America would not have been what it is today, if it wasn’t for what Tom Brokaw calls “The Greatest Generation”, the generation that enabled America and the people of America to become advance and made unthinkable strides that is quite prevalent in today’s society, but with our remarkable strides and prevalence’s today’s generation are losing a great deal of those core values that made “The Greatest Generation” worthy of greatness. “The Greatest Generation” did develop everlasting work ethics that helped in the way they earned their money, saved and spend it, that today’s generation did not quite pick up on or even held on too very strongly. America up, coming from the devastations of The World Wars, and The Great Depression. In addition to Brokaw’s claims of what he calls “The Greatest Generation”, Russert does also exemplify some of the best traits of that generation, through explaining life growing up with his family trying to work and survive the aftermath of The Great Depression. “The Greatest Generation” as Brokaw calls it, enabled America and the people of America to become advance and made unthinkable strides that is quite prevalent in today’s society, but with our remarkable strides and prevalence’s today’s generation are losing a great deal of those core values that made “The Greatest Generation” worthy of its greatness. Indeed, Americans became technologically advanced that reduced and take off the pressure of the work loads, which in the prior generation did not have, that generation didn’t have the technology or even the advancements to make building a plane less tricky, or building a car with just a push of a button, each item in most cases were made by hands in the prior generation which was much of a strain, but it did instill in them, good work ethics and core values, those values that help them through Americas Great Depression, and was even able to go on to fight World War II, that was Americas greatest generation, the generation that made America what it is today. Today’s generation has made remarkable strides regarding the great depression and world war II, but yet still this generation is losing the core values, that the prior generation had like personal responsibilities, and having a humbled nature. We live in the society where one would blame something, or someone else for what happened. If we can’t find anything or anyone at fault for our situations, or tribulations, we tend invent something that will take away the situation or temporary numb it. This is such an undeniable destructive pattern, for both personal improvement, for the health, and the progression of America. For someone to have or even given responsibilities was a great honor from the individuals that are a part of “The greatest Generation”. That generation thought and is still teaching lessons of leadership, and leadership can only start with an understanding of what personal responsibilities are. This generation doesn’t possess what the prior or elder generation possessed which was having humility and straight forward and modesty.
It is most definitely not a part of today’s society. The main ideals of today’s society seem to be the more attention you pull is better. This notion prevalent across various cultures, it is seen television, through individuals who has careers as entertainers, to the sports and athletes we love. The elder generation, they held the notions of having dignity, and being modesty. Their norm of living held higher standard and higher expectancies, and humbling yourself was a part of their core values. The Behavioral norms of today’s generation could definitely take a few lessons to learn from and in doing so, to benefit greatly by taking a few notes from elder generation so we could humble …show more content…
ourselves. “The Greatest Generation” did develop everlasting work ethics that helped in the way they earned their money, saved and spend it, that today’s generation did not quite pick up on or even held on too very strongly, because of the technological advances and ,any other advancements that currently helps this generation to work more quickly and more efficiently, as appose to the elder generation that had little technology which forced them to work hard, especially while in the in war, as stated in the novel Big Russ and Me by Tim Russert “it was a whole generation that embarked on a mission they had never even imagined much less prepared for. When duty called, they answered immediately. They performed bravely and well, and if they complained they did so with honor” (Russert,18). These brave soldiers had learned how to put their focus on the task at hand and learned not to give up and keep working until that task or the mission they had to complete was accomplished. Theses soldiers worked and labored hard to support their family and ensure that they were financially secured, that they didn’t have when they were growing up. In today’s generation a parent has many difficulties in trying to instill in their children, how to develop hard work ethics, and how it can help them to enjoy an honest pay. But back in that time deciding whether or not you wanted to work was not an option, in order to survive everyone had to work for personal situation and together as a country, they sometimes had to work two and three jobs in order to support the family, both parents had to support the family financially, and they took great pride in what ever job or work they were doing. Today’s generation has to be thankful that we are not facing the strain of world war II, as stated in the novel “it wasn’t easy to forget that Germany and Japan were mighty adversaries, and that when World War II began, America was almost totally unprepared for combat. Had the event occurred in a slightly different way we would be living today in a vastly differently world” (Russert,18). But we’ve became so technologically advanced since those days, that it lightened the heavy strain and work load on Americans so it could keep America safe and prosperous, but with all of this easy gains it made this generation as a whole view working as punishment. This is leading to slothfulness and almost taking what we have today for granted. In today’s generation we do live in a society where everything is disposable, nothing is permanent everything becomes temporary, that does include our money, as according to Charles O N Gorder Md “Everything comes too easy. Nowadays you just don't make the effort like you did in our day.” (Gorder Md, 44). The efforts to work hard and maintain a family is diminishing in today’s society, nothing is cherished or saved like the generation in the 30’s and 40’s did, they saved everything down to their very last penny, or piece of bean. The discipline of the day to them was to be frugal. Brokaw had his reasons for calling the prior generation “The Greatest Generation” that practically build America up, coming from the devastations of World War II, and The Great Depression.
In "The Greatest Generation," according to howstuffworks.com “Tom Brokaw argued that the World War II generation's perseverance through difficult times is a testament to their extraordinary character.” These characters which is hard to find in in today’s society, “Their remarkable actions, during times of war and peace, ultimately made the United States a better place in which to live. Born and raised in a tumultuous era marked by war and economic depression, Brokaw asserts, these men and women developed values of "personal responsibility, duty, honor and faith." These characteristics helped them to defeat Hitler, build the American
economy.” “The Greatest Generation” indeed went to through hardship and difficult times to build America and improved the lives of Americans, which this current generation do take for granted, and fail to realize the hard work and hardship that generation had faced in order to make it easy for us today. According to howstuffworks.com “they made advances in science and implement visionary programs like Medicare. According to Brokaw”, "[a]t every stage of their lives they were part of historic challenges and achievements of a magnitude the world had never before witnessed."
...tories dedicated to many more heroes of “the greatest generation.” He mentions a man by the name of Jack Hemingway, who parachuted into France behind enemy lines, where he was taken prisoner by the Germans, and a woman named Helen Strauss, who was nominated as New Jersey’s Psychologist of the Year in 1997 for her hard work and dedication to children and low-income families. She was also known as a great woman for her service in the Navy. Brokaw also mentions Bill Mauldin, a writer who “shared with those on the front lines as well as those at home the hard truths and dark humor of life at war.”(p381) With Brokaw’s use of “hard truths,” again, the image of savage fighting appears to the reader. Another picture comes forth in the reader’s mind from Brokaw’s use of “dark humor.” A picture of a bleak and cloudy memories that the soldier’s mask with a sense of humor.
World War II opened a new chapter in the lives of Depression-weary Americans. The United States of America had an unusual importance in the war, it had been spared the physical destruction that had taken place throughout the world. Americans on the home front did not see the fighting and brutality as other countries experienced it. However, the events and changes on the home front due to the World War transformed America. One of the greatest conversions was that of the American woman. Women around the country were transformed from the average house wife into a person with a voice and most importantly a purpose.

The people who fought in the World War II were not happy that they had to go to war. They were often heros, they suffered a lot. That does not mean they wanted to. They were drafted and could do nothing else but fight. The war took their lives, literally and figuratively. They lost part of their humanity in the war. They saw the horrors of the war and it became normal for them to talk about it in any situation. This scene highlights the contrast between normal life and war life. I think that this scene contradicts the notion of the “greatest generation”. The horrors of war change people, but not for
The Varied Impact of the Great Depression on American People The experiences of Americans during the Great Depression varied greatly. For most, the Great Depression was a time of hardships and trials. The way that people were tried were different though, some languished in a collapsed economy, while others had to struggle to make a living in the remote regions of the country. The years berween 1929 and 1933 were trying years for people throughout the world.
“The Roaring Twenties were the period of that Great American Prosperity which was built on shaky foundation”. This quote came from an anonymous person describing the great life in the 20’s. It’s very true because it was a great time of social and economic growth, but it was a very unstable and random way of living, which didn’t end up lasting as long as some had hoped. As time goes by in history, many things make America what it is today. The roaring twenties were the most important years contributing to the change in America. First off, the twenties made such an important impact because this was a time for the economy to boom and reform, also during this time women’s rights became more focused on, and lastly due to the many advancements in technology the twenties was a time of great prosperity and wealth. The twenties made life seem so easy, until reality sets in.
From the very beginning of his time in the presidential spotlight, Theodore Roosevelt signified the Progressive goal and ambition. Often times, Roosevelt’s presidency is labeled as accidental or ironic. This irony is present in the fact that he was given the role of vice president to William McKinley simply because Roosevelt’s rising popularity and progressive ideals were seen as a threat by McKinley. The McKinley administration figured that they could silence the growing progressive voice Roosevelt embodied by giving him the menial position of vice president. So, it was seen as a shock when McKinley was suddenly assassinated, six months into his second term, and Roosevelt rose to power bringing with him new excitement and power to the Presidency (Theodore Roosevelt ). It is exactly this surge of excitement and charisma which made Roosevelt one of America’s most unforgettable presidents. His presidential career and attitude can be described by the phrase “steward of the people” which he aimed to embody throughout his term, this meant that Roosevelt made his primary goal to maintain the public good to the fullest extent of his power (Theodore Roosevelt ). Roosevelt’s character and contributions to the Progressive campaign are both equally important parts of American history and will be explored throughout this paper.
To the nations rescue, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected and provided many alternative solutions for the repair of America. Roosevelt supplied hundreds of thousands with jobs. He also had acts passed that saved banks and found solutions to protect American jobs. The beginning of World War II marked the ultimate end of the depression.
Many adolescents, In the Great Depression, received the full affects and suffered. Some were left hungry, impoverished, and hopeless, how are adolescents today compared? The 30’s were a time of great distress for many Americans. Events such as the stock market crash, an economy suffering from being inflated, overuse of credit, a farming crisis, and other events led America to the economic downfall known as the Great Depression. During the great depression, the unemployment was high, the wages were low, lines stretched around the city for food, families that lost their house had to live in makeshift homes in communities called hoovervilles, and children had to stop school to work for money. Teens effected by the Great Depression worked hard for low wages to try to put food on their family’s table. Today, teens are gluttonous and live a very care free life style with financial stability of their families. As you can see adolescents in the Great Depression differ much from today.
The Great Depression occurred from 1929 and lasted to the early 1940’s. It was a deep and tragic period of time where everyone was affected in some capacity. This period marks the longest most widespread depression in American History. It has devastating effects to both the rich and poor. Cities all around the world were hit hard by this crisis.
Welfare programs are an important part of American society. Without any type of American welfare, people will starve, children will not receive the proper education, and people will not receive any medical help simply because they do not have the resources available to them. Each of the three aspects of the American welfare system are unique in their own ways because they are funded differently and the benefits are given to different people. While support for these welfare systems has declined in the more recent years, the support for it when it was created was strong.
For our fourth class we went to Generation Farms in Cedar, they run multiple programs, but the one we learned mostly about is their equine facilitated wellness for youth. Generation Farms employs two child and youth care workers on staff who continuously related the program to what we have been learning over the course of our degree.
The Great Depression was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downfall in the history of the United Sates. No event has yet to rival The Great Depression to the present day today although we have had recessions in the past, and some economic panics, fears. Thankfully the United States of America has had its shares of experiences from the foundation of this country and throughout its growth many economic crises have occurred. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors ("The Great Depression."). In turn from this single tragic event, numerous amounts of chain reactions occurred.
Generation Z is determined to change the future and is at an advantage over all previous generations to do so. This group is those born between the years 1995 and 2012, whom are currently ages 4 to 21. Statistics show Gen Z is extremely mature for their age with the lowest levels of drug use, alcohol consumption, smoking, and teenage pregnancy in decades, as stated by JWTIntelligence. This demonstrates that they are future orientated. Generation Z is unified, diverse, realistic, and technologically advanced, making them the generation with the power to impact the world.
The generation that I was born into can sometimes be easily misunderstood by those in earlier generations. The individuals in my generation get thrown many different labels such as those that Rosie Evans (n.d.) listed in her article, “Millennials, Generation Y, the Lost Generation, boomerang kids, the Peter Pan generation…” and more. This can impact us as a whole because some will begin to live by the labels, in some cases that can be negative but in others it may be beneficial. Many people in this generation believe that they can’t reach their full potential due to labels and prejudgment, while there are others believe nothing can hold them back. When we get labeled all together that is also what may drive some to try to stand out from the
