The Renaissance era was a very grim time to live in, mostly for the children. Their well-being, education and future were something that was often jeopardized by everyday factors of life. Their parents were not really there for them, they were more focused on other more important matters. Many children today believe that they live harsh lives and that their parents do not care for them, but if they were to travel back decades ago and live the lives of The Renaissance children, their outlook might alter. The children of Renaissance had everyday lives of poverty amongst a society pyramid. There was no “moving up” or “upgrading”; whichever economic family you were born into, was the family you died in. Everything, which is a gift now, is a struggle to obtain during that era; such as schooling. Education was very limited for middle class and poor children (royal youth received a little more than their pupils beneath their standing). Since their earliest age (such as ten through twelve) adolescents were expected to be “young little adults”. There was not much of a childhood for them since adulthood was rushed so quickly into their young lives. The youth born into the Renaissance era lived the harshest of lives than any other generation; their childhood and schooling were the major contributors to it. They strived to meet the expectations of adults. While struggling to live in a day to day unfortunate life and attempt to enjoy the fun of being a kid when they had the chance.

Child- rearing practices in the 1500’s and 1600’s were very different from modern times. During the 1500’s and 1600’s, children were raised in various ways due to conditions such as mortality rates. There was a shorter life expectancy during these times, due to illnesses caused by rodents hygiene, and the disposal systems for waste products, which gave parents a precise reason to make their children grow up quicker than normal. The goal for most parents when raising their children during these times was to raise their young adolescents into mature adults with the help of harsh punishment and religion to get their children to decipher right from wrong.

In conclusion, the affect of the relationship largely depends on the quality of communication between parents and children. The parents’ may need to examine their children’s objection, and vice versa. This can be shown in “Romeo and Juliet”, “Her Father” and “My father thought it Bloody Queer”, where all parents have lack of communication with their children. They show their parental love by deciding what the best is for their children; they insist their children to do as they are told. As a result, children attitude begins to change as their parents have neglected their feeling. This causes suffering for parents and children which may end their relationship.
Aries argues Childhood is a relatively new concept that emerged around the seventeenth century, concomitant with such developments as a decrease in infant mortality, changes in the European educational system, increasing class stratification, and a gradual withdrawal of the family from a wider web of social relation. In a controversial claim, Aries argument regarding the “discovery” of childhood in seventeenth century in much debated point which is “in medieval society the idea of childhood did not exist”(Aries, 125). This claim has been both enthusiastically adopted and categorically dismissed by scholar from various disciplines. Hugh Cunningham points out that the English translation of Aries’s text uses the term “idea” where Aries himself uses the term “sentiment” which carries two meaning: “the sense of a feeling about childhood as well as a concept of it” (Cunningham 30).
We have movement in today’s society. With lateral movements we remain inactive and with upward movement we upgrade ourselves in getting education, practicing sports, etc. Both movements are caused by many factors in our daily life, yet they are the effects of what we experience in the past. Misguidance, love, affection, neglect and leadership come from our nearest cluster or family. When researching daily life in the Elizabethan Era, there were two prominent social classes throughout most of England. The upper or noble class families were akin to today’s upper class. However, the low-class families were much different from today’s low-class families. The gap between the two classes was so huge and a majority of England was impecunious. Most of the low class was orphans, abandoned wives, widows, the infirm, and the elderly. Each class, even the ones in the middle would despise anyone in a class lower than their own (Forgeng 21). Due to a lack of education, an overload of household responsibilities, and a lack of social acceptance, low-class Elizabethan English children were unable to flourish.
The early Renaissance, which had begun in Quattrocento Italy, was sparked by the beginnings of the Humanist movement. The Middle Ages was a time in history where everyone was faithful to religion as well as others. Also, in the Middle Ages, people were encouraged to always try their best; they were encouraged to strive for the highest achievement possible and to never give up. The Renaissance, however, was more focused on becoming matured and finding a way to be successful at everything one does. During this era, people strived to become all-sided men, also known as; renaissance men. This means they are not only successful in one type of art but in all types of art, as well as math, science, and literature. The Renaissance was a distinct period in time that was separated from the Middle Ages and began a new era.
Renaissance society was made up of 3 estates. The first estate is clergy, the second is nobility also called Renaissance men and the third is commoners. 85% of commoners were peasants and the other 15% were townspeople. It is inferred that the parents should take care of their children and have their best interest at heart. This however, is not the case in Greek and Roman mythology. The killing of ones own children, or filicide, was not viewed as negative upon in their era. The contemporary times contrast with the ancient Greek and Roman’s because it was justified to use any means necessary to obtain a higher status. The Greeks and Romans valued keeping a high social reputation and having respect for those of great power. The motherly union between their children conflict with the reality that the father strives to retain or gain control. These circumstances cause a tense bond between the members of the family. The strained parent to child relationship in Greco-Roman myths is prevalent in the fact that the parents are fearful of being overtaken by their children, and endeavor to limit their upbringing.
The importance of raising a child correctly is expressed from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. In document 11 it is says that parents will “rejoice and become parents of wise and worthy children.” This document was written in 1581 and shows that this was the goal of raising a child so that they may become wise and worthy. This time era was filled with many good things that allow modern life to exist. The Renaissance was a time of many new ideas and many new practices in medicine, entertainment, punishments and many other topics. Without the knowledge that was gained in this era many things that we take for granted now would never of existed. In this essay I will tell you about the many things that occurred during this time period and how people in this time would have lived their daily lives.
Therefore, this lead to a new life for the people’s marriage and family life, patronage of the arts, the society’s secular outlook on things, and even their individualism. It is believed that the development of the Renaissance was caused because of the women not being able to remarry after the passing of their first husband, but they receive all of their husband’s inheritance. Therefore, this caused a larger number of singles which is believed to be why the Renaissance reputation was sodomy, prostitution, and love triangles. However, women had the advantage because if they were married they had wealth and after their husband’s death they had their freedom. Art served as a political function because of its power that it served like that of civic pride for patriotism. Art became so important that it caused it to people to begin to buy it as an investment. Secularism and Individualism were outlooks on the Renaissance. Secularism grew because of the ability for people to fulfill their lives with anything that their money could buy which helped the art and literature during the Renaissance.

There are proponents of the debate that childhood is disappearing which will be discussed in this section which include Postman (1983), Elkind (1981) and Palmer (2006). In considering these points of view which are mostly American, one must firstly set in context what is meant by the disappearance or erosion of childhood. This key debate centres on Postman (1983) who wrote “The disappearance of childhood” which is a contentious book about how childhood as a social category which is separate from adulthood is eroding. He defines a point where childhood came into existence, which was treated as a special phase in the middle ages based on the work of Aries in his book “Centuries of childhood” (1962, cited in Postman 1983).
