Islam is based on Tawhid which means, “realizing and maintaining Allah’s unity in all of man’s actions which relate directly or indirectly to Him” Philips, A.A.B. (2005). The Fundamentals of Tawheed. Riyadh: International Islamic Publishing House. That means we have to worship and maintain oneness of Allah in everything we do in our daily lives as a muslim. Tawhid is of three categories, which are Tawhid ar-Rububiyah, Tawhid al-Asma was-Sifat and Tawhid al- Ibadah.
Tawhid ar-Rububiyah means maintaining the unity of Lordship. It is based on the belief that Allah alone has created the universe and all things from nothing; He alone is the maintainer and sustainer; and He has complete power and ownership over His creation. This means maintaining the unity of Allah’s names and attributes. This aspect of Tawhid is further categorized into five main parts. The first part being, Allah’s names and attributes should not be given meanings other than the obvious meaning. For instance, anger is an attribute of Allah. Therefore, one cannot say Allah’s anger means His punishment. The second part is that, He should not be given any new names or attributes. An example of this is, in-spite the fact that Allah says He gets angry, He is not given the name al-Ghadib (the angry one), because neither Allah nor his messenger has used that name. The third part is, Allah should not be given the attributes of His creation. Giving Allah the attributes of creation is Shirk by humanization. In the Bible and Torah, it is stated that Allah created the universe in six days and he rested on the seventh day, so because of this, the Christians and Jews do not work on Saturday or Sunday. This is a great sin, because Allah is perfect and unique. It is human beings that need rest and not Allah. Regarding the attributes of seeing and hearing of Allah, they cannot be compared to His creation in any way. The fourth part of Tawhid al-Asma was- Sifat is that, Allah’s creation should not be given his attributes. For example, the Christians belief that Jesus has no beginning or end.
