The Giver: Position Paper

Lowis Lowry’s novel, “the Giver”, has a very ambiguous ending. However, I believe that Jonas and Gabe reach Elsewhere, and finally create the life that Jonas was looking for. G-P.48, it says “The community was so meticulously ordered, the choices were so carefully made.” This shows how controlling the community was, also how everyone in the community had a difference sense of right or wrong than Jonas did. After he was selected, and went for his first day of training (G-PG.81), he was given the memory of snow. All throughout the book from this point, Jonas started putting pieces together and realized that it was time for him to travel to Elsewhere. Even though he is struggling to continue, he does, knowing what they escaped and unsure of what’s ahead. No matter how weak he was, he continued on for Gabriel, and no longer cared for himself. (G-PG.174) On this page, the author has shown that Jonas feels that the Unknown is very near. Jonas is so tired and frail that he is barely able to pass the memory of warmth to Gabe, the only person left for him to love. As they walked up the hill, Jonas become more aware of his surroundings as they approached the summit. The red sled at the peak, is there to transport Gabe and Jonas to take them home at last. (G-PG.178) The sled takes them to Elsewhere, like a stork would deliver a baby, carefully and gently as they soar through the snow. I believe that based on all of the text evidence, they finally reach a place where they can see color, have feelings, and be able to have everything that was changed in their old community. Also, G-PG.165 shows the moment that Jonas realizes that unless Gabriel leaves with him, he will never be able to experience these things. As they go into the community, Jonas hears the faint sound of music and people singing, which also supports the idea that they have finally reached the place they dreamed
