The genesis creation story is the creation myth that has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. In the first creation story of Genesis (Genesis 1:1-2:3), the Hebrew equivalent for the word God proceeds to create the world, heaven, and earth in six days then rest on the seventh while sanctifying it. In the second creation of Genesis (Genesis 2:4-2:24) God is referred to as Yahweh, he creates Adam from the earths dust and places him in the Grade of Eden giving him reign over all the animals. The first woman, Eve, is created from the rib of Adam and God places her alongside Adam to accompany him. In common usage, myth means a story that is the figment of someone (or some group's) imagination and that communicates a message that is only vaguely reliable at best. There is no shortage of commentators who look at the early parts of the Book of Genesis (and indeed many other parts of the Bible) in this way. Such people are often intent on taking the Bible apart and showing how it is not to be trusted. It is most unlikely that this was what your pastor had in mind and it is probable that he did not express himself adequately. However, I can tell you that the biblical texts in question are not "just a myth" or "all just someone's imagination." At the other end of the spectrum from the Bible-as-myth school of thought is the Bible-as-literal way of thinking. This is found among fundamentalists. In the case of the early chapters of Genesis, the approach here is called "creationism." Fundamentalist and literalist school of thought hold that everything in the Bible is strict history and is to be taken exactly as it appears -- like a newspaper account. Creationists hold that God created the world in six days as we know them and that all creation unfolded just as it appears in the biblical texts. Genesis 3 highlights and records the fall in a simplistic form so it can be easily understood. On the sixth day of creation, God formed man in his own image. Man who is in the image of God has “dominion over…all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26). The question would not be about the appearance but the power of dominion of man who is made in the image of God.

Where Genesis I describes a more ordered creation - the manifestation of a more primitive cultural influence than was responsible for the multi-layered creation in Genesis II - the second creation story focuses less on an etiological justification for the physical world and examines the ramifications of humankind's existence and relationship with God. Instead of Genesis I's simple and repetitive refrains of "and God saw that it was good" (Gen 1:12, 18, 21, 25), Genesis II features a more stylistically advanced look at "the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens" (Gen 2:4). While both stories represent different versions of the same Biblical event, Genesis II is significantly more complex than its predecessor and serves both to quantify the relationship between God and his creations and lay the foundation for the evolving story of humankind as well.
The first creation myth I will begin with is Hebrew in origin and comes from the Old Testament book of Genesis, specifically chapters one through three. Chapters one and two focus on Jehovah’s (God) creation of the heavens, earth and all living things. After man (Adam) is created Jehovah, gives him a single command: “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of he tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die (The Revival Study Bible, Genesis 2:16-17).” Jehovah then creates a mate for the man, woman (Eve). Throughout this creation story the reader is given the impression that the creation itself is perfect i.e.: following creation God declares everything good, man has a close friendship with his creator, man and woman were naked and experienced no shame. Unfortunately that perfection ends when Adam and Eve ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They then felt shame, cast blame to others rather than to themselves and hid from God. As a result of their disobedience God punished them according to his law. Both Adam and Eve and their offspring after them were sentenced to a life of pain, suffering and death.

There are specifically nine classifications of creation myths and many employ more than one motif. Genesis cosmogonies apply both the deus faber and ex nihilo motifs. The story often considered the ex nihilo myth, meaning "out of nothing" is the account in the first book of the Old Testament, Genesis, of God's creation in six days by speaking into existence light and darkness, sun and moon, stars and earth, plants and animals, and birds and fish. God then generates Adam in His image from the dust and breathes life into him and Eve was formed from one of Adam's ribs, therefore combining deus faber (the "maker-God") with ex nihilo motifs.

The ancient Greco-Roman mythology has two accounts of man’s creation, both of which were created around the same time, yet the conflict with each other. Genesis is the first creation story. God creates, establishes, and puts everything into motion. After putting all of this in motion he then rests. He creates everything on earth in just seven days. Before creation Gods breath was hovering over a formless void. God made earth and all of the living creatures on earth out of nothing. There was not any pre-existent matter out of which the world was produced. Reading Genesis 1 discusses where living creatures came from and how the earth was formed. It’s fascinating to know how the world began and who created it all. In Genesis 1 God is the mighty Lord and has such strong power that he can create and banish whatever he would like. Within the texts of Genesis which belong to the biblical scriptures of the Hebrews, and the myths of Egyptian origin, there are a multitude of similarities and differences. When compared side by side, the most obvious factor of both texts is that a single God was the creator of all that we know today. In Genesis that creator is simply referred to as God, while in Egyptian mythology, the creator is known as Neb-er-tcher. Both creators have striking resemblances, such as the ways they went about the production of the world.
