What is the GPI? The GPI is essentially an assessment of individual experiences and development of global perspective (Braskamp, & Engberg, 2011). It was originally pilot tested in 2007, and has gone through at least 9 versions to date, tested on students entering college, study abroad students, graduating seniors, faculty, and graduate students. There are now three forms of the test: the General Student Form for current and study abroad students, the New Student Form, and the Study Abroad Post Test Form. While it is predominately used at universities to assess student experiences, it is meant to be useable in any context, and designed so anyone can complete the survey. Potential uses range from, but are not limited to, study abroad, international student orientation, service learning, and freshmen-to-senior gains (Braskamp, Braskamp, & Engberg, 2014). The GPI has been compared to the BEVI and IDI at Michigan State University (MSU) in terms of what each assesses, how they were used, strengths and limitations. According to MSU, the GPI assesses student outcomes and experiences in the curriculum, co-curriculum, and community, and helps educators improve learning experiences. It was piloted at MSU with students in a multi-racial living and learning community. Strengths were that it is “based in student development theory and uniquely suited for assessment at the undergraduate level,” it is short, “cross-institutional comparisons and norms are available,” it is relatively inexpensive, and allows for the addition of institute specific items. ...h identification and then through the implementation of a program such as the Intergroup Relations Program expanded on a larger scale such as the Michigan Student Study, can we decrease bias and promote cultural acceptance by implementing programs that cultivate cultural diversity and discussion in the classroom. The study proposes that the although implicit biases may exist in the DoDEA facilities, the classroom environment fosters a cultural experiential dynamic that allows minorities to flourish academically without bias for racial or ethnic differences in learning outcomes. Furthermore, implementation of diversifying programs like the IRP in a public high school can determine if greater SAT scores can be achieved by minorities who have participated in the program. Elevating the academic performance of SAT’s in minorities can provide lasting educational benefits.

Many people, however, think that this definition is extremely narrow and does not encompass the various types of intelligence that a person can have. Students should have a degree of literacy regarding the global problems, issues, concerns, and trends that increasingly impact their lives. Through awareness students will know and understand that global issues and challenges exist and affect their lives. Awareness is a necessary prerequisite to understanding. Students will be aware that their information and knowledge on most global issues are incomplete and that they need to continue seeking information about how global and international issues are formed and influenced. Global education is a lifelong process. New global issues will emerge in the future, and new insights into current global challenges will be generated.

As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
