil didn’t do any bad actions that the cop specified. The theme of injustice appears in the book “The Hate You Give” with Natasha getting killed in a drive-by shooting and the police not even investigating. For instance, “The shots, the look on Natasha’s face. They never caught the person who did it. I guess it didn’t matter enough. But it did matter. She mattered” (Thomas 98). This demonstrates injustice because the officers didn’t care enough to investigate the case of Natasha getting shot. It’s unfair since Natasha never did anything wrong, which makes no sense for her to get killed and not even get acknowledged for justice after death.
