The Function of Blogs
There are so many things one could do with the relatively new medium of blogs. They can be almost anything a person wants: a journal, a compilement of links, a scrapbook of information, or even a discussion board. The only definition I've seen that can encompass it is that they are postings in reverse chronological order. Blogs are the newest Internet craze, but do they serve a purpose? Early on, experienced web users, who knew web-programming language, kept blogs to keep track of their mind’s wanderings. They were like a "Captains log on the quest of discovery" (Brown). For the average Internet surfer, they weeded out sites worth viewing from the rest.
Now, sites like blogger.com have taken the work with web languages out of blogging, opening it up to the general public. New age blogs are seen as "vain self publishing" by experienced bloggers (Fitcher). I can see their point, as many inexperienced bloggers seem to ramble on about themselves as if they are to be praised. They only seem to want attention. This has made me wonder, what is the point of personal blogs? All blogs must have some entertainment value; otherwise no one would keep or read them.
Entertainment isn’t a very commendable purpose, but it has more value than watching television. It is better to be learning about news events and stating your opinion on it than just hearing it. At least then you’re developing your ideas, and the reading and writing will help develop communication skills. Bloggers learn to put more thought into what they say, or just the act of writing daily can help thoughts flow into words.
A blogger’s thoughts may stem from a news article they recently read. In this case they usually link you to the article and state their opinions, or point out different aspects of it. Their comments are kind of a one-way discussion leading you down their train of thoughts. You can usually reply to what the author says, but the time delay in responses may result in the author’s lack of interest to questions posed. Walt Crawford threw an interesting concept my way in his article, Announcing Cubed: Media about Media about Media. Blogs are just another form of media coverage. Our media affects how we think to a great extent. It is always rating other forms of media, and many blogs are no exception (Crawford).
In Ruth’s narrative she tells of how her family emigrated from Poland when she was a young girl, her abusive father disguised as righteous a Rabbi, her interracial relationships, teen pregnancy, and her eventual marriage to Andrew Dennis McBride, a black man from North Carolina, until he passed away and she remarried Hunter Jordan. What made Ruth so extraordinary was her resilience, strength of character and her freethinking mind. Despite having been raised in an ultraorthodox Jewish family, with a father who molested her, committed adultery, abused her mother, and later disowned her, Ruth was able to develop her own value system. Her ethics not only condemned this behavior, but also went against the societal norm of the 1960’s: racism. After becoming pregnant with her black boyfriend, as a teenager, Ruth confided in her aunt who helped her get an abortion. Following this incident, Ruth realized that she no longer desired to live at home with her family. Spending time away from home enabled Ruth to see how radically different her values and priorities were from those of her
From my perspective, a wise thing to do would be to first do a thorough analysis of the website. Go through and see what the weak points are and try to analyze a solution. Aim Higher College has deployed an open source blog package. This package uses a database backend and allows users to create user IDs, sites, and their own content to post it. Recently, the service has had off-campus users who have posted links that appear to be directed towards university resources, but they are getting redirected toward off-campus malware sites. It seems that the website the college has deployed has become target of a DoS attack or other malware attacks.
Ruth Younger is about thirty years old. She is married to Walter Lee Young and they have a son named Travis. “ Ruth is a pretty girl, even exceptionally so, but now it is apparent that life has been little that she expected, and disappointment has already begun to hang in her face. In a few years, before thirty-five even, she will be known among her people as a ‘settled woman.’” Ruth tries to do everything she can to make her family happy. She just wants the best for them.
In the marriage that Ruth had to her deceased husband she walked away from the life of being a Moabite, and adopted his family’s faith. She remained loyal to his mother and loved her as if she was her own. The friendship between Ruth and Naomi can be described as being strong, for Ruth listened to everything that Naomi told her to do. As a result, both were blessed by their actions that led to the plan that God had set out for them.

Generally, Canadian electoral system has been subjected to periodic reforms and frequent minor amendments in an attempt to improve some aspects of Canadian voting processes and conduction of elections. An important challenge in this regard is that new challenges always accompany the electoral changes and therefore the system should be continually reformed to meet new challenges and circumstances (Boyer, 13). There are however a number of alter...
Ruth Younger was underappreciated for her work. Ruth, Walter’s wife, worked at home and took care of everyone in the house even when they were disrespectful towards
An argument can be made that Journalism is one of the very few professions in the world of media that is handled with some sort of dignity and pride. After reading “The Elements of Journalism” by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel, I realized how important journalism is to each and every one of us. Whether you’re a writer or a reader, the back and forth exchange between provider and consumer is extremely important in pushing society forward. Journalism after all is designed to challenge society, promote new ideas and spark conversation between one another. Despite the positives of journalism, there are issues that exist within the profession that cannot be excused and cannot be ignored.
Mexican drug cartels could potentially be demolished. Marijuana accounts for as much as half of the Mexican drug cartel (Liebert, 31). Legalizing marijuana would ruin their entire business and they would cripple away. Doing so would free up boarder control and help law enforcement focus on more of the harder drugs like meth and cocaine (Liebert, 31). Marijuana has its benefits for the society along with its non-benefits. Moreover, even with law enforcement focusing on the harder drugs, the users inducing marijuana are more likely to join the search of law enforcement. If we keep it illegal, this will allow less users to get their hands on it, and decrease the odds of harder drugs being a problem.
Mainstream media such as television, radio, newspapers were the primary source of reliable information before the epoch of the internet. However, the situation has changed. The evolution of modern technology in the world today has led to the continuous increase in the methods of practicing journalism. Social and technological advancements have not only improved the pace and content of this field’s practice, but has extended its genre to online or cybernetic journalism. (Project for Excellence in Journalism, 2007). News websites most of which are owned by major media companies and alternative websites with user generated content such as social networking sites and blogs are gaining grounds in the journalism field of practice. (Nel, n.d). One of the chief forces affecting the practice of journalism nowadays is online citizen journalists. Nel (n.d) defines citizen journalism as “individuals playing an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analysing and disseminating news and information”. He further adds that “citizen journalism is slowly being looked upon as a form of rightful democratic ways of giving hones news, articles, etc, directly by citizens of the world from anywhere.” One of the major researches conducted in the field of citizen journalism, describes the phenomenon as “individuals who intend to publish information online, meant to benefit a community”, and this information is expected to benefit the audience or the wider population in making decisions for the improvement of their community. (Carpenter, 2010.)
The legalization of marijuana has been a topic often debated in the United States especially in more recent times. There are pros and cons with the use of marijuana, however the disadvantages are much less significant than the benefits of legalizing the so called drug. Marijuana is useful medicinally and has other positive attributes and therefore should be legalized.
Because I am a journalism student, I have talked, researched and discussed with many of my fellow students and faculty members about the topics above. I am choosing to talk about this because I think it is important and they are pertinent issues in the journalism field. I am also very interested in this topic, so I thought it would be fun to take the opportunity you gave us to design our own multi-part question and write about something in journalism that is appealing to me.
Why would anyone want to legalize drugs? Drugs are bad . How can drugs be so deadly and addictive in a helpful way. All twenty-three states that have legalized drugs in the United States have not brought any good among our country. The legalization of these harmful drugs have only caused more corruption making addiction rates even higher . The states have legalized the drugs thinking they can cure diseases and take away pain. Legalizing drugs allows patients to sell their drugs on the black market. For example heroin is suppose to ease cancer pain, but this is a drug that can lead to infection of the blood vessels and heart valves and cause veins to collapse. Another example is Glaucoma, which is a fluid pressure disease to the eye. The tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that is found in marijuana decreases the fluid pressure inside the
We should legalize marijuana because it reduces crime. Marijuana has been known as a bad or dangerous drug. However, if we really think about it the amount of crime will reduce a lot. Many people get arrested for selling and using marijuana and they are probably just looking for a break or just a fun time. “According to the crime status in Colorado before and after marijuana was legalized the crime rate dropped”Rich, Alex K. Stingl, Alexander. This proves that if marijuana is legalize then the amount of crime will reduce in the state it is legalized in.By the paragraph above this concludes why i think should be
