The Giver was written by Lois Lowry and published by Houghton Mifflin Company Boston. The genre of this story is fantasy. Jonas is an eleven year old boy who lives somewhere in the future. The society that he lives in is very structured, they do not have any emotions and everything is decided by people called “The Elders”, from their children to their careers to even their names. Everyone in this society is basically all the same. Age is very important in this society, every December all the children are advance to the next age. Jonas is turning twelve, and during the twelfth year all the children become legal adults who are also chosen a job by “The Elders”. Jonas is eleven years old and basically looks the same as everyone else ( There is not much information on how to others look like.), accept for his eyes they are an usual light grey colour ( Everyone else has dark grey eyes ). Jonas really loves the thought of freedom of choice. He desires love as well as other emotions. Jonas is very curious, he enjoys discovering the new memories during his training. Jonas’s role in the story is to protect the memories, he is “The receiver”. However Jonas has lots for trouble doing that.
The story takes place in a “Utopian” community, somewhere deep into the future. The book seems to take place on earth but it is not specified. All throughout the year it is summer.
Based on the book the most important part was when Jonas had his first day of training and he got to experience his first emotions, surprised and excitement. “He was free to enjoy the breathless glee that overwhelmed him: the speed, the clear cold air, the total silence, the feeling of balance and excitement and peace.”(Chapter 11, P. 82) I think that this part was very important because finally understanding his first emotions plays a big role in the story, he could know realize how important his job was and that will help hime to try and show the rest of the

Jonas decides to leave and change the lives of his people so that they can experience the truth. “The Giver rubbed Jonas’s hunched shoulders… We’ll make a plan” (155). Their plan involves leaving sameness and heading to Elsewhere, where Jonas knows the memories can be released to the people. He has a connection with Gabe, a special child who has experienced the memories, unlike the rest of the community. Throughout his training, the Giver gifts Jonas with many good memories to offset some of the horrific memories. The memory of war in particular is too traumatizing for Jonas to handle, no matter how many good memories the Giver can entrust to him. For example, the passage describes, “From the distance. Jonas could hear the thud if cannons. Overwhelmed by pain, he lay there in the fearsome stench for hours, listened to men and animals die, and learned what warfare meant.
He starts to believe that a world of sameness where no one can decide or make choices for themselves is boring. Lois Lowry is warning readers that living in a world of sameness is not something to create as it is boring and dull, but if the world follows conformity and does not value diversity and difference enough, society could become that of Jonas’s. When he turns twelve, his job for the rest of his life is decided as the Receiver. His job is to receive all the memories the previous Receiver has held on to. While this is beneficial for Jonas as he is able to leave the society and his job of the Receiver behind and get freedom, the community is left without someone to take the memories from The Giver.
On the surface, Jonas is like any other eleven-year-old boy living in his community. He seems more intelligent and perceptive than many of his peers, and he thinks more seriously than they do about life, worrying about his own future as well as his friend Asher’s. He enjoys learning and experiencing new things: he chooses to volunteer at a variety of different centers rather than focusing on one, because he enjoys the freedom of choice that volunteer hours provide. He also enjoys learning about and connecting with other people, and he craves more warmth and human contact than his society permits or encourages. The things that really set him apart from his peers—his unusual eyes, his ability to see things change in a way that he cannot explain—trouble him, but he does not let them bother him too much, since the community’s emphasis on politeness makes it easy for Jonas to conceal or ignore these little differences. Like any child in the community, Jonas is uncomfortable with the attention he receives when he is singled out as the new Receiver, preferring to blend in with his friends.
The day arrived for the Ceremony of Twelve, which Jonas had been waiting for. As Jonas watched his friends receive their assignments, he realized that he was skipped over. Although he knew that he got skipped over, he waited until the end of ceremony in order to show respect. Therefore, he is a good role model to his community. Later, at the end of the ceremony, the Elders explained that Jonas has been selected as the Receiver. “In a firm, commanding voice she announced, Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory (pg 60).” “He has shown all of the qualities that a Receiver must have (pg 62).” The Elders believed that Jonas had the qualities for the task, which includes intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the capacity to see beyond. However, as Jason’s training teaches him, this is not the case. His teacher, the Receiver of Memory, who tells Jonas to call him the Giver, transmits memories of the distant past to him. It is through these memories that Jonas discovers the meaning of snow, war, pain and love. The Giver tells him that these things existed before the people chose to go to “Sameness”. Movie The Giver, directed by Phillip Noyce, is based on Lois Lowry’s book and tells the story how the perfect world would look like. Where everyone is happy, safe, and there is no pain. Jonas is the main character and I will be analyzing how his values and beliefs changes though the movie. This movie is interesting because everyone lives within boundaries where past memory does exist just for the chosen ones. Jonas is one of those people who learns past wisdom and suffers while trying to understand what is the right thing to do.
